We arrived at the classroom a while ago and the class already started, but Ethan and Hunter aren't there.
"Hey, what happened to them?" I whisper to Owen.
He swats me away and I quickly turn to pay attention to the class because the teacher is looking at me.
They never came back to the morning classes. Now at lunch, I walk to our table and see only Owen and Nathan.
"What happened, where are they?" I ask sitting down.
They shrug their shoulders and shake their heads.
"You guys are pissing me off!" I say giving them a death glare. I take my phone out and text Hunter.
Lil: "Hey are you okay? Where are you?"
He immediately responds.
Hunter: "Hey, I'm fine. I won't be at school today but I'll pick you up after to take you home."
Lil: "Okay, as long as you're fine. By the way, in chem, the teacher gave paired assignments and she paired us together. It's easy but it's due in three days."
Hunter: "Okay."
Lil: "So, you want to work on it today or tomorrow?"
Hunter: "I'll let you know when I see you."
Lil: "Okay."
I look up at the boys who are whispering to each other and I squint my eyes at them. "You know, you guys are worst than gossiping girls."
They smile. "We are just trying to give you a real girlfriend experience since you are lacking that in your life." Nathan says.
I roll my eyes and continue eating.
"Hey, is Hunter around? He's not picking up his phone" Jade asks.
I ignore her and the guys look at each other.
"Ah... no." Owen says.
She turns around annoyed and walks off.
"Since Hunter obviously won't see her anymore, I think I'll offer my rebound services." Nathan says watching her leave.
I shake my head. "Sometimes I wonder how am I even friends with you guys."
"Oh come on, you know we are great." Owen says.
"Putos" I mumble.
Owen gasps. "We are not man-whores."
Nathan laughs. "Yes, we are."
"Yea, you're right." Owen says.
They both laugh agreeing.
The rest of the day goes uneventful and school finally ends. I'm surprised when Owen and Nathan are waiting for me outside of my classroom.
"Hunter's not picking me up?" I ask a little disappointed.
They smile. "Oh no, we are just walking you to him, that's all."
I look at them confused and start walking. "You know, you bunch have been acting weird lately. I don't like it one bit."
They smile awkwardly but we keep walking.
Once in the parking lot, I can see Hunter leaning on his car in the distance with Ethan next to him. I start walking towards him but Nathan holds me by the hand and stops me.
"Go slowly." He says.
I scrunch my face now getting annoyed. "What the hell are you talking about?"
They don't answer me but Owen starts walking.
"Come on, walk behind me." He says.
I stand there feeling stupid. I give an exhausted sigh and start walking at their pace. We get closer and Hunter straightens up, looking away and his body stiffens.
We stop in front of them and Hunter slowly looks at me.
"Lil." He says softly.
"Hey." I smile.
"You okay?" Owen asks him.
He takes a deep breath in, closing his eyes. He lets it out and then nods.
"Were you not feeling well?" I ask.
"Yea, a little." He says now looking at me... and he stares.
I look at Ethan because this is getting awkward.
Ethan clears his throat and pats Hunter on the shoulder, taking him from his daze.
He looks away and then looks back at me again. "Ready?" He asks.
"Yea." I nod.
Hunter unlocks the car and I get in but I don't see him moving to get in too. I make as if I'm closing the door but I don't, I leave it opened a bit and I hear them whispering to each other.
"You think you can handle it?" Owen asks.
"Yea, I think so." Hunter says.
"You want me to go with you?" Ethan asks.
Hunter pauses thinking it over. "No, I think I'll be fine."
(What the hell are they talking about? Handle what? And how the hell am I going to close the door without them knowing I was eavesdropping... s**t!")
I open the door fast. "Hey, why are you guys whispering?"
"You're imagining things girl." Nathan says smiling.
(I wasn't expecting them to answer anyways, it was just so I could close the door.)
"Whatever." I say slamming the door closed.
