Season 1: Survival
Chapter 2: "The Streets of Kampala"
Kampala, Uganda. 2005.
Kofi walked for hours, his feet aching and his stomach growling. He had never felt so alone and scared in his life.
As he walked, Kofi took in the sights and sounds of the city. He saw vendors selling all sorts of goods, from fresh produce to second-hand clothes. He saw people of all ages, from young children to elderly grandparents, rushing to and fro.
But Kofi also saw the darker side of the city. He saw beggars and street children, struggling to survive. He saw thieves and con artists, preying on the vulnerable.
As the sun began to set, Kofi realized that he needed to find a place to sleep. He had no money, no food, and no family. He was completely alone.
Kofi spotted a group of street children huddled together in a doorway. They looked up at him warily, but one of them, a girl with a kind face, beckoned him over.
"Hey, you look lost," she said. "Do you want to join us for the night?"
Kofi hesitated for a moment, unsure if he could trust these strangers. But the girl's kind face put him at ease, and he nodded gratefully.
As Kofi settled in with the group, he realized that they were all orphans, just like him. They had all lost their families, and were struggling to survive on the streets.
The girl, whose name was Akua, took Kofi under her wing. She showed him where to find food and water, and how to avoid the dangers of the streets.
As the night wore on, Kofi began to feel a sense of belonging. He had found a new family, a group of people who understood him and cared for him.
But just as Kofi was starting to feel safe, he heard a loud noise coming from outside. It sounded like footsteps, heavy and deliberate.
Akua's eyes locked onto Kofi's, and he could see the fear in her eyes.
"What's wrong?" Kofi whispered.
Akua's voice was barely audible. "It's the police. They're looking for us."
Kofi's heart began to pound as he realized that he and his new friends were in grave danger.
And then, just as the police were about to burst into the doorway, Akua grabbed Kofi's hand and pulled him into the shadows.
"Run!" she whispered.
Kofi didn't need to be told twice. He took off running, Akua by his side, as the police shouted and chased after them.
