Neil opened his front door at eight-thirty the next morning expecting to see Pattie arriving early. Instead it was Marshall, who said, “Did you get any sleep at all last night?” Stepping aside, Neil shook his head. “Not much. I kept waking up with every creak and groan an old house makes.” “Then this might help.” Marshall withdrew his hand from behind his back to give Neil a cardboard pet carrier. Neil took it hesitantly, asking, “What’s this?” “Take a look,” Marshall replied, a smile playing across his lips as he leaned against the door jamb. Tentatively, Neil opened one side of the top and peered in. “What…? Why?” Apparently more than amused, Marshall told him, “It’s a cat. You know, one of those furry little creatures who generally drive dogs crazy and act as if they own the world