Hunter walks to the driver side and gets in. He starts the car and opens the windows which I find odd since he never does that.
(Maybe he isn't feeling good and needs some air.)
"Are you feeling better now?" I ask.
He smiles nodding. "Yea, I am."
"So, are we doing the chem assignment today or tomorrow?" I ask.
He gives me a glance. "I think we can work on it today."
"Okay, you're place or mine?"
"Mine." He says.
"Okay."
The whole way to his house, he doesn't say anything but he keeps giving me glances here and there. We get to his house and head inside.
"There they are." Katherine says with a big smile.
"Hi, Mrs. Lock." I smile.
"Hello, sweetheart." She walks over to me and gives me a hug. She lets go and holds me in place, then, starts looking at my neck.
I look at Hunter confused.
"Mom?" Hunter says looking at her with his eyes wide.
She looks at him and smiles awkwardly. Hunter squints his eyes like he just realized something.
"You knew?" He asks.
She smiles and nods, then looks at me.
"I'm glad you're here, I made a cake for Hunter." She says smiling and looks at Hunter. "So once your dad gets here, we're singing you happy birthday."
Hunter groans annoyed and I laugh but I stop when he gives me a look I've never seen before, almost like he's admiring me.
"Lilith honey, go upstairs, I have to talk to my son." She says looking at Hunter like he's in trouble.
I nod and head upstairs but I catch the beginning of their conversation.
"How? When did you know?" Hunter asks.
"Since the first time. But.... haven't... mark.... yet?
Once I'm upstairs, I can't hear them anymore.
I sit on his bed feeling a little tired.
I sigh taking my books out, I put them on the bed and walk to the window. From here you can see the whole forest.
It looks beautiful. I've always liked how they live within the woods. If I wasn't so scared of sharp teeth animals, I would love to live in a place like this.
I turn around and find Hunter leaning on the door, staring at me.
"Hey, everything okay?" I ask.
He smiles. "Yea." He walks to the bed and sits, grabbing his book.
"Alright, so we should be able to finish this in about an hour or so." I say.
"Okay." He says smiling.
And that's what we do, it actually takes us an hour and a half because Hunter kept getting distracted.
"My dad will be back in about thirty minutes. My mom insists that you stay to sing." He says looking annoyed at the whole idea.
"Yea that's fine. By the way, Jade was asking about you at lunch." I say.
He looks at me with a serious expression. "I don't care about her."
"... Okay? So I guess you're not dating anymore?"
He shakes his head. "No."
"Alright but one more thing..." I squint my eyes at him. "... you ghost me again and you're getting it, *me entiendes?*(Do you understand me? In Spanish) I say pointing a finger at him.
He laughs. "Yes, I promise you I will never ever do it again."
"Good, so now what? Movie?" I ask.
"Whatever you want." He says smiling.
"A show then, since we don't have enough time." I say.
He nods. "Bob's Burgers?"
I laugh. "Yes!" One of my favorite shows.
We watch one episode and then his mother calls us downstairs.
"There they are. Come, sit while I bring the cake." Katherine says going into the kitchen.
"I want to sit next to Lil." Hayden says.
"Sorry buddy, Hunter is the one that gets to sit with her, you sit with mom." Wesley, hunter's dad says.
"That's not fair." Hayden says whining. "None of this is fair, I claimed her first." He mumbles looking sad.
"That's not how it works and you know it." Wesley says.
(Claimed me?) I giggle at that.
Katherine comes out of the kitchen with a cake.
Hunter groans while we sing happy birthday to him, the whole time he kept rolling his eyes and once we are done, we eat some cake.
"So Lilith, how do you feel about wolves?" Wesley asks.
I see Hunter jerk his head to him, giving him almost like a warning look.
(Why the random question?)
I look at him confused by the sudden question. "Wolves? I think they are scary, especially with all of the attacks that happen in town."
He nods. "Well you know, not all of them are that scary i-" Hunter cuts him off. "Lil let me take you home."
