Chapter 4

Seven days had passed since that tense dinner at the Don Pedro family's mansion, and Vanessa's life had taken an unexpected turn. As she woke up on the seventh morning after the dinner, Vanessa felt a sense of unease, a mix of anticipation and worry. She found herself unusually tired, and a wave of dizziness washed over her. Her body began aching as she dragged herself out of bed. She dismissed it as a result of the stressful week she had endured. Her appetite had also been off, and certain smells made her feel queasy. At breakfast, she found herself avoiding her usual coffee, as the aroma suddenly made her nauseous. Her appetite, once healthy and normal, had diminished, and even her favorite foods seemed unappealing. She started to experience subtle yet unusual cravings for foods she rarely ate. As she woke up this particular morning she rushed to the bathroom and managed to get to the toilet before she regurgiated all of the food she had managed to force down her throat the night before. It was the same thing as the night before and the one before that. As she heaved over the toilet the realization that she might be pregnant slowly crept into her mind. Panic and anxiety mingled, causing her emotions to spiral into something of a rollercoaster. What was she going to if she really was pregnant? How was she going to care for a baby on her own? She tried to push the thought away, afraid of facing the truth, but her body seemed to have a mind of its own, reminding and confirming her of her deepest fear. Her breasts felt tender, and she experienced a strange heaviness in her lower abdomen. She felt more emotional than usual, easily moved to tears by the smallest things. Sleep was elusive, as she found herself waking up frequently during the night, her mind racing with thoughts about what the future might hold. Once her stomach was sufficiently empty she decided that she was going to know once and for all if she was worrying about nothing. Curiosity and concern finally got the better of her. As the evening set in, Vanessa found herself at the pharmacy, purchasing a pregnancy test kit. Back in her apartment, she followed the instructions with trembling hands, trying to steady her nerves. As she waited for the results, time seemed to stand still. The seconds felt like hours, and her heart pounded in her chest. She hoped with every fibre of her being that the test would end up being negative. The little indicator finally appeared, and Vanessa held her breath as she looked at the test. Positive. Shock and a flood of emotions washed over her Tears welled up in her eyes as her thoughts jumbled and intertwined into an incoherent mess. Fear, joy, uncertainty, and hope all collided within her. She sat there on the bathroom floor, trying to process the magnitude of the news. She had a million thoughts racing through her mind. If she was pregnant that meant that Simon was the father because she couldn't recall them using a condom and he was the last person she had s*x with. What would this mean for her and Simon? How would his family react to the news? Could she handle this responsibility? She didn't have the answers to those questions but one thing she knew was that she was going to keep it a secret. Not only was she getting married to Nathan next month, she had looked up the Don Pedro family and found out that Simon also had an actress girlfriend he was dating. Telling him she was carrying his child would blow up their relationship. And also the fact that she didn't trust their family. There was something sketchy about them. Especially Nathan. As the night wore on, Vanessa stayed in her position on the bathroom floor and allowed herself to feel the emotions coursing through her. Suddenly, a knock on the door startled her. She tried to remember if she was expecting someone as she rushed to her feet, heart pounding, and hastily straightened her appearance. She quickly hid the pregnancy kit away. As she made her way to the door, she glanced back at the bathroom, hoping everything was in order. Opening the door, she found her mother standing there, her expression a mix of concern and annoyance. "Vanessa, finally! I've been trying to reach you for the past week. Why haven't you been answering my calls?" her mother exclaimed, pushing past Vanessa to enter the apartment. Her mother was the last person Vanessa wanted to see but it seemed she was going to have to deal with her whether she wanted to or not. Vanessa tried to remain composed. "I've been busy, Mom.” Her mother's gaze swept over Vanessa, a critical eye taking in her appearance. "Busy? Doing what exactly?" "Work and other things," Vanessa replied. She knew her excuse was flimsy but she really didn't care. Her mother's eyes narrowed, and she scrutinized Vanessa's demeanor. "You've been avoiding me, haven't you?" she asked, her voice cold. “Can you blame me?” Her mother's gaze lingered on her for a moment longer, but then she brushed it off with a dismissive wave. "Well, no matter. I'm here now, and that's what's important." As Vanessa led her mother into the living room, she tried to maintain a facade of normalcy. Her mother was like a bloodhound when it came to secrets. “I came here to talk about something important." Vanessa's heart skipped a beat, fearing that her mother had somehow found out about the pregnancy. Even though that was completely impropable since she just found out herself. "What is it?" "The wedding," her mother declared, her eyes narrowing again. "We've set a date, and it will be in two months' time." Vanessa's mind raced, trying to process the sudden announcement. "Wait, what wedding? Whose wedding?" Her mother rolled her eyes. "Don't be stupid girl. Yours, of course. Nathan's family and I have discussed it, and we've decided that a two-month engagement will be sufficient." Vanessa's heart sank as the realization dawned on her. This was happening. This was seriously happening. She was getting married. "I… I don't know if that's a good idea," Vanessa stammered, trying to find the right words to explain her hesitation. Her mother scoffed. "Don't be ridiculous, Vanessa. This is a fantastic opportunity for you. For us. The wedding will be a grand affair, much better than you can do on your own that's for sure. It's a match made in heaven." "I need more time to think about this," Vanessa insisted, her mind still reeling from the news of the pregnancy. Her mother's eyes narrowed, and she crossed her arms. "You've had enough time. I won't have you backing out now and embarrassing this family." Vanessa felt a surge of anger at her mother's callousness, but she managed to keep her composure. "I just need a little more time to be sure. This is a huge decision." Her mother's lips formed a thin line. “Time's up, Vanessa. I know you have doubts but this is the best thing you can do for our family. It would make your father proud.” Vanessa's eyes teared up at the mention of her father and she blamed it on her hormones. “Dad would want what's best for me.” “And this isn't? You're marrying into a family that has the biggest textile company in California, there are fates far worse than that, I can assure you.” Vanessa remained mute so her mother came closer to her and squeezed her shoulder. “You don't have a choice.”
