The Warning

‘’ Your Highness, why did you change your order?’’ Thane demanded as he walked into my office, barging in without knocking. That was not the first time he would do that, and I know it was because his father was one of the powerful elders on the council, and I wouldn’t have gotten this far without his help. Because of his father, he became the gamma even though he was lacking in skills and character. I had always wanted to get rid of him, but each time, his father begged on his behalf, bringing up his support when I was lowest. Having no other choice, I let him continue to be my gamma, and yet, every time, he makes me question why I shouldn't have to listen to his father.

‘’To whom do I owe the pleasure that doesn’t come with knocking?’’ Sarcasm, I know, but that was the best way to talk to him without wanting to rip his head off.

‘’I apologize, Your Highness. I should have knocked,’’ He bowed, but I knew that it was all for a show and he wouldn’t look at my side.

‘’ why are you in my office?’’ My words were direct because I wanted answers as to why he would barge in after I gave my orders to lock Elowen and the boy unless he had come here for them.

‘’it is about the human princess,’’ he replied, just as I had assumed. ‘’ Don’t you think you are making a mistake letting her go like that? She and that human boy killed our guards, and yet they are still alive!’’

I raised my brows at him in confusion, wondering what he might say next, but when he didn’t say anything, I asked him a direct question. ‘’And what is it you want me to do about it?’’

‘’The order. Such people don’t deserve to live. They are supposed to die, and then we will begin the cleansing of the remaining humans until none of them is left.’’

I didn’t quite get what he was trying to say until I asked him to repeat himself, and when he did, I figured he was talking about how we could get rid of the humans. ‘’ so you are saying that my judgment is terrible?’’

He nodded.

I heaved a deep sigh and placed both hands on my table, tapping my fingers gently while he watched, waiting for what I had to say. ‘’There is nothing I can do about it. The girl already begged for her life, and so I pardoned her.’’

‘’And the boy?’’

‘’ I placed a finger on my forehead, thinking about what to say. At first, I didn’t plan on saving the boy, but I had no options since Elowen had offered herself up to me. If Thane were going to have a problem with that, it would probably be because he had seen me the previous night with Elowen. And he could only recognize her because she smelled like me.

That is one of the things I didn’t want anyone to find out about. If words come out that she is my mate, she would become my greatest weakness. ‘’If that is all, then you may leave.’’

Thane hesitated and didn’t take a step away from my office. His body moved, not towards the door but back and front in my office. He eyed me suspiciously and then spoke up. ‘’ What is the human to you, Your Highness?’’

Not the question I was expecting, but well, I knew he was going to ask soon. ‘’she is…’’

‘’ she was in heat that night that you carried her from the dungeon, and it only means that she could be…’’

I cut him off before he could finish. ‘’ Don’t jump to useless conclusions. That human means nothing to him but someone I want to share my bed with. She is useless, and the only reason I didn’t end her life today is that I still need her to control the humans and find out if other humans are hiding! And for the boy, he will be useful in fighting with us in war. Don’t start jumping to conclusions because of what you think.’’

He bowed. ‘’Apologies, your Highness,’’ There was no sincerity in his tone, and it didn’t stop him from talking. ‘’ I just had to make sure she is not your mate, and my sister had told me about how you have been ignoring her and…’’

I slammed my hands on the table and stood up. He jumped in fear and stopped moving, then he took a step backward. ‘’you keep apologizing, but your tone is saying something, anything. I am not obligated to tell you anything about what I want or don’t want. Your sister will be the Luna queen, and that is it. I don’t care if she wants to see me or not. I have other things to worry about than to sit down and have a cup of tea talking about the same things over and over again.’’

Thane rubbed a hand on his forehead and nodded. ‘’That will be all your highness. I appreciate you wanting to talk to me, but he paused.

I gave him a questioning look before looking away. When I sat down again, I closed my eyes, hoping I wouldn’t see his face again when I opened them.

‘’Your Highness, since you said the human is just someone you want to share your bed with, I shall believe you,’’ he said. ‘’I will be on my way,’’ he announced, but I didn’t respond.

I knew he was gone once I heard the door opening and closing, but his last words lingered in my ears. That was a warning, and even though he didn’t fully say it, I knew that he was warning me about Elowen.
