4. THE ANNOUNCEMENT
“Did you hear that? They are here already!" Polly’s mum shouted in frustration as she descended down the stairs. The sound of her heels clicking on the tiled floor reverberated in the air. The sound of cars pulling up in their driveway had been pretty loud enough for Mary not to miss.
“Calm down Mary, everything will be okay, “His husband assured her as they made their way to the dining room.
“The flowers, the cutlery, the plates and wine glasses,” Everything was perfect. She loved it. She blew several breaths of relief before turning to look at her daughter Polly.
“You were right, I was just overreacting. Everything is indeed perfect,” She admitted with a small smile.
“I told you,” Polly shrugged lightly, a small smile patching up her face. She was happy to be right about all this.
“Don’t get too cocky Polly. Now, let’s go and welcome our guests,” she said , already walking towards the entrance but then the smile slipped off her face as she paused, “Polly, where is your sister?” Her mum stated with a panic tone. The last thing she’d need was things to go haywire right because of Serah’s absence.
“She will be here anytime soon mum,” Polly covered for her sister as she run her palms over the dark material of her sequin to smoothen any creases that might have been on it.
The dress was just above knee length. The dress was elegant especially now that it was strapless. She was indeed dressed to kill and her make-up was on point, not forgetting her hair that was styled to perfection. She actually felt pretty different this moment. She felt sexier and very confident, on this particular night. She was sure that her looks will leave Logan drooling all over her.
“Keep smiling okqy. They will be here any second from now,” Polly’s dad ordered and they all did as he asked, planting on the most impeccable of smiles.
Mary went ahead to open the door and they met the smiling faces of Naomi, Boaz and their son Logan whose smile was basically fake.
“Welcome,” Mary, Joseph and Polly said at each of their visitors as they walked into the house.
“Thank you so much Mary and Joseph for having us tonight. And of course, Polly. You look amazing tonight,” Naomi said on behalf of the family, appreciating Polly’s complete look.
“Thank you so much Mrs. Diaz,” she blushed lightly.
The parents went on to exchange pleasantries as Polly remained behind to talk to Logan.
“You clean up nice,” she complimented, trying not to stare so much at how yummy he looked in that suit. She looked calm on the outside but on the inside, her hormones were raving, punishing her ovaries.
“You don’t look bad yourself,” he smiled back at her, pushing his palms into the depth of his pant suit.
“Hey, do you want to come up my room, before dinner? I know our parents are going to be talking a lot before the dinner itself and I’m pretty sure we’d both be bored to death,” Polly caught herself asking Logan.
It took her every bit of courage to ask him this and that left her heart ramming hard against her chest. She hoped that Logan would say yes to her. She had been waiting for this moment in like forever.
Logan on the other hand wanted this night to end just like the way it started. He was ready for this because he knew that Polly had been on his case for the longest time and thus he was expecting something close to this.
He was not going to turn her down. He decided to do what he had asked of her and to make her happy I guess. He had intended on avoiding them but the moment he saw how Polly dressed up for him, he knew it would make her happy to get his attention.
Logan was not a bad person for he never wanted to burst Polly’s bubble. If going with her in her room could make her happy, then so be it.
“Mummy, we will be down here in a sec,” Polly excused the both of them and the parents who were doing some random talk agreed to Polly’s request.
Logan followed her to her room. He however felt at ease and that made him realize one thing, Serah was not in the vicinity. Serah hated him for no reason and by now ,she would have called him asshole or so.
He wanted to ask Polly about her sister but he chose to drop that topic. Polly wanted everything to be about her. The moment he will mention someone else. Then there was going to be a problem. She will end up feeling bad and that is what Logan didn’t want for her.
He was going to play along and hopefully get the time speeding so that this dinner would roll over quickly and he’d get to go back to the comfort of his room.
Polly was anxious as she turned the door lock of her room. Honestly, she didn’t have something to show to Logan. She had just excused the two of them so that she can hit the nail on the head and tell him exactly what she felt for him. There was no backing out from this, especially now that she had gotten the chance to talk.
“Nice room,” Logan commented bluntly as he looked around the room. He had not been here before despite being friends.
The grey theme made the room cozy yet expensive at the same time. He had to admit that, that was the right choice of color.
“Thank you,” Polly said with a small smile which faded in an instant when she remembered how difficult the task in front of her is.
Logan noticed this and being a gentleman he is, he decided to ask her what the matter is. He hated awkwardness and he was not about to let the air in here shift to awkwardness.
“Is everything alright Polly?” Logan cleared the air but Polly started shaking.
Logan walked forth to where she was standing and clasped her palms in his. Looking up, his eyes met hers and they ended up in a staring contest. While he was trying to understand what was going on with her, she was trying to find a way to broach the subject.
“Hey, you can tell me anything,” Polly watched as Logan assured her.
Staring at his perfect lips made her feel wet. She craved for him more than she cared to admit. Would she ever get the taste of him? All these thoughts ran through her mind.
“Um… I have something to tell you Logan and I have no idea how you are going to react but I-” She started off as Logan watched her lips but their conversation was cut short when her phone started ringing.
Serah’s number flushed on the screen and thus she had to leave everything she was doing to listen to what she has to say. f*****g Serah! Did she have to call right at this moment? If it was not for the fact that she needed to remind her to get back at home before dinner started, she would have switched off that phone immediately.
“Excuse me,” She sighed as she walked forth to grab her dark grey phone.
“Of course,” Logan said under his breath.
“Where are you Serah? Mum can’t stop asking for you,” Polly started scolding her sister. Serah had ruined her perfect moment to come clean about her feelings to Logan.
“Ease up. I‘m almost there. Is the dinner ready yet?” Serah asked.
“Yes,” Polly confirmed.
“Alright, I will be there in a few,” Serah said before hanging up.
Polly was about to pick from where she left with Logan but her mother had sent the maid Agatha to get them and tell them that dinner was about to be served.
Polly felt bad- actually disappointed would be the perfect word- as they descended down the stairs. She wished that she would have told Logan about what she felt for him. Who knows maybe he felt the same way about her?
The kids joined their parents in the dining table. They were not complete for Serah’s seat was empty, leaving everyone in question about Serah’s whereabouts.
***
“Are you sure that they will like me?” Charlie asked her girlfriend Serah as soon as they stepped out of her car once they got to the Sloan's' residence.
“They will like you. Just stay calm,” Serah assured her boyfriend with a wide smile.
Serah was not sure of what she was saying. She knew her mother despised the poor. However, she hoped for a miracle, a miracle that her mother will love her boyfriend.
The two love birds walked in silence to the main entrance.
“Mom? Is anyone home?” Serah called as she walked into the house, walking straight into the dining room, where the two families were seated.
“Mummy, daddy, I want you to meet my boyfriend,” Serah said and she waited for a while for her parents to respond.
Charlie was shaking like a chameleon in a feeble twig as he stood in the doorway waiting to be invited in.
Everyone heard her clearly. Her mother however is the only one who stood up to take care of everything.
“Serah,” Her mother forced a smile on her face.
“Mummy, meet Charlie…” Serah started speaking but her mother cut her off in an instant.
“Charlie or whatever the hell your name is, leave before I call the cops and tell them that you have been taking advantage of my daughter. I do not think I need to repeat myself,” Mary said through gritted teeth as Serah watched in horror not believing everything she just heard her mother spit.
This was impossible!
