Ryker's POV
"What the hell, dude?" Steven asks, pushing me a few steps back.
Before I can answer, Dex shoves me to the back of my mind as my eyes change to pitch black. Dex fights to get past Steven and Micah. "Mate!"
Steven's jaw drops, and he and Micah fight to hold me back.
"Ok, well, class is going to start soon. I'll see you around." one girl says to my Mate. My Mate.
"Ok, have a good day." my mate waves.
"You too." A boy leans down and kisses her on her lips.
"MINE," Dex growls as Steven and Micah fight to hold me back more.
"Woah, dude. Calm down." Steven says.
"She's mine!" Dex growls.
"Dex. Dex. Dex, listen to me. You need to calm down. You are surrounded by humans that could get hurt." Steven says.
"I don't care," Dex growls. I want to kill that boy.
"But you care about your Mate? She is human. You don't want to start this off but hurting anyone she cares about or worse. Hurting her." Steven rationalizes.
"I don't want to hurt, mate." Dex whimpers.
"That's right, I know you don't," Steven nods.
"But I don't want some other guy touching what is mine," Dex growls, getting angry again, so mad that our eyes change to red now. I can feel my blood boiling.
"That is a problem we can solve. But we can't do that if you do something to hurt your Mate." Steven says.
"I don't want to hurt Mate. I want to protect Mate." Dex says.
"That's right, I know. So right now, you need to protect Mate by giving control back to Ryker." Steven says, looking at me and nodding.
Dex slowly gives me back control. Soon my eyes change back to their usual emerald green. "Better?" Steven asks, slowly letting go of me.
"Better." I nod, crossing my arms.
"Ok, focus on me." Steven puts his hand in front of my face and snaps. I start glaring at him. "Go to class. I'm going to try to find out more about her." Steven says, looking at me and nodding.
"Find out her schedule. I want to be in all of her classes." I growl.
"I'll see what I can do." Steven nods.
"I want it done now. And find out about the boy too. I'm going to kill him." I command.
"Way to stay calm, Alpha." Steven comments.
~~~~~~
Later that day...
Steven said that this was her class. Let's hope he is right. Dex has been bothering me all day. I wish I had known I was meeting my Mate today... I would have showered after my run or worn a suit instead of my normal leather jacket and black jeans.
My eyes land on the prettiest girl with long blonde hair pulled to a braid off to the side on her shoulder with the brightest blue eyes.
"mate," Dex sighs in contentment as I take in my new favorite sight. She is gorgeous. She is the prettiest girl I've ever seen, even in torn-up high-waisted jeans and a crop top with light makeup.
I walk over to the chair next to her, and thankfully it's empty. "Is anyone sitting here?" I ask. She looks up from her phone.
"No, go right ahead. Help yourself." she looks up and smiles at me.
"Thanks," I say, taking a seat next to her. She goes back to texting, and I glance around the classroom.
"What class is this?" I ask. I never really looked at what class this was. This is just the only class that Steven could get me in that still has seats available.
"Calc 306." My mate answers. She has a beautiful voice.
"Great, I'm in the right room." I nod so I don't look like an i***t. "So seems like you and I will be seeing a lot of each other these next few months."
"Seems so. What's your name?" she asks.
"Ryker, but you can call me anytime." I wink at her.
"Wow, we got a player on our hands." she laughs.
"Not really. Just bad at making jokes." I say. I don't want her to think I'm some player like I flirt with all the girls.
"Well, you must not be that bad because you made me laugh." she smiles at me. "I'm Alyssa, by the way." she introduces herself.
"Mate! Mate is talking to us!" Dex is running circles in my head
"Can you stop jumping around like that? You're distracting me, and I will look like an i***t in front of Alyssa. Alyssa. Her name is Alyssa- it's perfect." I mind linking him.
"It's nice to meet you, Alyssa. You have a beautiful name." I tell her honestly.
"Thanks. I had it all my life." She jokes. She looks away from me towards the front of the class. "Is that the professor? He looks ancient. I hope he still puts his powerpoints online." Alyssa says, sounding worried.
