Chapter 1

Jessica POV It has been 4 months since graduation, Miranda and I have finally moved into our new apartment in Durham. It was about 10 minutes away from campus. It was in one of these newer apartment units that were built. It was in this beautiful neighborhood to die for. I am excited that we can have this new adventure in North Carolina. I am excited to start my journey at med school and see how this can challenge me. After an hour of unpacking all of my clothes, I decided that I would call Cassidy and see how she is doing. After all, she decided that she wanted something different from us. Originally we were all going to go to the same school after college but there was a different change of paste. She wanted to be somewhat closer to her boyfriend. I don't mind though, we are only 3 hours away. I decided that I wanted to take a break from packing and facetime Cassidy. It has been 2 weeks since I last spoke to her because her family, her boyfriend, and herself went on a family vacation to Europe and weren't able to talk as often. There was a text here and there but not as much as we could. So I decided to facetime her because I truly miss her.  After a few rings, She finally picks up. "Hey girlie," she replies with her big smile. Her smiles are one of those smiles that are contagious. Anytime you are having a shitty day, and you see that smile of hers, man your heart will melt, you can just forget about that shitty, f****d up day that you had. I know when that incident happened, her smile helped me get through. "Hey," I replied. I went and laid right onto my bed. "How's Virginia treating you?" "Well, it's going pretty well. Not as well as I want it to be," she says. You can tell that she is upset.  "Why is that?" I asked out of concern. I know that she doesn't have a hard time making new friends. She just has that personality where she can walk into the room and you want to gravitate to. She has the biggest heart that you can ask for, she is sweet, loving, and just relatable.  "Oh it's just silly, I guess I miss you and Cassidy so much." she started to tear up. "Oh, Miranda. What's going on? I have never seen you so sad." I asked. I was starting to get concerned. I have never seen her so sad before. To be honest I have never seen her cry before. "She started to sniffle, I am sorry. I'm such a hot mess. James and I got into a fight and I am having a hard time adapting to my new surroundings." She said while starting to cry even harder. I couldn't help but feel heartbroken for her. What else can I do? I couldn't hug her because we were all going to different schools, in different states. I did beg her to come down with us. I never really liked James. He always treated her like s**t and I don’t like that. His behavior always reminded me of what happened to me during my freshman year.  "Oh Miranda," I said to her, "what can I do to help because you are one of my best friends. Someone who I treasure so much because she would do anything for me and the same for her as me. "You are already doing for me," she says with a soft smile while sniffling. Then she abruptly changed the subject, "how is North Carolina treating you?" we started to talk about everything that was going on with me. Nothing was exciting though. I just got here a couple of days ago and all Cassidy and I have been doing were unpacking all of our things. I didn't realize how many things we both shared. Once Miranda and I got off the phone with each other, I heard Cassidy come back in from her errand run. I went to go find her. "Hey," I said to her. "Hey," she replied. “What are you up to?” she asks while she started to put her groceries away.   “Nothing really, I just got off the phone with Miranda.” “Oh, how was that?” “She has been a little off, I guess. She says that she and James got into a huge argument about how she feels been feeling and that she felt lonely.” Cassidy turns around to look at me. She gave me a small smile. “I couldn't imagine how she was feeling. I miss having her around. Just the three of us.”  “Yeah, I miss having them us around. You know what?” I said while Cassidy gives me a quizzical look, with one eyebrow up.  “What?” “We should find a weekend where we should have a getaway, just the three of us.” “Wow, already a vacation. We haven't even started school yet and you already want a vacation,” she says while laughing. I went and rolled my eyes at her. That permitted her to laugh even more. I couldn't help but laugh with her. Once she stops her laughing she agrees with us. Then I proceeded to text Miranda to find a day where we can all meet up for a weekend. After our exchange, I proceeded to help Cassidy to put the food away and proceeded to start unpacking our stuff.  Monday Morning came around and I was looking forward to starting school. I woke up bright and early because I opted to have early classes. I got myself ready, put some light makeup, and but my hair up in an updo. I was going for a minimal look but at the same time a professional look. Once I was ready I went into Cassidy and my kitchen to start on coffee and eating my bagel while scrolling through social media. That's when Cassidy walks into the kitchen. “Why did I agree to have early classes?” “Because this is a new age plus we have all the time to study for classes and work in the afternoon.” “Ugggh,” she screams out loud. “Why do you have to be so right?” while she walks over to pour herself a cup of coffee. We sat there in silence for a few more minutes when she decided to speak up once again after I kept checking my watch. “I guess we can head out.” I gave her a gentle smile and nodded. I got up to grab my things and as she did for herself.  We decided that we would carpool today because we are still learning the area.  Once we were parked, got out of the car and proceed to lock the door. She told me that she would meet me in at our first class but she had to go back to the car to grab her stuff the car. I gave her a nod and walked to class. Not paying attention, that's when I ran into this guy who was standing right in front of me. Making me spill his coffee all over him. “I am so sorr-.” he cuts me off before I can continue my apology.  He goes on to say “Are you f*****g serious? How f*****g dumb are you?” he says fuming. He was trying to wipe himself off. I didn't know what to say. That made me fuming. I was beyond angry.  “Well I didn’t mean to run into you and I am trying to apologize to you.” “Yeah, f*****g right. I know that you did that s**t on purpose.” “First of all, no I didn't do this on purpose. Secondly, I don't know who you are or who your daddy is or what f**k daddy issues you have with him. Lastly, you don't need to be so rude.” “I didn't have to if you apologize in the first place.” I was in shock. He might be a handsome guy but he had some shitty attitude that was not needed.  If you get that stick out your ass and listen then you will know that's what I am trying to do.” “You know what I don't have time for this petty argument. From now on, stay away from me,” he says walking away. I gave him this glare. Now I was fuming. I was beyond pissed now. That's when Miranda joins me by my side. “What was all that about?” “I have no idea,” I said while trying to calm myself down. “Let us go to class.” This was a rough start to something that was supposed to be a new start for myself.
