Unknown POV
The light shined into the stained window, allowing colors to cascade around my room. I sat up cracking my neck and back, letting out a deep sigh. I have had nothing to do for the last week and I still had two months of vacation until the highlands needed me for the next mission. Azrael claimed I needed a break, but I didn’t know what to do with myself. So far I had put an energy shield up to make the garden feel like spring no matter the season, and found a new mineral cave to harvest sun gems that helps harness the energy of the sun to store and use later. The highlands run off of sun gems, so finding it was well rewarded.
I pulled on a pair of black trousers and a matching black shirt with a large tan trench coat, pushing my sandy blond hair back. The wind was cold and the snow had begun to stick to the ground alerting that winter was drawing near. I headed out to the garden to see how the spring shield was holding up.
“Cal!” Izzy shouted, waving her arms around trying to get my attention. I smiled at the young girl who was running towards me. Her fiery red curls looked like her mom's, and her lavender eyes were that of her father. “Hey kiddo,” I reached out as she jumped into my arms. I could see Ian running after the little girl out of breath. This little girl gave her parents a run for their money, but she meant the world to me.
“I’m sorry Callum,” Ian huffed, catching up to us finally. “She ran off the moment she saw your door open.”
“No worries, you know she’s my favorite god daughter,” I grinned down and the devilish child clinging to my arms. “I’m your only god daughter, uncle Cal!” she reached up, slapping my cheeks playfully, holding my face. “True, but you are still my favorite.”
I put her down and she ran back to Ian hugging his leg.
As they left for their morning tea, I made my way to the gardens. The spring shields seemed to be holding up nicely, I could see the snow slipping off the dome of energy as I peered up top to analyze the magic seal supporting the sun gem.
All of a sudden I felt uneasy, the energy of Illyria had shifted, I could feel the buzz in the wind as it brushed past my skin. I shuddered, breathing in the scent of a coming storm. It was delicious and hypnotic. I could never smell anything but this and I would be content.
Closing my eyes, I allowed the air and the energy to wrap around to try and find its source, but I couldn’t pinpoint it, it was just somewhere south near the border. I think I found something to do with my vacation, I thought to myself. I need to discover what caused this shift.
I pulled together a bag of some clothes and a few relics just in case anything would happen. I planned on going to wolf territories and I wasn’t too happy about it. I knew I was born in Morning Star and I had a wolf in me, but I wasn’t accepted by them so my mother who was a Seraphim brought me to the highlands and raised me here.
“So where are you going my son?” Kalin asked me standing in front of the door.
“I felt something changed in Illyria, I’m going to find what caused it,” I turned to see my mother giving her a soft smile. She was such a petite and dainty woman, but her looks are deceiving, she could take down any creature in a single move. Her soft brown hair cut into a bob making her face slim, her eyes matched my own with a rose gold color. Her skin was bronze and she had freckles lining her nose.
“Be safe Cal,” she replied softly.
“Mom, you and the high court wanted me to take a vacation, so just think of it as that,” I chuckled. I pulled my sword scabbard around my waist and slipped my sword called Light Bringer into it.
“I know hun, I just worry this is your first time leaving the highlands without it being for work. I just want you to have fun and not just worry about whatever you felt,” Kalin came over to me and zipped up my bag.
I laughed at her worry, “hey maybe I’ll bring back a wife for you to dote on.”
“I could only wish,” she rolled her eyes at me.
