Alyssa's POV
"Ok, sweetie, you got everything you need for your first day?" Gigi asks Kaylin.
"Mom, I'm 21 and going to start a new semester in a college I've been going to for a year already. Not about to start my first day of kindergarten." Kaylin says sarcastically, rolling her eyes.
"I know. I know. Is just my job to worry." Gigi sighs. I love Gigi; she is so funny. I see why she and my Mom were best friends.
"I've got to go, or I'm going to be late. I'll see you later." Kaylin says, throwing her bag over her shoulder.
"Not yet, young lady. Not before you give your Mom a hug and kiss goodbye." Gigi scolds her.
"Ugh, mom." Kaylin huffs. Kaylin hugs her Mom. "Bye, mom, love you," she says, then lets her go. Kaylin looks at me.
"I love you too, sweetie," Gigi says back.
"You going with me? Or are you waiting for Luke?" Kaylin asks.
"Waiting for Luke," I answer.
"Ugh, I don't get why you put up with him. My brother is an i***t. Whatever. I'll see you later." Kaylin says, then walks out of the house.
I look at Gigi, "I really appreciate you doing this." I tell her again.
"Oh, anything for you, sweetie. I hope you have a great day and keep my son in line." Gigi says.
"Oh, I'll try, but I'm not making any promises." I laugh as Luke walks into the room.
"You two better get going, or you're going to be late. Now come hug your mother goodbye, Luke." Gigi says.
Luke hugs his Mom, then puts his arm around my shoulder and kisses the top of my head. "Alright, let's go."
"I'll be back as soon as I'm done with class," I tell Gigi.
"Not so fast, Alyssa. You get a hug too. You might as well be my daughter. Maybe one day you will be." Gigi says, putting her arms around me in a hug. I hug her too, but I can't help but notice Luke rolling his eyes at his Mom's comment about us being married one day. He takes his arms from around my shoulder and walks out of the house as I hug his Mom.
"Thanks again," I say to Gigi.
"It's no bother at all. I'm just glad that you all ended up going to the university in town so all my babies could stay nearby." Gigi says.
"I'm glad too. Call me if anything happens." I say.
"Yeah yeah, I know, I know." she brushes me off as I walk to Luke's car.
Soon we are all standing in the hallway of one of the buildings on campus as it fills with people all headed to their classes. It's funny watching the freshman walking around looking lost. I look at Luke, who seems to be entirely uninterested in Kaylin and Leo's conversation.
"So, what's your schedule like this semester?" I ask, putting my hand on Luke's arm.
"You know I have classes the same time you do so that I can give you a ride," Luke says, rolling his eyes.
"No, I meant like- are you taking any classes you are excited about?" I ask.
"Not really; they're just classes." Luke shrugs.
"You know I appreciate all that you and your family do for me. I wouldn't have made it this long if it weren't for you all." I remind him.
"I know." He nods, pulling his phone out of his pocket and texting.
"Thanks."
"You're my girlfriend. It's kind of my job." he shrugs.
"Did I do something that made you angry?" I ask
"No." he shrugs.
"Why are you being so short with me right now?" I ask, getting a little bit frustrated.
"I'm not being short. You know I'm not a morning person." Luke says.
"I know." I sigh.
"Plus, I've told you about my classes multiple times now. You obviously just don't care enough to listen." Luke says.
"That's not true. I care. It's just- I have a lot on my plate, you know that. I don't mean to forget. I'm sorry. I'll try harder. I know it's no excuse. I am sorry." I apologize.
"I know you are. It's ok. I understand you have a lot going on. I get that. I still love you anyway." Luke says, never looking up from his phone.
"I love you too." I sigh, crossing my arms over my chest. How did my life turn out like this?

Meanwhile...
Ryker's POV
"Wake up. Come on, wake up, let's goooooo..." Dex complains, waking me up. Stupid wolf.
"What is it, Dex? My alarm isn't set to go off for another hour. Why are you waking me up?" I huff.
"Get up. I want to start the day." Dex complains.