"It's always the dinosaurs that refuse to put their notes online for us to study," I comment. I never really study, but she seems like she does because she is worried about the PowerPoint online.
Alyssa's face lights up for a second. "Right?! I need all the help I can get." I nod. She turns back to the front of the room. "Op- looks like he is about to start," she says, sitting up a little bit more in her seat and picking up a pen. That's cute; she seems so excited to learn.
"Great, let's get this over with." I sigh, turning to face the front of the classroom. I'd much rather continue to talk to her.
Class ended waayyy too soon for my liking. I wanted to continue to sit there to be near my Mate Alyssa. But class is over, and I'm determined to spend as much time with her as I can. I don't want her to think I'm creepy or anything.
I continue to make small talk about the class with her as we walk down the hall. "It's ridiculous that he banned laptops from his class," I say.
"I guess we can assume he won't ever upload anything online," Alyssa says.
"At least that means we don't have anything to turn in online, just handing things in in-class in person." I try to look at the bright side.
"Yeah, that is good. I'm not good with the midnight deadlines," she says as we round a corner to a new hall. Suddenly her face falls, and she stops walking.
"You i***t! You made Mate sad. Fix it." Dex growls in my head.
"What's wrong? Why are you sad?" I ask, tracking her line of sight to see what she is looking at. The boy who kissed her earlier has his tongue down another girl's throat.
"Nothing. It's fine." she sighs, looking at the ground.
"Who is that?" I ask.
She takes a deep breath. "My boyfriend." she sighs. That's what I thought.
"I hate that guy. He is keeping Mate from us, and he is making her sad. Kill him." Dex growls.
"The guy making out with that girl is your boyfriend? No way." I deny.
"Yeah, he is." Alyssa nods sadly.
"I'm going to kick his ass for you," I say. I just really want to kick his ass.
"No, no. It's ok." Alyssa says.
"He is kissing another girl. He is cheating. Doesn't that make you mad? I don't mind giving him a piece of my mind for you." I offer.
"No, it's fine, honestly," Alyssa says sadly.
"He shouldn't treat you like that. Nobody should treat you like that." I tell her.
"It's fine. Honestly." Alyssa says.
"You shouldn't let someone walk all over you. Go, say something. Go end it with him." I encourage her.
"Yes! Then Mate can be with us!" Dex cheers.
"No, I'm not going to do that. I am going to go talk to him, though." Alyssa says.
"Good, give him a piece of your mind. I'm right here for backup." I encourage her.
Alyssa hesitantly walks up to her dumb boyfriend and clears her throat. I walk up too, staying a few steps away just in case he gets mad. He separates from the girl he is making out with.
"Oh, you're out of class," he says, looking at her like he wasn't just caught cheating. I mean, he is still holding onto the other girl.
"I am." Alyssa nods. Come on, tell him off. Break up with him.
"Great. I was getting bored," he says, letting go of the other girl.
"That's why you cheated on your girlfriend." I scoff.
"Who are you?" he asks, looking at me and crossing his arms—dumb human.
"A friend from my class. Who is this?" Alyssa says.
"A friend from my class," he says.
"Now that we all know each other, can we go home?" Alyssa asks.
Wait, what? "You're not actually going home with him, are you?!" I nearly yell. How could she want to go home with him after seeing him cheating?
"Yeah, he's my ride." she nods.
"I can give you a ride. Anywhere you want to go you don't have to go with him. I'll take you wherever you want to go." I offer.
"I want to go to his house. It's a nice offer, though. Thanks." she smiles at me.
"I suggest you mind your business, dude," he says, putting his arm around my Mate's shoulders. I'm going to kick his ass.
"Luke be nice," Alyssa says.
"Oh, you're leaving? But I was having fun." the other girl says, grabbing onto Luke.
"You can come with us," Luke says to the other girl. I watch as Alyssa looks at the ground, looking very sad.
"I'd like that very much." The girl flirts with Luke as Alyssa rolls her eyes.
"Get in the car, girls," Luke says as he leads them both out of the building.
