Kyle’s POV:
I waited for to come in the next morning. As she opened the door, I felt jittery with excitement “Morning Jane, sleep well.” She jumped a little and turned to me with huge, frightened eyes. I had scared her.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you”
She gave me a small shy smile, and my heart skipped a beat “No, it’s okay, I just wasn’t expecting you there”
“Can I get you a cup of coffee” she frowned and then checked what I was busy with. She gave me a disapproving look “No, I’m supposed to that”
She gave me a soft shove and started making the coffee. “I can get my own coffee you know, I’m a grown man”
“Yeah, I know that, but this is my job and I like doing it”
She grabbed a cup and made my coffee exactly how I liked it. I took a sip “Delicious”
She beamed at the compliment and I was now happy I let her make my coffee “Thank you”
I stood there staring at her for a couple of seconds before I realised what I was doing. I gave myself a mental shake. “So what’s for breakfast?”
I thought I’d make you some pancakes. “Sounds great”
“I’ll call you when breakfast is ready” this was a clear dismissal, she wanted me gone.
I cleared my throat before I said “Okay I’ll be in the study, call me when breakfast is ready”
She didn’t even look back up at me when she “Will do”
I felt a little insulted was she not as attracted to me as I was to her.
I walked back to my study and fell onto the chair, I stared at my work but it just didn’t hold any interest for me.
Dammit somehow this little minx has managed to matter to me. My phone rang and I saw Greta number, I immediately ignored the call and went back to my sulking.
Jane’s POV:
When I realised he was the one standing in the kitchen, I wanted him out. he had invaded my whole life with his presence, making for very a very uncomfortable night. For some inexplicable reason I was drawn to him, but it was more, I wanted him in every sense of the word.
I didn’t have that much experience with men. Just some clumsy kisses in high school. When my mother got sick I was focussed on her only, getting her better and when she died I was so focussed on getting a place to stay and then working for Mrs Carmichael, that I never dated. Mrs Carmichael tried to encourage me, but I couldn’t because now I was too scared to do it. I was still a normal girl with normal urges but this fear was controlling me now.
I watched as he moved in and out of the study. I wanted him badly, but I could never have him. I thought of Jim at the garage, he was a motor mechanic there, he had always asked me out, maybe I should just go on a date with him. Try and loosen this grip that fear had on me.
I watched as Mr. Carmichael, I mean Kyle walked back into the kitchen. “Pancakes ready yet.”
I stared down at my hands stirring the batter absentmindedly. “In about 15 minutes”
He smiled at me and my heart skipped a beat “Okay just let me know”
He looked back at me when he walked away and I felt a tingle start in my stomach.
I quickly finished the breakfast and then went to get him. The study door was slightly ajar. As I was about to knock, I heard him on the phone.
“Greta, I told you, I needed to work. That’s the reason I came here, I need to finish this book and you phoning and checking up on me constantly is very distracting”
I could only hear his side of the conversation “Fine, I’ll call you tonight”
I tried to picture the woman in his life, but the images that came to mind had me feeling like crap, so I forced myself to stop.
As he put down the phone, I knocked on the door. “Hi Kyle, breakfast is ready”
He slapped his hands together and smiled “Oh good, I’m famished”
I grabbed the chocolate chip pancakes and he followed me into dining room. I placed the pancakes on the table and watched as Kyle pulled out my chair for me.
I felt a little self-conscious, but I sat down on the chair, and he helped me push it in.
“This looks scrumptious” he loaded is plate with pancakes and then started eating them.
I stared at him and then cleared my throat “You’re not going to put syrup on or maybe some butter”
He looked at me and smiled and I noticed some dimples appear. I didn’t notice them before and now they were all I could look
at. “You’re right I should”
He poured some syrup and butter on and then started eating again “Much better” he spoke with his mouth full and I couldn’t help laughing. He stared at me and then swallowed loudly. He kept looking at me and I felt a little uncomfortable. I finally got the courage to stare back at him.
“What?”
“You have a beautiful laugh, you know”
I could only utter a small “Thank you”
We kept eating in silence. When he finished he got up from the table “Oh I wanted to ask you, did you ever find what you were looking for”
I could feel my face turning beet red “What?”
He gave me a small smile “Yeah I watched you run up and down the path leading to your apartment yesterday, it looked like you
were searching for something”
“Yeah I lost my earing and yes I did find it”
I jumped up quickly and started clearing the plates and kitchen.
