{Adelynn’s POV}
I took a deep breath as the policeman helped me up out of my wheelchair. I would be in one for the next few months, as both of my legs were severely broken. They said that, with the casts, and plenty of rest that my legs, and spine should heal up, with little to no, long term problems. He held me, and carried me up onto the stands to testify. As he sat me down, I whimpered slightly at the pain. My right arm was also in a cast, as well as the fact I was in a back brace.
They swore me in on the Bible, and the trial began. The testimony I had to give was difficult to go through. To recount all the times that they hurt me, and tell them about me trying to leave, and what James said to me before he threw me down the stairs. They got him on first degree child abuse, first degree assault, first degree child endangerment, and of course first degree attempted murder. Millicent was also incarcerated, on first degree child abuse, and first degree child endangerment. James would spend the rest of his life behind bars, and Millicent was taken to an insane asylum after she tried to bite the bailiff, and began talking gibberish.
Finally after a month this trial was complete, and I could finally leave this place behind. My legs were now in braces, instead of full casts, and my arms had healed up. I still had a back brace, and I have been in physical therapy trying to learn to walk again. So far, I cannot walk on my own, or even with crutches. Nurses have had to help me, and taking a few steps is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do as of now. They said that my legs should begin to function properly with time, but I’m not so sure. The hunt for my birth parents has been impossible, the records from the hospital were sealed, and they said until our investigation, and trial was over that they wouldn’t release anything other than my birth certificate, which gave us nothing to go on. However, now that it was all over, Doctor Brigit and I were finally going to the hospital I was born in, and hopefully getting some answers. The car ride there was quiet, and I couldn’t stop fidgeting with my hands.
“What if they don’t have anything Bridget?” I asked, my heart pounding in my ears.
She sighed, keeping her eyes on the road. “Addie, I’m sure they have something, some kind of clue. We’ll just have to figure it out as we go.”
I nodded, knowing that her answer would be what it has been this whole month. Once we reached the hospital she got my wheelchair out of the back, and helped me into it. We made our way into the hospital and were sent up to the records department. Once there, we were sent into an office and told to wait there.
After about an hour a woman came in with a tablet and smiled at us. “Well ladies, I’m happy to say that with some digging, we were able to compare your blood, with the blood of the mothers that were here when you were born, and we do have a potential match. We have contacted the woman, and her husband who have agreed to a blood test. Afterwards, if the test comes back that you are indeed their child, they would love to meet you.”
“Y-You may have found them already?” I sighed a breath of relief. “Please do the blood test now, this was a long drive for us, and I couldn’t possibly ask Bridget to do it again!” I rolled up my sleeve.
She laughed slightly. “Alright, but we can’t do this in my office. We have some private rooms on this floor, I’ll take you to one now, and I will call the couple and let them know you’re here to do the dna test.” She said, leading us out of her office, and down multiple corridors until we reached a large, private hospital room. “I’ll come back in when we get the results.” She said, leaving, as a nurse came in and drew my blood.
Once the blood test was done, I turned to Bridget. “Hey, I hate to bother you anymore..” I started.
“Please! You’re amazing, I’m so glad that you’ve allowed me to be here and help you through this. What do you need?” She said, her voice as soft, and kind as always.
“Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m starving! I’ve got some cash in my wallet, could you go grab us some food?” I asked, pulling out some cash, and handing it to her. I had gotten some money when I won my trial, luckily. Otherwise I would have run out of money very quickly. I used the majority to pay off some of my medical bills, the rest I have in a savings, and some that I keep for essentials.
“Keep your cash, I’ll go get us some burgers, be back soon!” She said, smiling at me, and heading out of the room. She closed the door behind her and I sighed, feeling lost in this massive room.
I turned my wheelchair towards the window, and carefully rolled towards it. I looked outside, the city here was loud, and busy, it felt so different than the small town I was used to. I could see my reflection in the window. My skin was pale, and my forest green eyes sparkled in the fluorescent lights. My chocolate brown hair was pulled back into a loose braid that went all the way down to my butt. My eyes were large, as were my lips, I’ve always been told I have pretty, pouty lips, and my face was sprinkled with freckles. I had lost some weight since the incident, I hadn’t really been eating much, so I looked kind of sickly. I sighed, thinking, and hoping against hope that this may be it. That I may find a family who loves me. I waited for what felt like forever, before I heard the door knob click as it opened.
