Chapter Five

2380 Words
"Ok, I have a shirt and some of his favorite candy, now for the video game." I say.  "Is that why you wanted us to come?" Nathan asks.  "Yea, I need you to tell me what game he likes and I also needed a ride here." I say smiling innocently.  Owen and Nathan laugh.  "We've been used." Owen says.  We are at the nearest mall right now, buying Hunter's birthday gift.  After the boys debating over and over, I get a game and then we head to the food court to eat.  "So, what's with the whole baby-making thing?" Nathan asks and Owen laughs.  I look at them confused. "What are you talking about?"  They both laugh and shake their heads while I still look at them confused.   Owen gets up to go to the bathroom and then Nathan's phone rings. When he looks at it, he smiles mischievously when he sees who's calling.  "Hunter is video calling me." He says.  He gets closer to me and picks up.  "Hey, what's going on?" Nathan asks.  Hunter's eyes squint at us. "What the hell are you guys doing?"  "We are on a date, she finally said yes." Nathan says.  I look at Nathan about to punch him but Hunter growls and hangs up.  Nathans smile falls. "Oh s**t!"  "What the hell happened?" I ask.  "Be right back." He says getting up and probably calling Hunter back. I sigh. (That boy is always getting himself in trouble.)  After a few minutes, Owen comes back along with Nathan who doesn't look so good.  "You okay?" Owen asks him.  He nods slowly and then looks at me like he's thinking of something. Owen and I wait to see what he's going to say but he doesn't say a thing.  After we leave the mall, the boys drop me off at my house. I head to my room and I put Hunter's gifts in a gift bag. He's having a party on Friday but I'll give it to him on his actual birthday.  The next day Hunter picks me up to go to school. He looks at me strangely when I get into his car.  "What?" I ask looking down at my new clothes making sure everything is in place, a cute green summer dress with white flowers and sneakers.  He shakes his head. "Nothing."  He starts to drive and he is unusually quiet.  "So are you and Nathan okay? I mean after his stupid joke yesterday."  He nods. "Yea we're fine."  I stop talking and we ride in silence to school. Once we are there, we head to our lockers where thankfully, I see the guys.   I smile. "Hey, guys."   "Hey, did you guys see the new girl yet?" Nathan asks.  Hunter and I shake our heads.  "She's hot!" Owen says. "There she is."  Owen points at a beautiful light brown hair girl with icy blue eyes.   I nod. "Wow, she is pretty."   I look at Hunter thinking that I'm gonna find him gawking at her like all the other guys but I catch him staring at me.  "What? You don't think she's pretty?" I ask confused.  He looks at her and nods. "Yea, she's pretty." He says but looks uninterested.  I look at the guys who also look at me surprised.   (What is wrong with him?)  He should be talking to her right now, trying to get her number. That's what he does, he works fast, especially if she's that pretty. We head to class. hunter and I have our first two classes together and then one more in the afternoon.  The new girl, whose name is Jade, has the same classes as us too. And of course, the minute she saw Hunter, her eyes shined, and wouldn't stop staring at him the whole time while Hunter on the other hand kept staring at me for some dammed reason. I have asked him like seven times already "what is it?" but he just says "nothing.".   (What the hell is wrong with him?) This is the question I keep asking myself today. Once it's time for lunch, I see the boys sitting at our table with the new girl.  (These guys work fast.) I think to myself while walking over to them.  I sit next to Nathan while they all talk and she looks at me curiously, almost as if I didn't belong there.  She's sitting next to Hunter and Owen.   I smile at her. "Hi, I'm Lilith."  "Hello." She says but it sounds more like a question.  Now I feel awkward and then from her side, Hunter keeps staring at me.   Ethan gives an awkward laugh. "Yea this is our girl, she's part of our group."  She looks at me and gives me a clear fake smile.   (Well, I'm done with her.)  I ignore her and keep talking to the guys.   "Hunter, you ok man?" Ethan asks him, clearly seeing how weird he's being.  Hunter looks at him and takes a deep breath.   "Yea, I'm fine man." He says smiling looking like he snapped out of whatever was bringing him down.  He looks to his side where Jade sits and studies her.   "You want to go out?" He asks her.  I almost gasp. The guys look at him surprised.   She giggles. "Yea."   (He asked her on a date!!)  He nods. "Cool, how about tonight?"   "Yea, that's perfect." She says and they exchange numbers.  We are all shocked even though Hunter ignores her for the rest of our lunch.  By the time school ends, I get out of the classroom and receive a text from Hunter.  Hunter: "Hey, Nathan and Owen will take you home today. I'm heading home to get ready for my date."  Lil: "Ok, remember to bring protection. -wink emoji-"  I head outside feeling a little weird cause this has never happened but I'm ok with it. I knew that someday eventually he was going to get a girlfriend, not that she's his girlfriend. I see the boys waiting for me and head to them. I look around and Hunter's car is already gone.  The boys take me home and the whole time we talk about how weird it was today. Throughout the rest of the day, I wait patiently for Hunter to text me back as he would normally do, but he never does. I fall asleep and when I wake up, there's no text either.  (I have to stop, he needs his space especially now if he's gonna start dating. I have to stop being so clingy.)  I get ready for school and a honk comes from outside but when I go out, I see Ethan's car.   "Hey, Hunter told me to come to pick you up." He says.  "Oh, okay." I say confused.  I get in and he starts driving.   "Did the date go that well?" I say laughing.  Ethan looks at me. "I have no idea. We haven't talked, he just texted."  Once we get to school, we find the other guys who are of course talking to some of the cheerleaders.   "Hey... where's Hunter?" Nathan asks looking around confused.  "Ethan picked me up today so I don't know." I say.  They look at me confused and start talking lowly amongst themselves.  "Is it because of tomorrow?" Owen whispers.  "Could be." Ethan says.  Nathan crosses his arms. "He's acting so weird."   "You mean because tomorrow is his birthday?" I ask getting into their conversation.  They look at me as if they now remember I was there.  "Yea." Nathan says smiling.  "Why would that matter?... Oh s**t, we are going to be late guys." I say.  "Crap!" Owen yells.  We head to the classroom and a minute later, Hunter walks in, looking a little tired.  The guys start asking him questions which he answers vaguely. Jade walks in with a smile and sits next to Hunter. She gives me a side look like she's annoyed with me but I ignore her.  (I haven't done anything to her so I don't know why she acts like that.)  When lunch comes, Hunter says that he's going to have lunch with Jade somewhere else and walks off without waiting for any of us to respond.  (Now I start panicking, is this how its going to be now. I don't even get to spend any time with my best friend?)  The guys see my mood and they keep me company, trying to cheer me up.   Once school is done, I head home with Nathan and Owen but this time, Hunter didn't even bother to text me. Thank god that they waited just in case.  When I finally get home, I can't do it anymore, I call him but he doesn't pick up. I call him over and over and nothing. I decide to text him.  Lil: "Hunter, what's going on?"  No response but I can see he saw the message.  I keep texting him and by the time is around nine at night, I must have texted him more than twenty times.   I want to cry but I hold it in. I head downstairs for a drink where my dad is working on the table again.  "Hey dad, can you give me a ride to school tomorrow? Hunter is going to be busy." I say trying to act normal.  "Of course beba." He says smiling.  I grab a drink and head upstairs with Nala, ready for bed.  The next morning, I wake up and nothing, no text from him at all. I text the rest of the boys telling them that my dad is taking me to school so they don't have to pick me up and now I'm pissed.  I get ready and when I'm done, I decide to text Hunter one more time.  Lil: "Fine, you don't want to talk to me, then I won't talk to you. You don't want to see me, then I'll stay away from you. We can be complete strangers if that's what you want... Happy birthday."  I know I'm probably overacting but I'm too angry to care.  My dad drops me at school early cause he has to go to work. Once there, I wait for the guys and now my anger has gone down enough to wish I could turn back time to when I sent that message.  I sit on the floor leaning on the lockers with my head between my knees, wanting to cry.  "Hey, Lilith is it?"  I look up and see Jade walking towards me. The tone in her voice lets me know that this is not going to be a pleasant conversation.  (Here we go.)  "Please do me a favor, try to not spend so much time with Hunter. If we date, it's just not right for him to spend so much time with another girl."  I get up looking at her, she's smaller than me so she has to look up at me.  "That's not happening." I say standing as straight and tall as I can.   (Although right now I'm not so sure about that.)  "Hunter is my best friend and we have been this close since we were eight, and by the way, you are not the first girl who has done this. Trust me, Hunter doesn't like this kind of crap." I say crossing my arms and staring at her with a serious expression.  She looks at me angrily. "We'll see about that."  "Yea, we'll see." I say.  She walks off and I watch her knowing that she'll come back for more. Like Hunter has said before, girls are crazy.  My phone rings and it's Hunter. My heart leaps and I am scared to talk to him. I take a deep breath and pick it up.  "Hello?" I say.  "Lil, where are you? Why aren't you coming out?" He says panicking.  "... I'm at the school." I say.  "What? Why are you there?" He asks sounding confused.  "Because I didn't know if you were going to pick me up and since I didn't want to bother the guys, I asked my dad to bring me."  He sighs. "Lil, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry."  I don't say anything.  "I just... I've been confused about something lately... " He sighs.  "You have friends, you can talk to your friends, we are here for you and we've all been worried about you." I say feeling a little irritated.  "Yea, I'm sorry." He says softly.  "You know... you're a pain in the ass sometimes." I say.  He chuckles. "I know, I'm a complicated guy."  "Yea and you know what would make things less complicated for me?"  "What?"  "You not dating jealous girls." I say.  He sighs. "Jade?"  "Yep, she just told me to stay away from you."  "Don't worry about her, I'll deal with her." He says.  I smile. "Happy birthday by the way."  "Thanks, I'm heading to school, I'll be there soon."  "Ok, see you soon... and Hunter?"  "Yea?"  "Don't you ever ghost me again!" I yell.  "I'm sorry, I won't." He says.  "Okay, bye."  Once we hang up, I feel like a weight was lifted off of my chest. Like I can breathe again.  "Hey, Hunter's not here again." Owen and Nathan ask.  I turn around and smile. "He said he's on his way."  "Is he okay?" Nathan asks.  I nod. "Yea, I think so."   After a few minutes, Ethan arrives and Hunter walks behind him.  I look at Hunter and smile, he looks at me smiling but then his smile falls. His eyes widen and then he closes them fast.  (What the hell? Did his eyes just... )  He holds Ethan's arm and squeezes it.   "Are you okay?" I ask, walking towards him.  "Stay back Lil!" He says in a low-toned voice.   His hand on Ethan shakes as if he's holding something back. All three guys look at me with their eyes wide.  I look at all of them confused. "What?"  "Owen..." Ethan says. "...take Lil to the classroom, I'll deal with Hunter." Owen nods and takes my hand pulling me away.   "Wait but-" I start but Owen cuts me off.  "Nope, not this time Lil, do what you're told." Owen says.  I stay quiet and follow him.  Nathan looks at Owen. "Now everything makes sense." He says.  (Oh yea, sure, everything makes so much sense.)
