Chapter One
Vanessa stood in front of her mom, tears streaming down her cheeks as she yelled at her. "You can’t just marry me off like that! I’m not some kind of property to be traded! I have feelings and dreams of my own. I won’t let you just throw them away!" Mrs. Megan stood there, her face impassive, listening to her outburst passively with a stern look in her eyes. She wasn't budging. "Vanessa, you know how important this marriage is for the family," she said calmly. "I don’t care! I won’t do it, and I will not marry someone I don’t love just because it’s convenient for you!" Vanessa screamed, her voice breaking with emotion. Mrs. Megan sighed heavily. "You're being selfish, Vanessa. This isn’t just about you; it’s about our entire family and our future. You won’t understand." Vanessa was beyond reasoning. She had always been a dutiful daughter, but she was drawing the line this time. She couldn’t sacrifice her happiness for the sake of family duty. "I won’t do it; I don’t want to be a part of this arranged marriage!" she yelled, her sobs making it difficult to articulate her words. Her mother's stance remained unyielding and steely and Vanessa knew that she was not going to change her mind. “I hate this, and I hate you,” Vanessa yelled before storming out of the house. Her heart was filled with a potent combination of anger and pain. She felt betrayed by her mother. The one person she thought she could trust more than anybody. She thought that she had her best interests at heart, but now it,was beginning to see that she was no more than a pawn to be used in her mother's game. As she walked in the driving rain, Vanessa became more and more sad and depressed. She wasn't ready to be a wife. She wasn't ready to settle down, she still had more of her life to live. In the depths of her despair, she knew that there was only one person who could provide the comfort and understanding she really needed right now. Fabian had been a pillar is,support for her when she really needed it and right now she wanted nothing more than him to wrap his arms around her and tell her everything would be alright. With that thought stuck in her head, she changed direction. She didn't care about the rain that soaked her to the bone as she hurried to his apartment. Vanessa clung to the hope that he would understand her turmoil and provide the solace she desperately needed. Arriving at Fabian's door, she tried the door. It was locked. That struck her as odd because it was past 9 at night and Fabian was usually at home by that time. Nevertheless, she dug her keys out of the pocket of her dripping leather jacket. He probably when to get something from the store, she would wait for him inside away from the chill rain. Selecting the right key from the bunch, she stuck it inside the hole and twisted it. Once it clicked open, she didn't hesitate to enter. The house was dark so she flipped the light switch. When the lights came on Vanessa was completely unprepared for what met her eyes. It shook her to her very core. Fabian was splayed out on the white couch, stark naked. But that wasn't what caused her mouth to drop. Writhing underneath him was the petite form of her best friend, Beverly. She had caught them in the middle of their lovemaking and now they both scrambled for the blanket to cover themselves. The sight pierced her heart like a thousand knives, compounding the pain she was already feeling. When she finally spoke, her voice trembled with shock and anguish, "What is going on here? What are you doing? Both of you?!" Fabian, still trying to regain composure, spoke up, "Vanessa, please, let me explain. It's not what you think." "Not what I think? You don't know what I'm thinking. And there's absolutely nothing to explain, everything is pretty clear!" Vanessa retorted, her voice laced with hurt and betrayal as tears welled in her eyes. "I trusted you, Fabian. And Beverly, how could you do this to me? You were supposed to be my friend!" Beverly tried to speak, but Vanessa's anger was too intense, she put her hand up to stop her. "Save it. I don't want to hear any lies." Fabian stepped closer to Vanessa, a hint of frustration in his voice. "Look, Vanessa, our relationship was falling apart. We were growing apart. I was feeling neglected. This just happened, and it made me realize that maybe we're not meant to be together." Vanessa's eyes blazed with anger. "So, instead of talking to me, you decided to cheat? You disrespected me and our relationship." "I'm sorry it had to be this way, I swear I was going to tell you. I hate how you found out but maybe it's for the best," Fabian said, his tone defensive. "For the best? That's rich coming from you. This is the worst thing you could have done to me," Vanessa shot back, her voice going up two octaves. "If you're going to be a b***h I think you should leave my house," Fabian said, his patience obviously running thin. “You don't have to tell me. I was leaving anyway. I hope you rot in hell.” With tears streaming down her cheeks, Vanessa turned away, realizing that Fabian was not the person she had thought he was. Her world felt like it was collapsing around her, and she stumbled out of his apartment, leaving the two betrayers behind. With no place to run to and her emotions in disarray, Vanessa found herself seeking solace in the quiet confines of a nearby clubhouse. She shuffled in, her body still shaking with pain and anger, and sank into a chair. The clubhouse was dimly lit, and a few people occupied the space, enjoying a drink or two. Vanessa tried to keep her composure as she wiped away her tears. She didn't want to draw attention to herself. She ordered one glass of whiskey and settled in to drown her sorrows, as Henry, her ex-lover, tried to harass her.
