Sage P.O.V. I turned around in my chair only to lock eyes with the one and only, asshole Alpha King, Leon. I took only a moment to drink in his appearance. He wore a black cotton V-neck that showed off a little chest hair, almost causing me to drool, and a pair of blue jeans with regular hiking boots. He looked laid back with his outfit today, unlike his usual dress shirt and slacks. When I looked back up at his face, I found the asshole smirking at me. I glared at him for a second before turning back around in my chair and holding my head high. Asshole. I could almost feel his eyeroll from behind me as he walked over to sit on the other side of me. I tried to keep a poker face up so Grace wouldn't suspect any kind of emotion or feelings between her son and I. I could see out of the corner of my eye though as she looked back and forth between the two of us before a small smile played on her lips and she shook her head. "May I get you a cup of tea, Your Highness?" Grace asked sarcastically as she stood up from her chair. "Mother," Leon sighed, sitting back in his chair. "Please don't do that to me." "Oh, am I your mother? I almost forgot I had any children at all," she spat. "I didn't come here to argue with you, I came to talk to Sage," Leon said exasperatedly. "Well, if that's the only reason you came, then you can see yourself out. I was having a nice conversation with your mother, as was planned last night, before you interrupted us," I said with a cold tone, not even sparing him a glance. I heard him sigh once more but he never moved. An awkward silence filled the room as we all sipped our tea. I noticed from the corner of my eye that Grace was staring at her son. When I looked in her direction, I saw her eyes looking glossed over. I diverted my attention to Leon and his eyes looked the exact same. Shit. It was my turn to sigh and sit back in the chair. They're mind linking or whatever the hell it's called. I tightened my grip around the mug just as Grace cleared her throat. "Well, I have to go out to get my laundry off the line. Will you kids be okay in here?" she asked, getting up from her chair and walking towards the door. "We'll be fine, mother. Thank you," Leon told her. With a nod of her head, and one last look to me, she exited the little home. I refused to look at Leon. I just kept my head up and eyes down, staring into the dark liquid. From my peripheral view, I saw Leon running a rough hand down his face. He leaned his elbows on the table to come a little closer to me. I finally looked over at him and was a little surprised by what I found. He was looking all over my face, like he was trying to memorize each feature. I wanted to mess with him and turn my body the complete opposite way, but I was stuck in this trance. I liked the way his eyes raked over me, head to toe. As if he had never seen anything like it before. It caused my stomach to fill with every kind of flying insect and my skin to burn hot. My breathing picked up it's pace while my heart went from beating erratically to skipping a beat. His eyes eventually found their way back to mine, unconsciously my lips parted. I was expecting him to start kissing major ass, apologizing on his knees while begging for my forgiveness. Boy, was I wrong. "You look really good today," he said nonchalantly. My eyes narrowed and I had to refrain myself from smacking him upside his head. Is this really his best attempt at sucking up? I huffed out a breath I had been holding and turned around in my seat while shaking my head. He's going to have to do better than that. I drank the last bit of the warm tea in my cup and slammed it back down on the table. Leaning back in the chair again, I crossed my arms over my chest. I heard Leon sigh once more. "You know, you could've just waited for me a little longer," he said in an annoyed tone. Now that struck a nerve. "Waited for you a little longer? Really Leon? I waited all morning outside of your office for you just to be ignored! We agreed to go out this morning but I waited all the way until this afternoon to leave," I said with a slightly raised voice. "What the hell had you so damn occupied, hm?" "Someone sounds like they might be a little jealous," he chuckled lowly. My hands balled into fists thinking about how he could have been with another woman all day. Anger running through my body was rare. But right now, I was livid. I stood up and walked over to the counter, then back. Trying to walk off my emotions, I guess. "Sage," Leon started. I shot him a death glare, one that made him gulp in return. I continued my fast pace between the table and kitchen counter. I wanted to hit him with a skillet like I did that other wolf. "Sage," Leon tried again