"Don't let her leave with that ass hat," Dex growls.
"Stop. Stop. Please stop." I say to Alyssa.
"What is it?" Alyssa asks, turning around to look at me.
"Don't go with him. Don't do this." I beg my Mate. I want her to stay here with me. But I don't want her going with him.
"I know what you think you saw. And it's nice you care, and I hope we can still be friendly in class after I say this, but- It's none of your business," she says coldly.
"Please. I saw that you were hurt by him kissing her." I say, pointing to Luke.
"I'll see you in class," Alyssa says, turning and following after Luke and the other girl.
"Go get Mate. We can't let her get hurt by him." Dex growls.
"She is human. She doesn't understand." I mindlink him as I pull at my hair. This is killing me. Mate chose a guy that cheated on her right in front of her over me. I feel so rejected.
It's ok; she is a human. We just have to be patient. We have to let her choose us. I'm just going to have to make her see that she deserves more. Then show her we are more.
"But I want her now," Dex complains.
"f**k this. I want her too." I huff, curling my hands into fists as I walk out of the building into the parking lot.
Steven walks up to me. "Hey dude, what are you looking at? Oh, I see. Your girl is getting in that dude's car." Steven says as we watch Alyssa and the other girl get into Luke's car.
"I'm not letting her leave with him. She is coming with us." I growl.
"You can't do that," Steven says, running in front of me.
"Oh yeah, watch me," I growl, pulling his hands off me.
"If you kidnap her, she will hate you and be scared," Steven says.
Fuck. "Dammit, you're right. I don't want her to be afraid of me." I admit looking at the ground. "I could follow her home, though, and learn more about her." I smile, looking up at their car pulling out of the parking lot.
"No, you can't. You have a meeting with the warriors in an hour." Steven reminds me.
"f**k I hate this," I growl.
"I know it's going to get better, though. Just be patient." Steven says, trying to calm me down.
"Why couldn't you get me in all her classes?" I yell at him.
"They were all full except that one hard math class." He says.
"Calculus, yeah. Good thing I already passed that class so I can help her study." I shrug.
"Help her study? If I remember correctly, you barely passed that class with a C." Steven comments.
"C's get degrees." I shrug.
Alyssa's POV
"Mommy!" Callum charges at me right as Luke opens the front door to his house. Luke shows the girl upstairs to his bedroom.
I kneel to hug him. "Oh, mommy missed you, baby." I hug him. I pick him up. "Did you have fun today?" I ask
"Yeah. Guess what we did!" Callum nods.
"What?" I ask, fixing his shirt that is bunched up in my arms.
"I played doctor with the old people!" he says happily.
"You what?" I ask.
Gigi walks into the room holding Aiden. "I don't work today, so I took the boys with me to the nursing home. I had to pick up my paycheck, and the boys were great helpers." Gigi explains.
"Ohhh," I nod
"Yeah. They had a lot of fun, and the nursing home residents loved them, as always. The boys got to play doctor with some of the patients; they prescribed everyone candy isn't that right, Aiden?" she says.
"I got to use the stetenfckope!" he says.
"Stethoscope," I guess at what he is saying.
"Yeah! But I think it was broken because I didn't see any stars in the sky." Aiden says,
I can't help but laugh. He thinks it's a telescope. "Remember Aid. I told you that a stethoscope lets you hear people's heartbeats. Telescopes let you look at the stars.... you know when it's nighttime, and we are outside, not daylight, and at a nurses station." Gigi says.
"Oh yeah." Aiden nods.
"I hope they weren't too much trouble," I ask.
"No, not at all. I love the boys." Gigi says.
Luke walks into the room holding the hands of Bryson and Dylan, who look very tired. "Mommy, I'm a doctor!" Dylan says.
"I heard. Did you boys have fun today?" I ask.
"Yeah. Grandma told me that I'm adorable." Bryson says.
"He is a freaking Houdini, is that he is. Bryson is an escape artist in the making." Luke sighs.
"They are convinced that all old ladies' are named grandma," Gigi says, shaking her head.
