Sophia froze the second we walked into her house, and I instantly became alert that something wasn’t right. I saw movement from across the room and reacted without even thinking. I grabbed Sophia and turned both of us around. The sound of the gun going off filled the room before we were completely turned. The burning sensation in my back let me know she hadn’t been hit. Her scream covered the sound of my grunt. I fell forward, catching myself with the door frame. The sound of movement behind me told me whoever was in her house was headed our way. “Run, Sophia.” I sighed with relief when she didn’t question me and moved her ass.
