*Leroy POV*
It is almost midnight when I wake up with Cali sleeping peacefully in my arms.
Everything is a rollercoaster. I am an emotional wreck.
Cali wanting to leave has evoked something I can’t quite explain, something that should not be happening. I am insecure and struggling to control my wolf. It hurts that Cali no longer wants to be around me. That I have to command her to stay and to even share a bed with me. One thing I got from the prophet is that my eternity will be f****d up if I let her out of my sight. Then there was the ultimate sacrifice part I still can’t wrap my head around. I would like to believe that is why I refuse to let her go. Except for Sky’s reaction. I can’t explain it. He completely lost it when she wanted to leave. I am certain that Phoebe is our mate. I felt it in my core, in my nerves and bones. I picked up her scent before that bus even stopped. Peaches and cream, a scent so sweet I wanted to bathe in it and make a thousand pups.
“She obeyed the Alpha voice. She is a wolf.”
My trail of thought is disturbed by Sky’s loud thoughts.
Maybe he is right. The prophet did find my doubts ridiculous, but still, we don’t heal so fast.
“What is going on Sky?” I ask my wolf who should be in control of all this.
“I don’t know.”
“What do you know?”
“Cali can’t go. She can never leave us. I will go crazy.”
“We have a mate Sky.”
“I know.”
“Do you want to reject her then?”
“Nooo!”
This wolf actually growls at me.
“Phoebe mate. Mate is forever. I love her.”
“And Cali?” I am now screaming inside. This is confusing and frustrating me. We should have left when Cali said she no longer wanted a sleeping mate but we forced to stay. This thing between us will definitely cause friction between us and our mate.
“Cali can’t go. She can never leave us. I will go crazy,” he repeats his earlier proclamation.
I sigh and stop communicating with him. I am about to drift off to sleep again when Cali’s heads jerks left and right before she screams out. She must be having a nightmare about the attack. I instinctively hold her tightly.
“It’s okay. I am here,” I murmur and feel her relax before she opens her eyes and locks them with mine. I don’t know if I am imagining things but her eyes seem to be more golden than before.
“Leroy?” she questions when my lips cover hers. I pull her closer and ravage her lips until we are both breathless. She pushes me away when I try to remove her pyjama top.
“No,” she says firmly.
“Babe, please. Let me make love to you,” I plead, unable to help myself. She said she had no intentions of remaining a virgin after turning eighteen. Stupid Sky keeps reminding me of that and I can’t fight the overwhelming urge for me to make her mine right here and now. It is another thing that should not be happening after meeting our mate. Sky should contest all this, yet he is on cloud nine and cheering me on.
“No. You have a mate. Leave me alone!” Cali objects before using all her energy to push me away. I sigh and watch her get out of the bed and hurry out of the room.
“f**k!” I curse out loud before getting dressed and leaving through the window. I don’t know what possessed me and I can’t guarantee that it won’t happen again. The far away I am from her, the better.
“We can’t leave…” Sky objects.
“Shut up Sky and get your fucken’ wolf act together!” I snap but it’s like I am speaking to a wall. I need to see the prophet.
“The full moon is in three months. We can be with Cali and give her our pup before we claim Phoebe,” my insane wolf suggests the most bizarre things I have ever heard from a wolf that has just met it’s mate.
“Are you hearing yourself?” I ask him in disbelief.
“Yes. That way they both stay with us forever.”
“It does not work like that Sky and you know it.”
“It can if she has our pup,” he insists. Something is really wrong with my wolf.
“And what happens if Phoebe wants them gone or dead?” I ask and he remains quiet.
“You will have no choice but do what our mate says. That is how the bond works. Phoebe’s needs and happiness will be our priority once we mark her,” I lay it down for him. He knows all this yet it’s like he is in some trance I just can’t shake him out off.
“Cali can’t go. She can never leave us. I will go crazy,” he chants the same absurd proclamation.
“Let’s just stop talking!” I snap at him again before I find myself face-to-face with the prophet. Somehow, he always shows up before I summon him whenever I want to speak to him. It is midnight, I am just outside my mansion gates yet he is here.
“Everything you seek is in her identity. Time for it is not now. Remember, do not let her off your sight…”
“So will be my eternity, I heard you. How do I resist her?”
“Do you want to?”
“I have to,” I say in earnest. It’s no use denying the attraction I feel towards Cali and this old man knows it anyway.
“Her cycle summons your wolf.”
“Her cycle?”
“She is ovulating. A fertile ground guaranteed to yield what your wolf yearns for.”
“I definitely have to stay away from Cali,” I think to myself and immediately feel Sky fighting me, wanting to take over.
“How do I resist her?” I ask in desperation.
“Gates to the heart you must avoid. Golden gates will forever be your weakness. Forever stronger than other’s strength.”
“Avoid her golden eyes. Got it.” That makes sense. I always lose myself in those golden eyes.
“Every decision has consequences. So long Your Majesty.”
The Epsilon’s departure is as mysterious as his arrival. I don’t even pick up his scent. It’s like he vanished on thin air.
Sky is still fighting me. He wants a pup and knowing that Cali is ovulating is driving him crazy.
“Cali has been through a lot. Do you want to hurt her?”
Silence
“That’s what will happen if you continue with this,” I say and immediately wonder if that’s the ultimate sacrifice the prophet spoke of. Will I be compelled to kill my pup or Cali in the future?
My thoughts send chills down my spine but also gets my wolf whining. At least he is not fighting me anymore.