"What did you do, Bryson?" I ask, putting my free hand on my hip.
"Nothing," he denies.
"Not true. When I told you it was time to go and to go to your mommy, what did you do instead?" Luke argues with him.
"Nothing," Bryson says.
"That's not true. He tried to get a cookie." Luke says, looking at Bryson with a pointed look.
"Dylan. I told you not to tell." Bryson yells at Dylan.
"He climbs over the kitchen gate somehow and up on the counter," Luke explains.
"Bryson! You know not to do that. You could have gotten hurt." I scold him.
"Sorry, mommy," Bryson says, looking at me with his puppy dog eyes.
"It's ok. Just don't do it again. Ok babies. Are you ready to go?" I ask.
"Yeah!" Aiden says.
"Yes, Mommy." Callum nods, putting his head on my shoulder.
"Ok." Bryson shrugs.
"Where are we going?" Dylan asks.
"Home. Then we can have a snack and play some more." I explain to the little space cadet.
"Ohh, ok," Dylan nods.
"Ok. Say thank you and bye to GiGi babies." I tell them, and they all wave.
"Bye, Gigi," they all say.
"Bye, boys!" she waves at them.
"Boys, grab mine or your mommy's hands. We can't have one of you running out into traffic," Luke instructs as we hold their hands, leading them all out of the house.
We walk them across the yard towards my house next door. "Mommy, I'm tired. Can you carry me?" Callum complains.
"It's my turn for mommy to carry me," Dylan argues.
"Nah, ah! She carried you yesterday!" Bryson argues.
"Boys, boys. We are 15 feet from the front door. I think you can make it another 15 feet." I encourage them.
"No, I can't. It's so far." Aiden says dramatically.
"It's next door. Look, you can see GiGi watering her flowers right there." Luke says. "Look, she heard me." Luke waves to his mom, and she waves back.
"He is right. We've been walking for 30 seconds." I tell them.
"It feels like forever," Aiden complains, dramatically flopping on the ground.
"Oh, are you tired?" I ask.
"Uh-huh," he nods.
"Oh, I guess that means you boys need to take a nap instead of having more playtime," I say.
"No! We aren't tired," Dylan says.
"No, mommy, I don't want to take a nap," Callum says.
"Really?" I ask. "I think I need to see some proof that you don't need to take a nap. How about we race you to the front door? If we win, the babies have to take a nap. If the babies win, you get to play more." I offer.
"Yeah!!" Aiden says, hopping up and down.
"Go!" Dylan yells.
All the little boys take off running as Luke grabs my hand, interlacing our fingers as we jog behind him. "Well, that was easy." Luke laughs.
"That's the only way they do anything. If they think it's a competition." I shrug.
A little while later, they're all playing in the living room as I get their snacks ready.
"Roar!" Luke says, stomping around chasing the boys.
"AHHHH!!" Dylan screams, running into the room.
"The floor is lava, Dylan! Save yourself!" Bryson yells.
"He's a T-Rex!" Callum says, running towards me.
"ROAR! Better not let me catch you." Luke says.
"No!" Bryson yells.
"Ok, boys! Snack time!" I call out.
"Better hurry or I'm going to eat all the snacks." Luke taunts them.
Everyone comes running into the kitchen, and the boys take their seats at the table. And Luke helps me feed them all.
"Thanks for helping me with them and giving me a ride to and from school," I tell him.
"No problem. Thanks for having my back with that guy earlier." Luke says, crossing his arms and getting a little bit angry again.
"It's ok. No problem." I shrug.
"I don't like that guy. I don't like him hanging around you." Luke says.
"I don't say anything about the girls you mess around with, so don't say anything about some guy from my class." I defend him.
"Why are you defending him?" Luke asks, rolling his eyes.
"I don't know. He was nice to me." I shrug, crossing my arms. "And you know just as well as I do what it looks like when you are with other girls out in the open."
"I know." Luke sighs, looking at the ground. "Just remember that you're always the one I come home to at the end of the day," Luke says, moving closer to me, putting my hands on my hips, and smirking at me.
