Chapter 9

LYALL POV

I had to force myself not to run out of class when the bell went. I even tolerate Melinda fawning over me, finding any excuse to touch my hand, my chest, my stomach. I hate every second of it. When her hand drifts to my belt I damn near shifted and tore her throat out. That irrational reaction to a hot females touch? Yeah, not normal. “Meet me in the forest tonight,” she whispered. “Our usual spot?” “No.” The word left my lips before I had even really registered her question. “Excuse me?” she asked, head jerking back. “No.” I replied. “And why not?” she demanded. “I don’t need a reason,” I told her firmly. “You’re really going to reject me?” she asked incredulously. “Everything I am offering you?” “I’ve sampled,” I said, impatient now. “I’m good.” I didn’t have any patience left, couldn’t stand the sound of her voice for one more second and so I left. Using my speed I was outside the nurses office in a matter of seconds… advantages to the gifts of an Alpha. Rafe and Ralph were there waiting, neither of them looked happy. “What?” I demanded. “She isn’t here,” Ralph said. “Nurse hasn’t seen her since this morning.” Rafe added. “Yo boss!” Silas, one of my enforcers strolled over, holding some sort of mangled metal contraption. “Wasn’t your little pet using this?” “She’s not a pet,” Ralph and Rafe snapped, causing Silas to raise his hands in surrender. But I couldn’t speak, I was just staring at the broken wheelchair in front of him. It was wrecked What the hell could have caused this? f**k, had she been hit by a car? Inhaling deeply I couldn’t scent any of her blood on it, but it wasn’t entirely comforting. “What. Happened?” “Um… hi?” a tentative voice practically whispered from beside me. I glanced down to see a girl with bright red hair and small build looking at the floor. It was Rini’s one and only friend. “Oh, she speaks,” Silas said with a charming grin. “Hello there sweet Suzie, have you finally decided to acknowledge me?” Wait, Silas knew Suzie. Silas was interested in Suzie? Suzie ignored his playful question and forced her caramel gaze to my face. “Melinda crushed her wheelchair after Rini punched her. She told me she was going to rest up at the nurse’s station but I think she may have just gone home instead.” “f*****g i***t!” I snapped. “Whoa man, don’t shoot the messenger,” Silas said, actually daring to take a step in front of Suzie. Jesus Christ, first Melinda and then Silas? I had to get my house in order and ensure I was respected as an Alpha should be. “He meant Rini,” Ralph said at the same time I snarled. “Move!” Silas had balls, I would give him that, he hesitated for a full two seconds before finally stepping back so he was right next to Suzie…. Who was now shaking. “Stop quivering,” I snarled. “I want to know why she would walk miles home on damaged feet?” Suzie took a gulping breath and then met my eyes, a quiet strength filling her aura and gaze. “Maybe because you’ve made it clear how insignificant she is in a way that she’s never learned how to ask for help? Maybe because Melinda tells her constantly how much better life would be if she killed herself? And maybe because you have never given her that first sign that she could trust you with her vulnerability.” Ralph and Rafe let out humourless laughs whilst I felt like the little mouse had slapped me. “You know I’ve hurt people for doing and saying less to me,” I said, my voice soft. Suzie to her credit, didn’t break eye contact even if I could hear her heart was beating dangerously hard. “You’re not going to hurt me.” “Oh?” I sneered. “Why is that?” “Because I’m all Rini has and if you hurt me, she will try to be noble and cut herself off from me for my own protection…. Not even you’re so cruel as to leave her truly alone in this world.” The female had no idea how cruel I could be, but she was also correct. It didn’t sit well with me that Rini only had one person in her life and that the three of us were partially responsible for that. I wasn’t even going to touch on how her lack of trust in us made me feel. “Well have you called her to check?” Rafe asked, moving up closer to my side. Suzie looked at him like he’d just asked her to perform an interpretive dance. “She doesn’t have a phone.” “Of course she does,” Ralph countered, but even he didn’t sound certain. “Rini’s belongings are your hand me downs and donations to the homeless,” Suzie said with quiet damnation. Fuck. “No transport, no communication,” Rafe muttered. FUCK! Without another word I turned on my heel and took off. I was going to find that damn girl and after I stopped myself from ringing her neck I would get her a damn phone and impress upon her the importance of packs sticking together. …. Except she wasn’t really pack, was she? It didn’t matter. She was living in their house, she was their responsibility and if my aunt and uncle had given up on caring for her then it would be up to ME to take over. * 5 minutes later we were driving towards home. Rafe and Ralph in the car with me, whilst Silas and Suzie followed in Silas’s car, the latter making her displeasure in sharing a confined space with Silas clear on her face. As clear as Silas’s delight in having uninterrupted time with the little mouse. “What if something happened to her?” Rafe asked. “Nothing has,” I said shortly. “She’s basically defenseless though.” “She will be fine.” “With her feet the way they are, she’s going to smell like prime rib to any predator.” Ralph then “Stop thinking about it,” I commanded. “It will be on us if she’s dead,” they said together. “Shut the f**k up!” I screamed. “Not another f*****g word.” I injected the power of my Alpha voice so they were forced to obey, beyond furious in their silence. “She is fine,” I said once I was calm. I couldn’t accept any other option. We continued on for another 5 minutes in silence when something caught my eye. Something sprawled on the road. I skidded to a halt and nearly yanked the door off it’s hinges in my haste, the twins barely a breath behind me.
