A Doctor For a Mate

Who is she?

THE drive toward the hangar was quiet. She and Tati were sitting in the backseat while two of the sentinels were in front occupying the driver and passenger seats.

She leaned on the leather seat of the car. Her eyes went to the calling card that she was holding in her left.

The doctor eventually let them go despite her disapproval regarding her health. The calling card has been forcefully pushed in her hand before finally releasing her.

UNO STONE

She stared at the name of the doctor longer. She released a long sigh after a while.

“Who is she?” Tati asked, finally breaking the silence and the tension in the car.

“Apparently, she was the one who saved my life.”

“Who is she to you?”

“Someone I don’t need.”

She glanced at the glass window when her beta did not say another word.

Dread enveloped her. That one person that she did not want to meet in this life has finally appeared.

Years before she reached the coming of age for the children of the moon like her, she wished to the moon goddess that she postponed the time when she could meet the person destined for her. And the moon goddess answered her prayers. At seventeen, she has not found the mate that every werewolf longed for.

The Alpha, her father, was very furious. He was very adamant on giving her away. Despite being the only child, her father wanted a son. He was very disappointed that he got a female child. He did not see any female deserving enough to become an alpha.

He used to be a great father. He was until that fateful day. She was five years old.

Winona saw her mother bleeding one day. Blood was dripping from her legs. She called for the warriors to help her since her father was in the training field at that time.

Her mother was sent to the pack doctor. She stayed at the infirmary for two days. When she went home, she learned that they lost her little brother and her mother can no longer bear a child.

Her father become a different person. He started abusing his mate. At first, he swears and shout insults. Months later, he became physical.

The pack members were unable to stop him.

The alpha treated his subordinates differently, too. The trainings became rigorous than normal. Small mistakes, the member of the pack and warriors are being punished.

Their pack, the Krieger pack, are known to having great warriors for generations. However, with the changed in their alpha, the pack has produced stronger and better warriors. They better be or they would pay a price. At least, there was one positive thing from her father’s tyranny.

Winona did not escape the abuse from the alpha, either.  Even if she was the only child, she was treated as an ordinary member of the pack.

When she come to an age that she can train, she received more reprimand that the other members of the pack. Despite being used to the verbal insults of her father, tears fell from her eyes when he started ranting during the pack training.

At the age of seventeen, when his father learned that she was not able to find her mate in the pack, she was sent to nearby packs in hope to find the one destined for her.

The travel continued for months. To no avail, she was not able to find the one for her.

The pack training became a torture for her. During the mock battle, she was sent to fight with great fighters regardless of the gender. She was sent to the infirmary often that she lost count.

Pack members gave her their sympathy but they were under the alpha’s command not to aid.

The luna, the alpha’s mate and Winona’s mother, has underwent a different abuse that she passed away when Winona reached eighteen. She succumbed to her sickness that if treated could been cured. Her death has no effect on the alpha either.

Often, the heir on the alpha position was inherited by the first borne of the current alpha unless refused by the first child. At the age of eighteen the heir can already take over the position. Yet, the alpha of the Krieger pack refused to let his only child to ascend his position.

It was the last straw for Winona.

She trained harder despite the ill-treatment she got from her father. She made herself stronger that she spent longer hours on training. She got the helped of the gamma, the alpha’s best friend but can no longer tolerate the cruelty of his friend.

She was twenty-two years old when she finally got her chance. They were in the training ground.

She made sure that she got her father’s attention. She did not follow his command while they were in the simulated mock fight.

Infuriated with her disobedience, the alpha challenged her for a battle. She accepted it but she asked for a prize. The alpha position.

Her father humiliated her in front of every one but she cared less. She had enough and train enough for this day.

The alpha accepted the challenged.

Before the fight started, she requested for the gamma and beta to facilitate the match. However, her father told them not to intervene until one is dead.

Their protest went to deaf ears. The alpha was unwavering. The madness in his eyes showed how much he wanted to execute his opponent. He no longer recognized Winona as his blood.

Winona was admitted in the infirmary for two days after the fight. The first thing that she ordered upon claiming her birthright was burning the body of the defeated alpha.

She felt no remorse as she watched the body being devoured by the fire. She then asked for the warrior to send her to the pack doctor.

It was the door opening on her side that stopped Winona from the memory lane.

She shook her head before getting down from the car.

She spotted several warriors in the vicinity of the hangar. It was the same location that they were supposed to go last night until the ambush took place.

The pack’s Cessna and another bigger plane was in the site.

“The two warriors were sent home early this morning.” Tati informed her.

“Give them proper burial. Ask the family what we can do to them.” Tati nodded at her request. “Do you have the report regarding the investigation?”

“Working on it.” Her beta gestured for her to the Cessna. “The hospital already reported about your case with the police. It was an SOP for them. It was fortunate that the investigator was a halfling.”

Winona nodded.

Halflings happened when one of the parents was a werewolf and the other was human. Often, the halflings were unable to shift into their wolves but they stronger than normal human.

Halflings exist when a werewolf’s mate was a human. There was no case that a werewolf was able to impregnate a human that was not his mate or vice versa. It must be the way of the moon goddess to avoid confusion in the part of the human population.

Werewolf has been existing in the world like the human does. However, this co-existence was unknown to man. Well, only a few knows about them and the number they hold in the population.

Just like human, werewolves have its own government. They have the high alpha in every continent. Whereas, there was an alpha in every pack. The number of packs in every country varied on how big the country is. Often, there was a single alpha in every country.

But unlike human, every werewolf has a mate. If human spent their lifetime looking for his soulmate and eventually jumping from one relationship to another. For the werewolves, it was already pre-determined.

The moon goddess, or the mother of all werewolves, bestowed each werewolf a mate. This mate will be for life that the lost of one would often make the other succumbed to death. However, others were braved enough to go on with their lives for their children or for some greedy reasons like Winona’s father.

The mate can be recognized when the werewolf reached seventeen. It was the coming of age for the young werewolves. They would finally start their life the person meant for them.

A werewolf can distinguish his mate thought the touch of their skin. There is a flash of little electricity when their skin made contact. The pull of wanting to be with the person was there, too. It was immediate.

“I’m glad the luna is a woman.”

Winona glanced at Tati. They were already airborne. Her beta shrugged before continuing.

“I can never see myself calling a man a luna.” Her friend almost shiver at her own words. “Besides, she’s a doctor. She would be a great addition to the pack.”

“Shut up.”

“Well, at least the moon goddess has been listening to your prayers when it comes to your fated. Your mate came a little later and she’s a woman. A beautiful woman, by the way.”

“Shut it, Tati.”

Her beta paid her no mind that she started laughing. “And she’s very tall, my friend. She got a brain on her, too.”

“I will push you out if you don’t stop.”

“One more thing, Ana. This incident finally confirmed my theory.”

“What’s that?” She asked without even glancing at her friend.

“That you’re into women. I’ve never seen you taking interest at any man even during the alpha conferences. Those alphas were to die for but you never gave them attention.”

“They were assholes, too.”

‘Well, yeah.”

Winona exhaled before closing her eyes. The journey will be long and she hopes that her friend would think that she needs to rest after the ordeal she have been through.

“That doctor----”

She attempted to remove the beta’s seatbelt when Tati pushed her back. She made a gesture of sipping her mouth.

The alpha leaned back and closed her eyes again.
