I DONT WANT TO BE THE FIRST WOMAN Throughout history, there have been records of people who have achieved incredible feats. The first person to walk on the moon, the first person to reach the top of mount Everest and then, there was the first woman, the first woman to reach the top of Mount Everest, the first woman to fly an aeroplane amongst others. Being the first woman to achieve something has been a major benchmark for success, which is awarded because of the multiple hurdles society and nature has placed on us. Recently, in the name of empowering the female gender, certain scholarships, awards and positions have been reserved for women, eliminating half of the competition. A bill was presented to the house of representatives, presenting the idea to reserve a certain number of seats for women alone, due to the embarrassingly low number of women currently in the house of assembly, which will in fact increase the number of women in positions of power, not because they have better gravitas or have more votes than men, but because there was no way for them to lose. Women are given an advantage, which encourages us to work to be better than other women, not other people. Arguably, biologically speaking, women are less equipped for certain activities, especially in an area like sports, but because attaining victory is harder, it doesn’t mean its impossible. The first person can be either s*x, but the first woman is always going to be a woman. Winning when the odds are rigged in your favour, when there is no way to lose, is not winning… As women, we should strive to be the first people, because being the first woman isn't enough anymore.