"I know." I sigh, looking down at the ground.
"Speaking of, I have a girl in my bed waiting for me. See you later." Luke says, letting go of my waist. "Love you." he kissed the top of my head and then leaves me to go be with the other girl.... yeah, this is him coming home to me at the end of the day. It sure doesn't feel that way sometimes.
Ryker's POV
I storm into the packhouse and am immediately stopped by my mom. "Hey, how was school?' she asks, smiling at me. I can't deal with this right now. I'm too pissed. "Ry?" she asks.
"He found his mate," Steven answers as I pace the floor.
"Oh, that's great!" Mom says, smiling at me. I feel her studying me for a moment as I continue to pace. "Wait, why is he mad?" Mom asks Steven, pointing to me. "Did she reject him? My poor baby." Mom says sadly.
"No, but it's almost that bad," Steven says.
"What is it?" Mom asks me.
"She is human. She doesn't know that she is his Mate." Steven explains.
"That's not too bad. Just give it a little bit of time." Mom encourages me.
"And she has a boyfriend," Steven adds, making my blood boil again.
"Well, that's ok. Relationships don't always last with humans. They like to have a lot of relationships before finally settling down." Mom tries to cheer me up.
"It appears the boyfriend is like that. He is cheating on her." Steven explains
"Well, let's hope that it will end soon," Mom says happily.
"According to Ryker, she didn't seem surprised by it. She didn't do anything about it even though he said she seemed sad. I don't know if she just wouldn't do anything about it or what." Steven explains.
"Oh, that's complicated. That's not good. Why would she just accept that?" Mom asks, looking at me.
"I don't know, but it pissed Ryker off," Steven says, pointing at me.
"I bet," Mom says.
"I barely convinced him to come home instead of following her home. I did sign him up for one of her classes." Steven says.
"That's a start, at least," Mom says, nodding at me happily.
"Better than nothing." Steven nods.
"It's not enough. I get to see her for like 3 hours a week. It's not enough." I growl.
"Ok. I got this, Steven." Mom says. Steven nods and walks away.
"Hey..." Mom says softly, walking up to me carefully.
"What do you want?" I growl.
"Want to talk about it?" Mom asks.
'"No, I don't want to sit here and talk about my feelings like some bitch." I growl, pulling at my hair.
"Ryker!" Mom yells at me.
"WHAT!" I yell.
"You cannot talk to me like that." Mom scolds me.
"I'm the Alpha. I can say and do whatever I want!" I argue.
"That might be true, but I'm still your mother, and I will ground your ass so fast- Try explaining that to the pack. 'Sorry, Alpha can't help you right now. He is grounded and can't leave his room'" My mom taunts me using air quotes. I'm not in the mood for this.
"I'm 23, mom, "I growl.
"And I'm 45. What's that got to do with anything. You will always be my son, and I'll always be your mom." Mom argues.
"Ugh. Fine. Sorry." I huff.
"It's ok. I know that you weren't mad at me." Mom says, patting my shoulder.
"You're right; I'm not." I nod
"I know." Mom sighs.
"I don't get it, Mom. I'm so confused. I want her to be mine. I want her to break up with him and be with me. But the look on her face when she saw him kissing another girl broke my heart. I want her to be happy, and I don't like seeing her sad." I explain.
"Just be patient. It's all going to be ok. Just give it some time." Mom says, hugging me from the side.
"I know you're right," I sigh.
"I know," Mom says, patting my shoulder again and letting me go. "Want to tell me about her?" she asks.
"Unfortunately, I don't know much about her. But I know that she is so pretty and nice and caring and funny and ... Great. She's great." I smile just thinking about her. "And she has a boyfriend."
"We can fix that, though," Mom says.
"But she is great. If I had her, I'd never let her go; what if he feels the same way? What do I do then?" I ask.
"From what I heard, it doesn't sound like he feels the same way about her if he is messing around with other girls," Mom says.
"I hope you're right," I sigh.
"I know I'm right," Mom says.
Let's hope so.
~~~~~
The Next Day...
