(Avery's POV)
Today is my sixteenth birthday. It sucks that my mother has been died for ten years now and my father has been traveling so much with his work that I barely see him.
Last year was the last time my tutor came to the house. I passed all school grades. Father said I could begin college courses online so that is what I have been doing. Learning new things is beyond exciting.
Despite when father talked to me about him remarrying when I was ten, he hasn't. He says he is looking and will soon fine the right person but he still hasn't brought anyone home.
Not that I mind. I prefer for no one to replace my mother. I do not need a new women here trying to control our household, myself or my father. Maybe she will be nice and sweet like my mother. We could bond and become best of friends.
As long as father is happy, I will be happy.
I walk outside to the stables and visit snow, my beautiful white horse.
"Hello snow, how did you sleep?" I ask in a loving tone, as I begin brushing her long white tail. She's so beautiful. She neighs back at me and does a little snort, making me laugh.
"That good? Well then snow, shall we go for a run today?" I ask in excitement with a slight bow, as I see her eyes light up. I hop onto her back and take off with her. We run throughout the forest and meadow, then back around father's house.
After a few hours, I decide to head back to the stables so snow can rest and eat her dinner. After I set snow up with her dinner, fresh water and a deep rubbing of her hooves I take off to our house to prepare dinner.
As I am preparing mother's chicken pasta that I love, I hear a carriage pulling up. Who could that be? Father shouldn't be home for another two days. Unfortunately his work trip got delayed due to a storm knocking a tree over, which blocked his path home. I am upset he won't be here for my birthday, but I know he would never purposely miss my birthday.
I run to the front door and peek out. Who is that? I squint my eyes to get a better look and realize it's father's carriage.
He's home early, I think excitedly.
I run out onto the front deck and wait patiently for him to stop and exit the carriage. As he exits I see a concerned and nervous look on his face. What is wrong with him?
"Hello father. How was your trip? I am excited you are home early and were able to make it back on my birthday and safely of course." I say politely, as I give him a hug.
"Hello, my sweet princess. I have some news. While I was away I found a women, who I married. She has returned from my trip with me, bringing also her two lovely daughters. They are around your age my dear." Father says nervously as he returns my hug.
"Are you happy, father?" I ask as I pull away, so I can look at his face for honesty.
"Yes, Avery." Father says happily, though his smile looks fake.
I smile as I say, "I would love to meet them father. As long as your happy I am happy." I turn to the carriage as father walks back over to the carriage and helps a women with a bright green and orange puffy dress climb out. What is she wearing? She looks like she is dressed to go to a ball. Behind her comes out two girls maybe my age or a year older than me that look identical. They must be twins.
"Avery this is Delilah and Daphne, they are seventeen years old and both in senior year of their schooling. I will be hiring a tutor for them if they do not wish to attend the school near by." Father says as he points at the identical twins. Delilah has red curly hair, that goes to her shoulders with light green eyes and freckles. Daphne has straight red hair, that goes two inches past her shoulders with dark green eyes and freckles. If you don't pay attention to their specific features you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.
"And this is the women I married and their amazing mother, Diana." Father says as he looks at the women in the puffy ball gown. She has black straight hair with dull brown eyes and tan skin. The twins must take after their father because they look nothing like her. She has a scowl on her face as she takes me in and takes in our home. What is her problem?
Be kind.
Father is happy.
"It is very nice to meet you all." I say as I stick out my hand to shake my new step mother and step sisters hands. Only they look at my hand with disgust and do not even make an effort to shake my hand.
"Like I would touch YOUR hand." Daphne scoffs as she walks by me and into the house, with Delilah right behind her, while her nose is stuck up in the air.
Well they will be fun to deal with.
"Girls, be nice." Diana, my stepmother says with a glint of hatred in her eyes. What have I ever done to her? She turns to my father with a smile before continuing. "Dear, I think the girls are just tired from the long trip and maybe we should set up their rooms so they can rest."
"Of course Diana. I have a room they can share and then I will show you to our room." Father says sweetly. We have four rooms but one is in the attic, mother and father never got around to completing that one though.
"Oh dear, I told you the twins can't share a room they will fight the whole time." Diana says sadly as she looks to the ground.
"There is only three rooms completed, Diana. I have one more room in the attic but I never got around to completing it." Father says in concern.
"Dear, what are we going to do? The twins also can't go into attics or basements due to their phobias, remember?" Diana says in concern as she starts to cry.
Is she faking?
Who has phobias of a basement and attic? Also why would twins fight so much?
Be kind.
Father is happy.
I keep repeating to myself. I guess I should solve this problem for father.
"I will take the attic room and fix it up. That way the twins have their own rooms." I say with a slight smile. Father looks concern but also slightly relieved.
"Oh thank you, Avery." Diana says as she smiles at father and then walks by me. I knew she was faking. There was no way she was really crying.
"Thank you Avery. Are you sure about this though? There is that hole in the floor of the attic still and the insulation needs to go up because the heat doesn't reach the attic." Father asks in concern while he walks up to me.
"Of course father. I don't mind. I can do all that, I did learn from the best. As long as your happy I'm happy." I say with a fake smile. I learned to build things from mother and father and they built our whole house and stable. So I know I can do this.
"Thank you, princess. Oh by the way happy birthday." Father says as step mother starts yelling for him so he starts walking away and into the house.
"Thank you father." I whisper to myself.
He turns around to look at me with a smile, "One more thing princess. They are allergic to the red sauce your mother uses so any meals for them can not have any. We will just put it on yours and mine. Also don't forget to not use your powers anymore." He whispers to me as my step mother screams again for him and he runs off with an apologetic look on his face.
I walk to my room and pack up all my stuff. Slowly moving all my stuff, clothes and bed into the attic.
What a way to end my birthday.
