I only knew how long it had been because I started marking off the days on the wooden headboard of the small cot I slept on. I couldn't be sure it was accurate, though, since there were no windows inside the place. All I had to base the days on was our sleeping schedule. The place wasn't at all a house as they had called it, but rather an underground barrack. I hated everything about living in this dark, dank place. The floors, walls, and ceiling were compact dirt, there were no sources of natural light, and no bathroom facilities. Instead, we had buckets and a makeshift shower with a giant bag of cold water suspended in the air. It was impossible to get clean. I wouldn't say I was a high maintenance per se,