I got up early, hoping that she would be at school early again today. I would love more time with my Mate, Alyssa. I walk into the hallway that I first saw her in yesterday. Micah and Steven round the corner behind me, bumping into me as I stop in my tracks. She is here. I'm so happy. I feel like I can breathe again, knowing she is ok.
I look around her to see her dumb boyfriend Luke standing next to her holding her hand, and two other people, one girl and one guy, standing near them.
I focus on them. I want to know what my Mate is doing and talking about. I want to know what is going on with her in her boyfriend. I hope she broke up with him, and he is holding her hand against her will so I can go beat him up.
"No, no, I swear." the other girl that's not my mate laughs.
"No way," my Mate laughs.
"Seriously, milk came right out of his nose," the other girls say.
"I told you not to tell anyone that!" Luke says angrily.
"I'm not telling just anyone. I'm telling my best friend; she is always excluded when I say I'm not telling anyone. It's not my fault that my best friend is your girlfriend. Or that Leo is also standing here." the other girl says. So I guess the other guy's name is Leo and this random girl is Alyssa's best friend. Ok, that's good to know.
"That was a great story." the guy, I guess is Leo laughs.
"I can't believe I never knew this!" Alyssa says happily, turning to look at Luke.
"I purposefully never told you. It's embarrassing." Luke says, smiling at MY Mate.
"I can't believe that you believed me when I told you that if you have milk in your mouth and roll down a hill, you can make a milkshake in your mouth." the other girl laughs.
"I was eight years old." Luke shrugs. "And I like milkshakes," he says, making me laugh.
"Ryker, you have to stay calm and in control," Steven says.
"I am in control," I say.
"Hey, I know that dude," Micah says, pointing towards my Mate.
"You're growling a lot," Steven says.
"The boyfriend?" I ask Micah.
"No, the other one with them. I've had a few classes with him; his name is Leo." Micah says. So I was right.
"He looks like he is friends with her. Maybe he can tell you something about your girl, or maybe the boyfriend. He might know of a way to drive a wedge between them." Steven suggests.
"It's worth a shot, right?" Micah says.
"Yeah." I agree happily. Anything to get my Mate away from her 'boyfriend'.
"Hey, Leo! Come over here!" Micah calls out.
The guy starts walking over to us, but I stay focused on my Mate. "Well, I have to get to class," Alyssa says.
"Me too." The other girl says.
"See you guys later," Alyssa says.
"Later, guys," Luke says, then kisses my Mate's lips. I'm going to kill him.
"Ew. Come on, Lyssie, let's go." the other girl says, grabbing my Mate's hand and pulling her away from Luke. Good.
"Hey, Micah. What's up?" The Leo guy asks, walking over to us.
"Nothing much. What's up with you?" Micah waves.
"You know, same old same old." Leo shrugs.
"Cool. So you know that girl?" Micah asks, nodding towards where my Mate just was.
"Kaylin? Yeah, what's up? Want me to introduce you?" Leo asks.
"No, Alyssa." I correct him.
"Yeah, I know, Alyssa. Why? Don't tell me you like her." he sighs.
"Just tell me about her. What does she like, what does she not like?" I ask. I need to know more about her.
"Ummm, well, she likes her friends and cinnamon rolls. She hates things that waste her time, which is understandable; she is swamped." Leo says vaguely.
"What about her and that guy?" Steven asks.
"Luke? Yeah, they're together. Have been for a while." Leo says.
"How long is a while?" Steven asks before I get the chance.
"A week, a month, two months?" I ask.
"Umm, I don't know exactly. Like 10.... years, I think." Leo shrugs.
My mouth falls open from the shock. "10 years? They have been together for ten years?!" I asked to make sure I heard right.
"Ryker," Steven says, trying to get my attention.
"Yeah, they started dating officially in middle school or something. Their moms were best friends, and they grew up together. They were best friends and started dating when they were kids. If one of you likes her, I suggest you move on and find someone else. Those two are attached at the hips. I think they are going to last forever." Leo says, and my heart sinks. I need my Mate.