with a soft voice. He stood from his chair, but kept a reasonable distance between us. "Look, I'm sorry I made you wait for so long. I admit at first I was nervous and even a bit cowardly. But I want you to know, I wasn't in my office this morning. Besides eating breakfast there, I was over in the dungeons for most of the day." My head snapped in his direction, looking for any kind of deception in his features. Looking deep in his eyes, they showed nothing but remorse. "Why were you in the dungeons?" I asked, still pissed. "James," he answered simply. "The Cook Omegas told me that he was causing such a ruckus this morning they could hear it through the floorboards." "I thought the dungeons were across the field?" "Those are for the rabid rouges or pack members that have went a little mentally unstable. The dungeons in the basement cellar are used for rouges or people needed to extract information from. Anyway, when I went down to see what his problem was he told me that something is going to happen very soon, within the next month or two. I was down there most of the morning asking him questions about who it is trying to kill you and if he knew about your curse." "What did he say?" I asked, stepping closer to Leon. "He knew about your curse. But he said he wouldn't give those answers to me, which means you will have to go talk to him at some point," he said, giving me a pointed look. "Fine," I said as I took my seat. "I will talk to him after we get this whole 'talking to your mother' thing out of the way. Did you hear what she said about the Coven?" "I did not, but she's on her way back inside now so we can all talk then," he said just as Grace came through the door. She sat back down in her chair and looked between us smiling. Reaching up, she removed the large straw hat from atop her head, revealing her beautiful silver blonde hair. "I'm glad you two are on better terms now. You know son, Sage here would be the perfect choice of a chosen mate. Brave, caring, a positive mindset and pure of heart, while also being able to make you grovel. Perfect Luna and Queen qualities," she said in a happy gentle tone. I felt myself stiffen and pale at her words. Although I was flattered, I just couldn't see myself as such. As far as I'm concerned, I'm still that average human girl with absolutely no social skills and no helpful experienced tips to give people. "Mother," Leon groaned. "This is not why we came." She laughed at the faces we were making, enjoying the tension she had created. "I'm sorry, it just needed to be said. Now onto this Coven. Leon, have you ever heard of the Gemini Coven?" she asked, regaining composure. "No, surprisingly I haven't. Is it some black market coven?" he asked with distaste. "No, and it's no surprise if you haven't. They live just North of here, across the Canadian border yet still situated within the woodlands. It's really only about a forty-five minute drive from here," Grace said, interlocking her fingers on the tabletop in front of her. "Is there anyway to contact them to ask if we can visit?" I asked. "Unfortunately, no. They still live as if it is the nineteenth century, log cabins and eighteenth-hundred style clothing," she said with a shake of her head. "Then we'll find someone else. I don't feel comfortable stepping onto a claimed territory without them having some sort of knowledge of us coming," Leon said sternly. "I can understand that, son, but do you know of any other kind of Coven that won't ask for anything in return? They pick and choose who they decide to help, and even though there is a slim chance they won't, I believe whole heartedly they will help Sage. There are not many people now-a-days who are as pure of heart as she is. Everywhere she goes, positivity follows. She is something special," Grace said with her chin raised. I blushed at her statement, and I could see Leon trying to find an argument to combat her, but he fell silent. Crossing his arms and letting out a huff, he finally released a clenched "Fine" from his lips. "Good," Grace said, putting her hands on mine. "Don't worry, dear. All will be well soon enough." I nodded my head and smiled brightly at her. I was honestly excited to meet real full-blooded witches, feeling Elaines magic was one thing, but this would be an amazing experience. "Great, so when do we leave?" a male voice asked from the archway leading into the living room. All heads turned to mystery man, he was older with dark black hair and a short dark beard to match. He didn't have a shirt on, so his muscles were gleaming in the sun, and his jeans and belt were left unbuckled. "John! What the hell are you doing coming out here in such a manner?" Grace exclaimed, jumping up from her