Chapter 9 – An Unexpected Turn Nat Leland stood in the cockpit of the Interplanetary Freight & Transport vessel Canes Venatici. He watched the indicator on the pilot's console. It was nearly time. “That's it, sir,” the pilot said. “Closing her up.” The indicator changed from red to green. Nat nodded. Everything was proceeding smoothly. “Decoupling,” the pilot said. There was the slightest of tremors, and then the Canes Venatici detached from Solar Terminal and began its long journey through space. Nat turned and exited the cockpit, filling the air with the annoying racket of his sticky boots. The corridors were littered with tied-down crates of prepackaged food, forcing him to weave. He passed the occasional soldier or two, but didn't pay any of them much mind. They were psychopaths
