The dinner party a few nights ago was a prime example of this, Elizabeth was polite and a bit reserved, if not indifferent with the people she came into contact with. She was the person at the party that was talked to, but not talked about later. Too much interest in her made her visibly nervous, probably because she was afraid of what conclusions were presumably being drawn about her, or possibly because she had learned not to consider attention to be flattering or harmless in intent.
