Archibald’s declaration forced my eyes to snap towards him, his words lingering in the air like an unexpected mist, catching me off guard and leaving me momentarily flustered by the weight of his statement.
“Why?” The question sprung from my lips before I could contain it. “Why be so generous?” I asked, seeking to understand the motives behind his sudden change in stance.
The gesture seemed too generous and out of character, given his usual demeanor. And felt incomplete, like there was an unspoken condition attached to it. A bargain perhaps, something that needed to be fulfilled in exchange for this gesture. Or maybe there was something that had already been done.
He regarded me with a calculating gaze, as if weighing the words before he spoke. "You wanted that, didn't you?"
