*Leroy POV*
Everyone gasps in horror when dad drops to the ground. His wolf goes into violent spasms, his mouth froths before he lays there, lifeless.
They are all shocked but I am not. I saw it on the wolf that bit Cali at the lake. I should feel a loss, grieve for my father, but I am too worried about Cali. There must be a reason she and her wolf are so mad. Dad and our old warriors know it. Whatever it is, is big enough for them to attack her without even checking with the Lycan kings.
Talking about Lycans, they are just standing there as if being entertained.
Diana charges forward and the rest of our old warriors follow behind her. They simultaneously close in on Cali from all directions. They are getting on my nerves now. I am the only Alpha of Ruber pack now yet they are following Diana’s instructions.
Sky growls before leaping with the aim of landing in front of the gold wolf. He is mid air when our epsilon jumps in front of him with his coat completely covering him.
I shift into my human form as we roll a distance away.
“What are you doing old man?”
I am ready to strangle him when I see it. Like rain, silver droplets spray out of the gold wolf’s mouth. One by one, they drop to the ground as droplets fall on them. Their bodies spasm like my dad’s and they are soon dead too.
My jaw drops, so as everyone’s. This power is…I don’t have words to describe it. It’s nothing I have never seen or heard of. My heart starts pounding as the gold wolf approaches the rest of my pack. We were all mixed up according the ranks earlier. Not anymore. Other packs must have read between the lines and separated from ours. I can tell by the look on their Alpha’s faces that none will come to our aid. So much for solidarity.
My warriors bravely keep the front line. They are strong, I trained them myself but I can feel their fear. I don’t blame them. Nothing in our training prepared us for this.
Sky takes over and leaps between my pack and the furious wolf. I don’t know what we did to make it so mad. The people who knew are now dead. Terrence probably got it when he looked into her eyes but he did not share. Whatever my people did, it is still my responsibility to protect them.
Golden eyes lock with mine. So beautiful, so mesmerising and so angry.
“Cali,” I murmur to the person I know cares for me.
I hear a low growl before the exquisite, most powerful wolf I have ever seen turns to leave. The Lycans bow when she sprints past them. I thought Lycans don’t bow to anyone. It’s unacceptable in their arrogant powerful egocentric world, but they just did.
I watch the gold wolf sprint down the mountain and disappear. Sky gives over to me before I am ready. He does not want to face this. A dull pain erupts from my chest, a shiver descends down my spine. I suddenly feel cold. A sense of loss engulfs me. Like I have let go of something vital to my living. I whisper her name. “Cali.”
That spectacular powerful wolf is Cali. I swore never to let her off my sight, but she’s gone.
Marcus, Linda and Phoebe all rush to my side and squeeze me into a hug. The warmth of their bodies, the unspoken reassurance that I am not alone heats up my freezing state.
“Let her go. She will come around when she cools down,” Phoebe advises. She does not seem the least shaken by any of this. Her words seem to soothe the pain. I don’t know why Cali’s wolf is so angry but I will hang on to that hope.
It feels like we were standing for a few minutes but it must have been a long time. When I look around, everyone is gone except the four of us and my epsilon who is standing a feet away from us.
“The Lycans dismissed everyone,” Marcus tells me.
I nod my head, plant a light kiss on Phoebe’s forehead before dismissing them.
I walk slowly alongside my Epsilon. He told me months ago that there would be the ultimate sacrifice. That blood would be spilled. I feel guilty for being relieved that it’s not Cali’s. She has killed my father and all our old warriors. As the Alpha of this pack I should be avenging them, but I have no intentions of doing that.
He starts talking before I could utter my question. He tells my pack’s gruesome murderous actions. How we wiped out our neighbours. It makes me sick to my stomach.
“How did she survive?”
“I cut her out of her mother’s womb. I fed her for a few months but I could not hide her forever.”
“You left her in the woods instead?”
That’s where Cali was discovered eighteen years ago. It was a mystery to everyone until now.
“Beta Taylor and his wife were the only emphatic members of this pack. They did not approve the attack on our neighbours. That was the reason the baby was discovered by their Omega.“
In his own way he is telling me that he planned for her to be safe.
“She was always meant to be Marcus’s sister,” I murmur, at awe how it ended up that way eventually. But it was too late. She had already suffered a great deal.
“Yes, that was our custom but Diana wanted her.”
I know the story from here. If an Omega found something, their master owned whatever they found. Marcus’s parents owned Cali but they had to take the baby to the Alpha and council. That was a formality for the pack to know about her. She was theirs but Diana wanted her.
I let out a sigh.
“And dad granted her that wish.”
I know that the Taylor’s were furious but dad was their Alpha. Cali would have never suffered under them. My chest gets heavy as I realise my father’s sins.
We walk in silence for a moment before he speaks again.
“Gold is the legendary wolf. She is a prophecy fulfilled.”
“Who is she?”
“A pup of Gold, the female Alpha of the Golden pack and a Northern hemisphere Lycan. The combination is so rare. She is higher in rank than the queen.”
I listen intently, my heart sinking. We are in the Southern hemisphere. Terrence’s father was the Southern hemisphere Lycan. That means she is not related to Neptune and Alloy. They are sure mesmerised by her. They both did not hide that they wanted a pup with her. She is so much like them and could be mated to one of them. I shake my head and Sky lets out a possessive growl. No, not happening.
She is the most powerful wolf out there. She can pretty much do whatever she likes but I refuse to accept that she could belong to someone else. She is mine, only mine.
“Her saliva is lethal, let alone her bite. She is deadly,” the Epsilon continues. I and everyone have witnessed that part.
“Is she my mate?” I can’t help but hold my breath as I wait for his response.
