Sean (Jordan’s father) POV
“My office.” I said curtly and walked away.
Carly followed behind me, refusing to look at me when I held the door open for her and closed it behind us when we were both safe in the office away from prying eyes.
“Sit.” I commanded.
Carly’s eyes widened as they darted between the chairs in front of my desk and the sofa in the corner and I could tell that she was starting to get nervous.
I rolled my eyes, grabbed her arm and yanked her towards one of the chairs in front of my desk and made her sit down harshly.
Carly whimpered from my harsh grip, making me snarl at her.
Why did she always have to be so damn sensitive?
I sat down behind my desk and studied her. She was rocking slightly back and forth, rubbing her thumb against her index finger at a fast pace.
I sighed in annoyance.
“Stop fidgeting, you imbecile.” I snapped.
Carly crossed her arms tightly over her chest, looking down on the floor.
“I have a problem, Carly.” I said.
Carly didn’t reply, she didn’t even look at me.
“You are going to be Alpha in two weeks, and you and I both know that it’s not going to work out.”
Carly nodded, but still didn’t say anything.
“To keep the Alpha title in the family, I want Jordan to take over instead.” I continued.
Carly frowned, but took out her tablet and started typing. I rolled my eyes.
“Just speak.” I muttered under my breath.
Carly didn’t pay attention to me. Instead she kept writing and held up the tablet when she was finished.
“You said that Jordan couldn’t be Alpha. He is not your eldest child.” I read from the tablet.
I nodded and leaned back in my chair.
“So I guess that I have to make him the eldest child.” I replied.
Carly looked confused, and I chuckled.
“You really are stupid, are you?” I sneered.
Carly pouted and started typing on her tablet again.
“Jordan says that I’m smart.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Let me break it down for you.” I snapped impatiently. “I’m going to give you a twenty second head start. You will have to run for the pack border. Cross the border and don’t ever come back here. If I catch you before that, I will kill you. Do you understand?”
Carly’s eyes widened and she stared at me.
“Are you stupid?!” I growled. “RUN!”
Tears welled up in her eyes and a whimper escaped her as she hesitantly got up from the chair.
“LEAVE!” I yelled.
I slammed my fist on the table and I saw Carly run for the door. When she had left, I counted down from twenty, cursing the Moon Goddess for giving me such a moron for a daughter.
There was no way she was going to make it off the pack lands before I caught her. But there was no way that I could let her live.
Jordan had to be the heir to the Alpha title, and there was no way that was happening unless Carly died.
When I reached zero, I took the small bag of things I had packed and went after her. I found her banging on Jordan’s bedroom door. Just as I came around the corner, her eyes widened in horror and she bolted down the stairs just as Jordan opened the door. His body was glistening with water droplets and he had a towel wrapped around his hips.
His eyes darted between Carly’s retreating back and me.
“What happened?” He asked. “What did you say to Carly?”
“Stay out of this, boy.” I snarled. “She got upset, as usual. I’m going to go find her. Go back inside your room.”
“But…”
I let out a breath and rolled my eyes.
Was everyone in my family incompetent? Why couldn’t anyone just follow simple instructions?
“GO BACK INSIDE!” I bellowed.
Jordan glanced at the direction where Carly had disappeared, and closed the door again.
As soon as he was gone, I stormed out of the packhouse and shifted into my wolf, took the small bag in my snout and took off after Carly. It wasn’t hard to pick up her scent, and I ran through the forest, trying to catch up with her.
For a moment, I contemplated letting her leave the pack. After all, she was my daughter. But there was always a chance that she was going to come back sooner or later, and I couldn’t have that. There was only one thing to do.
I spotted Carlty running ahead of me, and it didn’t take long until I had caught up with her. Carly looked over her shoulder and saw me getting closer, and she let out a frightened scream as I pounced on her.
I shifted back mid leap, making me land on top of her in human form. I was straddling her chest and pinned her arms down underneath my legs.
“I’m really sorry about this, Carly.” I said. “But there is no other way.”
Carly opened her mouth to scream, but I put my hands over her throat and squeezed tightly until she was squirming underneath me.
“Shh, shh.” I whispered while I kept my deadly grip on her throat and clamped my knees around her torso to keep her arms in place.
Carly squirmed and coughed, and I forced myself to look away from her panicked eyes as her lips turned blue and her eyes became bloodshot.
I heaved a sigh of relief when Carly stilled and I leaned down to hear if she was still breathing.
She wasn’t.
I allowed my tears to flow freely as I picked her up and hugged her closely to my chest. Thoughts about Carly when she was a baby threatened to enter my mind, a time when she was just a normal girl and I was the proudest dad in the world. But if I allowed myself to think about that, I couldn’t go through with this.
I carefully put Carly’s body down and grabbed the bag that I had dropped.
Inside was a rope, and I quickly threw it over a branch and tied the end around Carly’s neck. Then I hoisted her up in the tree, making it look like a suicide.
I moved around some finishing touches to perfect the illusion and looked at my handiwork. It looked like Carly had killed herself. I just needed to mindlink the guards in the area to come help me take care of her body.
As soon as I sent the mindlink, I walked up to her and hugged her body tightly. My scent was all over her, so if people found me hugging her like this, they wouldn’t question it.
The warriors took down her body and carried her to the pack hospital while I turned back to the packhouse.
This was going to be tough news to break to the kids.