"Why? It's so early. And you're never excited to start the day. You love to sleep. What's got you so excited?" I ask. My wolf and I are both not morning people.
"I don't know, but I can't sit still," Dex says as he fidgets around in my mind.
"I know I can tell." I roll my eyes.
"Come one, let's go," Dex complains.
"Ughhh, you're so needy today. Would going for a run help you?" I huff.
"YES! I love to run!" Dex agrees
"I know. Maybe it will calm you down some too." I comment.
"Well.... get up, let's go," Dex says excitedly.
"Ugh, today is going to be a long day." I huff, getting out of bed. It's too early for this.
~~~~~~~
"Morning, Mom. What are you all dressed up for?" I asked, walking into the kitchen as she poured herself a cup of coffee.
"Morning, dear. I'm not dressed up." she denies.
"Oh, please. You don't have any meetings today that I know of." I comment.
"Where have you been?" she asks me, changing the subject.
"Out for a run. It's been a while since I could just stretch my paws." I answer.
"Yeah, I understand that. Are you ready for school? You're classes start today." she reminds me.
"I don't understand why I have to go to school with the humans," I complain.
"I told you, we might not be a part of their world, but our business is, and more importantly, our pack needs to be able to survive. That means peacefully co-existing, and we need to be used to them to do that. You know that our kind is here to protect the humans." Mom says.
"Our kind might be here to protect them, but I only care about protecting the pack. It's not my fault humans are so weak."
"Ryker, son, you might be Alpha here, but you need the humans. Without them using our businesses, the pack would have no money coming in. That means we couldn't buy food to feed everyone or pay the pack doctors. We need the humans just like they need us- they just don't know they need us." Mom explains.
"Ugh, fine. I guess you're right." I huff.
"And who knows, today might be the day you find your mate," Mom says excitedly, then takes a sip of her coffee.
"You say that every day." I roll my eyes.
"It's important never to lose hope. Every Alpha needs a Luna. She will make you and our pack stronger. And one of these days, I'm going to be right." she smirks.
"I know, mom." I roll my eyes.
"Ry, I'm in the car about to leave. Where are you? I'm going to leave without you." Steven's mind links me, sounding annoyed.
"Got to go. Steven is outside with the car waiting for me." I say, standing up.
"Ok. Tell Beta Steven that I hope he has a great day. I hope you have a good day too." Mom waves as I leave the room.
I walk outside the packhouse to see Steven pulled up by the front door waiting for me. I get in his car, and he takes off towards the human town to go to college.
"No, dude," Steven argues. "Alpha or not, there is no way you are beating a car to school. Maybe at first on the curvy back roads, yeah, but the second I hit the highway and start going 80- no way you beat that." Steven argues.
"You haven't considered how traffic factors in -" I shrug as I open the door to the building and walk inside as Steven follows behind me. The crowded halls start to empty as it's getting closer to classes to start. I'm immediately hit with the overwhelming stench of sweat and humans. Why do humans use things that make them smell different, all those smells piled on top of each other stink? But one thing smells good. No, it smells incredible.
"No, I have; it's just-" Steven continues to argue.
"Shut up," I say, sniffing the air. Where is that smell coming from? "You smell that?" I ask.
"What is it? I'll mindlink the pack to tell them-" he asks, sniffing the air as he goes on high alert.
"It smells like honeysuckles and-.... and candy?" I say, taking a good whiff of the air.
"I don't smell it at all," Steven says.
"You don't?" I ask. "It smells so good." The hall empties, so it's almost nobody. My eyes focus on a girl at the end of the hallway, and I just know the smell is coming from her. I have to get closer to her. It's like she is drawing me in.
"Where are you going?"
Steven and Micah run in front of me, making me stop walking towards the pretty girl. I want to kill them. Wait why? I don't know this girl. "What the hell, dude?" Steven asks, pushing me a few steps back.
Before I can answer, Dex shoves me to the back of my mind as my eyes change color to pitch black. Dex fights to get past Steven and Micah. "Mate!"
