CHAPTER 7The dungeon with the cells in was well below the ground floor and even the foundry. It was used mainly for storage of food and wine but had one side corridor that led to the cells. These were only large enough to walk in beside two planks used as a bed. Solid doors containing a slide-across peephole made it possible to view a prisoner inside. Being sent here was an ultimate punishment for erring nuns for in the corridor outside were chains and whips where lashings took place. Dried blood from a recent punishment still splattered on the floor and walls.
