Sage P.O.V.
To say I was surprised by his reaction would be the least. We were now back in his office, he said no more exploring until he was done with his duties. I pouted a little but found my peace within a book. I was now sitting comfortably on his couch with a book from off his shelf, it's called To Kill A Mocking Bird. I'm halfway through it now and it is amazing.
I heard Leon stand from his seat and looked over to see him gazing at me. It was amazing how one single look from him had my stomach doing flips.
"Ready?" he asked with a smile.
I stood and smiled at him. "Of course I am."
"We have one stop to make on our way out," he stated.
"Where to?" I asked.
"You'll see." His smile was so sweet, I didn't even know such sincerity existed.
We made our way out of his office and went down a few floors until we were standing in front of a mahogany door. Leon knocked twice and not too long after, Farah answered the door.
"You're here!" she exclaimed. She disappeared behind the door for a second before returning with a pair of white sneakers. "Here you go, Sage. I just went out and bought them for you, I hope they're the right size."
"You didn't have to do that Farah, thank you so much," I said, taking the shoes from her.
"No problem, anything I can do to help," she responded with a bright smile.
I slipped the shoes on and tied them. They fit perfectly.
"Farah, I don't know how to thank you enough. These are perfect," I said, hugging her.
"Don't worry about it, you earned them by putting that asshat, William, on his ass," she told me, laughing. "Now, go have fun on your little adventure."
I nodded and smiled at her.
"Thank you, again, Farah," Leon said.
"Don't mention it," she said with a wave of her hand.
We bid our goodbyes and walked out to the front of the castle. We started nearing the forest line when Leon grabbed my hand.
"How do you like your new shoes?" he asked.
"I love them," I beamed. "They're very comfortable."
"Good," he smiled down at me. "So, how long did it take you and that old man to get here yesterday?"
"Umm, about two hours," I told him.
"Damn, " he mumbled. "Okay, I have a suggestion. If you don't want to, we can just walk but I really don't want you to have to walk all the way back there so, if you choose to, you could ride on Killians back?"
He ended the suggestion like it was a question. He was running his hand through his hair once more, something I've noticed he does if he's nervous.
"Who's Killian?" I asked.
"My wolf."
So I would be riding on his wolfs back, basically. I didn't see anything wrong with that idea, and I was actually curious to meet his wolf. After thinking about it for a quick minute, I finally answered.
"Okay, I wouldn't mind doing that," I told him happily.
He seemed surprised by answer, causing me to giggle a little.
"Okay, then," he dragged out. "I'm gonna go behind the tree so I can shift." He pointed to a tree to side of him and then disappeared behind it.
I turned my back to it, rocking back and forth on my heels. I started whistling tunelessly until I heard the crunching of leaves behind me. I love early autumn when the leaves are just crisp and falling from the trees. When I turned around to face the wolf, my breath hitched audibly in my throat.
The magnificent jet black wolf was staring back at me with his tongue hanging out one side of his mouth. His eyes were a deep brown color now, contrasting to Leons normal hazel. He took slow steps towards me, the sunlight coming from in between the leaves on the trees were bouncing off his fur, making it gleam every so often.
I unconsciously put my hand up onto his head, petting his silky fur. He closed his eyes and leaned into my touch, causing me to smile.
"Hello, Killian. It's nice to meet you," I said, softly.
He seemed to get excited once the words left my mouth, his eyes shot open and he trotted a little in front of me. I couldn't contain my chuckles from his behavior. He leaned down on his front elbows, signaling for me to climb on. I walked up to him and grabbed onto his fur, readying to throw myself over.
"Be easy with me, this is my first time." I was messing with him, clenching my thighs around his side.
He let out a growl, one that I didn't quite know the meaning behind and then took off like a bat out of hell. I was enjoying the feeling for the most part, it was like I was flying. He started going so fast that the wind was pinching at my face. I leaned down farther into his fur to protect myself from the air. Once we had reached so far off, he slowed down and looked from left to right. I pointed straight ahead, telling him the way. I recognized the clear blue stream with the small waterfall we had passed just yesterday.
Killian started sniffing the ground, following mine or James' scent to the cabin. After another twenty minutes, we finally saw the small cabin in the clearing. I jumped off his back and took two slow steps towards the cabin. We were still about thirty feet away from it, but one thing in particular caught my attention.
Killian went behind a tree and I could hear the sounds of bones breaking and shifting. After a few seconds, Leon came back from around the tree with his jeans on but still unbuttoned. I felt my face heat up and averted my gaze. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him throwing his shirt over his head and buttoning his pants.
"Is that it?" he asked, pointing towards the cabin.
