Chapter 6 - Mysterious Guests

1621 Words
Megan I woke up the following morning with a terrible headache. I remember running into a tree. No! I remember Samantha running into a tree, and then everything went black. How did I get home? Maybe I had a concussion and couldn’t remember. There couldn’t be anyone else on my property, so I had to somehow drag myself home. It couldn’t have been one of Henry’s men, or I would be dead right now. I would have smelled or felt another presence if it were there. I shrugged off the idea. “Sam, are you okay? How did we get home? Samantha?” My wolf was quiet. Perhaps she is still fragile from the incident. I decide to leave her be for now. “Storm? Do you have any ideas?” No reply … I took a shower to clear my head and went downstairs for some breakfast. After breakfast, I went to my mother’s old office. The desk was set up in front of big wooden doors that slid open. I remember as a small girl, sitting in front of my mother’s desk with the doors open wide, playing, while my mother attended to her Luna duties. My mother always said that she felt at home in the outdoors, that is why she had her desk in the outdoors. I put away the old papers that had turned yellow with age, and books that were covered in dust, and set up my writing table on my mother’s old desk. I have been there for two days already and not sat down to write yet. “Maybe the bump into the tree knocked some sense into me and the words will flow now,” I said out loud, rolling my eyes at myself. “You are such an idiot.” I heard Samantha reply. “More like a dumdum if you ask me,” Storm said. “Well, glad both of you are up and talking again!” I replied. “Dumdum? Really? That’s the best you can come up with? Well, I wasn’t the one who ran into a tree! But I am the one who earns the money around here. So SHUT UP, both of YAS!” I was a bit harsh with them, but I was frustrated. “If someone from the human world saw me now, they would have had me committed!” I thought to myself, and Sam wholeheartedly agreed. I sat down at what was now my desk to write, looking at that line, blinking at me, still taunting me! I jumped up, grabbed my tablet, and sat down on one of the comfy chairs in the reading corner. Once again, I was looking at that line blinking at me, taunting me, only it was on my tablet this time! So running into the wall only gave me a headache. No ideas. No words. Not even an inkling of the setting! “Aaaarrrgggghhhh … ” I jumped up from the chair, walking around the room. “Hhhmmm, it’s easy to write a romance novel when he is a billionaire, and she is a damsel in distress! There are so many of them out there that the story line writes itself. The only change is the town and the names of the characters. Most of the time, even the mansion and the cars stay the same!” I looked at my tablet. “You are so lucky. If you were a paperback, you would have received a free-flying lesson just about now.” “As I said, Coo-coo”, Storm chipped in. I was tired of the same old thing, besides the words still stayed away. “That knock on our head clearly wasn’t hard enough.” Sam chirped, and I rolled my eyes at her. Storm started jumping up and down with excitement. “What is wrong with you today?” “I don’t know. Nothing is wrong. Everything is right. I’m happy, just excitedly happy.” Storm was clearly losing HER mind. The bump on the head gave us a concussion. All three of us were acting very strangely. I walked into the kitchen. As I stood by the cabinet looking outside, waiting for the kettle to boil, I saw a shadow move behind the trees in the forest. I froze for a second, not sure if I imagined it or if it was real. I slowly and very quietly moved outside to see what it was, or if it was anything. I did not want to shift yet. I could not give my secret away to anyone. I saw it move again. This time I knew there was something or someone. I shifted and slowly approached the line of trees. I could not afford anyone from the pack knowing I was here. Growling ever so slightly, I scanned the area slowly. As I walked into the forest, I was jumped from the side by a black wolf. He jumped up, keeping me behind him while growling at the brown wolf in front of him. I smelled cocoa and musk and it was gone. I was completely at a loss for the scene playing out in front of me. Who could this black wolf be? What was happening? Why would the brown wolf be attacking me??? I couldn’t smell the wild scent of a rogue. Were they pack members? The black wolf kept his eyes pinned on the wolf in front of him. I looked at the scene in front of me as if it was playing in slow motion. How did either of them know I was here? Did they even know who I was? I watched as the black wolf lunged at the brown wolf, all the while keeping me safely behind him. The brown wolf was no match, and he gave up quickly and ran off. The black wolf growled again, sniffing the air, turned around, bowed his head at me, and ran off. “Samantha! What the hell?” “Don’t ask me! You are the human!” She retorted, sounding slightly hysterical. “As if being a human would solve a wolf mystery!” Shaking the dirt off after I got up, and walked home, but still kept an eye on the forest. “Storm … any ideas?” “That small brown one smells of Henry!” she growled. I shift back to human form before walking into the house. I was nervous and confused. Someone knew I was here, and that someone could possibly know who I was. How could they? I have always been so careful. I worked under an alias in the city, to the point where I changed my legal name to the alias. I locked up the house for the first time since I arrived, knowing full well that no lock would keep a werewolf at bay if they wanted in. “Every possible precaution,” I said, trying to convince myself. “As if … ” Samantha jumped in, which gave me a fright. My nerves were on edge. How did I get myself into this mess? What was this mess? I slowly went through every room in the house, checking each window and door to make sure they were locked. I felt anxious. Maybe they didn’t know who I was. This was wolf territory. Since my father passed, and I did not claim my place as Alpha, anything could have happened. It was possible that the wolves did not know who I was and that I overreacted? I took a deep breath to slow down my heart rate and went to the kitchen to make the cup of coffee I was looking forward to before I was so rudely interrupted. In my office, with the doors closed, you could not feel the light breeze or hear nature all around you. I did not want to take the chance to open the doors if there were werewolves roaming around my territory. I did not have a Beta or a pack to protect me. I did not want that life. What it did to my parents and my family! How it tore the family apart after my parent’s death! I decided to stay a lone wolf. Closing the curtains in my office for the first time ever, I turned around and went back to the reading corner. I grabbed my tablet and started moving that horrible blinking line. The words slowly started to fill the pages. It was just before sunset when I stopped and realized that I had spent all afternoon on this new idea that had been formed. Coming here and having the sh.it scared out of me might just have been the jolt I needed. ”Yes, like I said before,” Samantha said with a grin on her face. “Tsk. You did not want to leave the life of luxury, if I remember correctly!” Storm replied, frustrated at Samantha and her attitude. “Either way,” I answered. “We are here, and I’m over my writer’s block. Now we must just find out which wolves were running around on our property.” I sighed. I was not in the mood to go traipsing after trespassers but, if I wanted to have peace and quiet and be able to enjoy the freedom of opening my windows and doors, I would have to. I sat there on the comfy chair looking at the first draft of my book idea. Where would I start looking? How do you start looking? How was I going to hide who I really am? All these questions ran through my mind, as sleep took over, and I snuggled into the chair …