"Oh... okay."
Wesley gives him an irritated look.
I say goodbye to his family and we head out.
Once in front of my house, I turn to Hunter. "Hey, come inside, I want to give you something."
"Okay." He says.
We head inside and my dad is cooking something. The whole house smells delicious.
"There you are." My dad says coming out of the kitchen.
He then looks at Hunter. "You're eighteen today, right?"
"Yes." Hunter says.
My father then stares at me. "You okay?" He asks me, looking concerned.
"Yea, why?" I look at him feeling confused.
He smiles. "No reason, come, I made a lot of food. Hunter, will you stay?"
Hunter smiles. "Yea, I'd love to."
"Ok, it will be ready soon." My dad looks at Hunter and gives him a pointed look, then walks to the kitchen.
"Come on." I pull Hunter to my room and sit him on the bed.
"Here, happy birthday." I hand him the gift bag.
"Lil, you didn't have to get me anything."
"I know, but I wanted to. Open it." I say smiling.
He scuffles through it. "A game?"
Yea, Nathan and Owen said you wanted that one and I figured it would be fun to beat you at it." I say smirking.
He smiles but doesn't fight back which is surprising.
"There's more, keep looking." I say.
He smiles. "Oh, candy, and it’s my favorite too." He then takes out the shirt and bust out laughing.
"Really Lil? I'm a virgin." I got him a t-shirt that says I'm a virgin.
"Yea and you better wear it." I say smiling.
He keeps laughing.
"There's one more thing." I take a small box from my drawer and give it to him. "Here."
He takes it, opens it, and sees a bracelet with a golden puzzle piece dangling on it.
"Lil, this is nice." He says looking at it.
I smile. "Yep, and your piece completes my piece." I say holding my hand up so he can see my bracelet.
He puts it on and I get closer to him. I hold my hand next to his and the puzzle pieces match perfectly.
"Dinner is ready!" My dad yells from downstairs. I get up and look at him. He is still looking at his bracelet, smiling.
"Ready for some good food, birthday boy?"
He gets up and smiles. "Yea, but wait."
He grabs my hand and pulls me to him, giving me a hug. I smile and hug him back.
(This actually feels nice, we've hugged before but...)
"Thank you, Lil." He whispers in my ear.
"By the way, you're not going to tell me what happened today? Why have you all been acting so weird?" I ask.
He doesn't say a thing and just continues to hug me.
I sigh. "I never knew guys were so complicated." I mumble which makes him laugh.
He stops laughing and puts his face near my neck and I can feel I'm... smelling me?
"What? Do I smell?" I say feeling dread at the thought of me smelling bad.
"No, not at all." He says hugging me tighter.
About a minute passes and now it's feeling a little awkward, he won't let me go.
"My dad is waiting." I say softly.
He sighs. "Okay." He lets me go and we walk downstairs.
"Hey, everything is ready, take a seat." Dad says. We do that and start eating.
"So Hunter, how has your birthday been?" Dad asks.
"Great." He says smiling.
"Good... and you, are you ok?" Dad asks looking at me.
"Why do you keep asking me that dad?" I ask confused.
"No, no reason, no reason." He shakes his head.
"If that's a way for you to ask about my day? Then I'll tell you that it has been the weirdest. Everyone keeps acting weird and no one tells me anything." I say now annoyed with both my dad and Hunter.
Hunter scratches his head and my dad looks away.
We finish our dinner and then I accompany Hunter to the door.
"Oh, give me a sec, I left something in your room." He says running up the stairs.
I look at all his stuff.
(He has everything here, doesn't he? Whatever.)
He comes back and I open the door for him but he doesn't leave, he hugs me again.
"Lil..." He whispers.
"Yea?" I say.
He shakes his head. "Nothing." He lets go and leaves.
I close the door and walk up the stairs and decide that I am done with this day. Everything will go back to normal tomorrow... right?