"It is, but I'm pretty sure that back door was closed," I told him.
He seemed to be on high alert after that. We walked around to see the front of the place, with Leon keeping me behind him in case of any danger. When we didn't spot any, we started walking slowly to the cabin. The front door had been knocked off the top hinge and was laying sideways in the threshold. Leon went in first, sniffing the air inside.
"I only smell faint scents, I don't think anyone is here now," he said.
"Scents?"
"Besides yours and the old mans, there's three others lingering in here."
We walked all the way inside and the sight caused me to gasp. Everything was either flipped over or torn apart. It was like a tornado had ransacked it in just a day. I ran to my closet, the door wide open and all of my things thrown around and ripped apart. I started going through my books, all of them ripped in two. I had to fight back the angry tears.
I ran to reclining chair, praying my favorite book was tucked away. The chair was flipped on the side, stuffing coming out everywhere. I reached down in between the cushion and felt the book. I breathed a sigh of relief. I pulled it out and, amazingly, it was still the same way I had left it. In all honesty, this was the only thing I wanted from here. I looked at the title page and smiled, The Princess Bride. It was the third book James ever gave to me and was my all time favorite, I've read it too many times to count.
As I looked up, Leon was walking up the stairs to the bedrooms. I took this time to assess the further damages. I walked into the kitchen and stopped at the kitchen table. It was the only thing here that wasn't turned upside down or broke into pieces. As I looked further, I noticed a small piece of paper sitting atop it.
With slow hands, I reached down and grabbed the paper. It was folded down with my name written across. Whoever left it must've been very angry, my name was written so hard into the thin paper that it tore through in some spots. I let out a long breath and opened it.
I was holding back hot tears as I read the contents of the paper. It was hard understanding any of what it said. A sudden creak of the floorboards caused me to jump. I turned and saw Leon staring at me intently. He looked from me to the paper in my hands and nodded his head towards it.
"What's that?" he asked as he walked up to me.
Quickly, I folded the paper up and tried stuffing it behind my back.
"It's nothing," I said with a fast and shaky voice.
He narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms. "Well, if it's nothing then you wouldn't mind me reading it." He outstretched his hand towards me.
"Actually, I would," I said, trying to move away from him. Luck was not on my side because I backed up right into the table. Now I'm trapped between this table and Leon.
"How about a compromise?" he asked, mischievously.
"What's that?"
"We both get what we want. I won't read the note," he said, earning a sigh of relief from me. But the next words that came out of his mouth caused me to pale. "So you have to read it to me, then."
I stared at him in utter shock. He wasn't going to let up, I could tell.
"It's one or the other, Sage," he said, taking slow steps towards me.
I gritted my teeth and narrowed my eyes at him.
"Fine," I grumbled out. He smiled so big, I had to resist the urge to roll my eyes.
I pulled the note out of the back of my pants and held it up with shaky hands. After taking a deep breath, I started reading it.
Hello Dearie,
It's been so long since last talking to you, although that is because you were supposed to be dead. But fear not, I will finish what I started. The only reason you've gotten by me all these years is because of that despicable uncle that keeps trying to hide you from me. But I know where you are now dearie. If you are not at the waterfall by 3am tonight , that entire disgusting kingdom of wolves will be slaughtered right in front of your eyes. And it will all be your fault. Choose wisely, I'll be waiting.
As soon as I got the last word out, Leon had let out a snarl powerful enough to shake the whole cabin. He stormed out of the front door and shifted into his wolf before his feet ever touched the grass. He started running back towards the way we came. Clutching the book and the note, I ran out after him.
"Hey! You can't leave me here to walk back by myself, I don't even know the way," I yelled out after him.
I saw him in the distance come to a halt. He raced back to me and nudged his head, telling me to come on. I jogged over to him and he lifted himself down enough for me to jump over his back. As soon as my legs clenched around his sides, he took off.
We made it back to the castle in record time. Travis, Farah, and Kenny were all waiting for us by the front doors. Killian slowed down enough for me to jump off and then he trotted into the castle.
"Where's he going?" I asked the three of them.
"Probably to put some clothes on," Kenny chuckled, my mouth forming an "O" shape.
"He mind linked us to meet in his office about the note, Sage," Travis said, moving his arm around Farahs waist.
"Do you still have it?" she asked me.
I held up the note, showing them.
"Can we see it?" Kenny asked. This is the first time I've seen him with a serious look.
"Of course," I said, handing it over.
We all walked inside and up the countless flights of stairs towards his office. My heart was still in overdrive from when I first picked that piece of paper up. There were plenty of nerve wracking and scary things it had said, but I think the one thing that scared me the most was one of the subtle words: uncle.
