Chapter Nine Johnnie was right to insist on visiting the Big Apple, as he and Susan soon discovered. Indeed, New York was sparkling in the night. Shops were festively decorated, Christmas lights were literally everywhere and, despite the cold, the streets were bustling with people. Johnnie knew that the downtown area would be heavily congested, but he would drive there nonetheless. The traffic would not deter him; it was an ideal chance for them to see something much different than the quiet town of Cornwall and he would take full advantage of it. While they were on Fifth Avenue, Susan kept gazing at the numerous stores and at the people, walking up and down the street, shopping and in high spirits. Nevertheless, Johnnie had not driven all the way from Cornwall, just to gaze at the store
