Chapter 3 “One thing I’m never going to get used to is the smell.” Carter sat in the car beside Mason, who spared him a glance before looking back to the road. The trek home from another supply run had taken place for the most part in silence, Mason’s vehicle leading the convoy of two cars and a van. He grasped Carter’s need to break the stillness at the first sight of the gate though he didn’t welcome it. The other man sought understanding, a way to make sense of what happened before they faced the others, but short of finding an explanation, Carter fell back on mentioning something less horrifying.