chair. "Mom, what the f**k is going on?" Leon asked in a low growl. "I'm sorry, Grace, I didn't know you had company," the man named John apologized to Grace. He walked over and kissed her on the cheek, earning another low growl from Leon. "My King," he said, bowing in Leons direction. "I was wondering why you weren't on patrol," Leon growled. "Will someone please answer me and tell me what the f**k is going on?!" "Oh, you hush," Grace scolded her son, earning a slight giggle from me. By now John had his belt done and walked over to me with a smile. I smiled back and extended my hand and he took it and brought it to his lips. What a gentlemen, I swooned. "I don't think I've ever had the pleasure of meeting this beautiful young lady. Where has my king been hiding you all this time?" he asked with a cheeky smile. "Very charming," I laughed. "But I just came into the Kingdom a few days ago. My name is Sage." "Ah, so you're not part of the pack?" he asked. "No, sadly I'm not. I don't even have a wolf, well, at least I don't think I do. Honestly, I'm not eve sure of what to call myself anymore," I said with a sad chuckle. "Don't worry too much, dear. I know my son and I know he will help you in any possible way he can," Grace said encouragingly. "So why don't we all head back now to discuss things, hm?" "Um, actually, John would you mind accompanying me outside for a little while? The sole purpose of us coming today was for Leon and his mother to work out their tensions and now, everything has been focused on me and I don't like that," I stated firmly. Everyone was looking at me with shocked expressions and I started growing a little uncomfortable. Shifting in my seat, I decided to stand up and ring my hands. John approached me with a smirk while pulling a dark blue shirt over his head. He reached behind me and opened the door before stepping aside for me to walk out. "Well, we will be outside waiting, Your Majesties. Take however long is needed," John said professionally and I cringed at myself for forgetting I was ordering two royal werewolves to talk out their differences. Just before John shut the door behind him, I heard Grace give a soft chuckle while saying, "I still stand by my decision about her being your chosen mate, son." I smiled and let out a breath, looking up at the perfectly white clouds in the sky. There was a soft breeze in the air filled with the fragrance of nature and I found myself basking in it. John soon stepped by my side at the tree line and smiled big down at me. He really was an attractive man for being older, his hair only slightly greying and hardly any wrinkles on his sun kissed face. "What?" I asked him. "It's just nice to see someone putting King Leon in his place finally," he chuckled. "And also getting Grace to open up. It took me years for her to even say one word to me after the former Kings passing, and we grew up together. From the same pack previously, went to school together as adolescents, and when she finally found out she was mated to the Alpha King, she practically begged him to bring me along as well and to have me trained in the Kings Army." "Wow, that's amazing," I said, taken aback by how kind the Queen really is. "You know, you kind of remind me of her when we were younger. I agree with what she said back there about Leon choosing you," he stated, amused. I chuckled and shook my head. "I doubt it. I've been secluded all my life, I have no idea how a real monarchy works or how to lead people. People like me just aren't cut out for this kind of stuff." "Which is exactly why you remind me of her. Grace cried for three days straight after she found out, but just like I told her, actions speak louder than words. And what you just did back there was pretty damn awesome." "Maybe, but this is a topic for another day," I chuckled. He nodded and Leon came walking out with a tearful Grace on his side. My look must've been one of worry because when Leon saw me, he just shook his head and gave me a bright smile. "Everything's alright, Sage," he assured me. "Yes," Grace sniffled. "I've always been a rather emotional wolf." She wiped away a few remaining tears and straightened out her shoulders, holding her head high. "Now, let's get back home to discuss this trip." And with that, we all started on our small trek back to the castle. Grace and John were leading the way while Leon and I followed hand in hand. We stole a glance at each other and I swore my heart stopped beating. He shot me that million dollar smile that turned my insides acrobatic and gently caressed my knuckles with the pad of his rough thumb. I felt my legs go numb but pushed forward. And just like that, my headache from earlier came back with a vengeance.
