Lia
Six months later
Today is Christmas day, also my 27th birthday. I’m currently sitting down, waiting for Ty, and also gathering my strength before getting my bag and going home.
It’s now 8 pm, and I started at 6 am this morning. I was supposed to go home at 2 pm, but I couldn’t. There was a big accident, and we were swamped. Things are better now though, so I can go. From here, I’m heading home to change, then off to Ty’s parents’ house. They have invited me over for Christmas dinner.
I check my phone and there are missed calls from my parents and Chris.
Chris and I have been going out ever since our lunch date. He asked me out on an official date the week after, and I found myself saying yes. I was attracted to him the first day I saw him. I just didn’t want to admit it to myself. I’m glad I gave him a chance. He’s amazing and he treats me like a queen.
For this whole six months that I’ve known him, I haven’t had a meltdown about Aiden once; I don’t even think about him like I used to. He makes me happy, and I’m surprised myself. I didn’t see myself being happy any time soon. We even had a double date with Sabrina and Dylan three months ago before she left for London again. She was very impressed and finally stopped nagging me about meeting him. She has this thing of acting like my mother when she’s here.
That night with Ty woke me up. It made me realize that I needed to get my act together and stop crying over spilled milk. I need to start living my life the way that I should. Plus, I depended on Ty too much, which wasn’t fair to him. He also needs to live his life and find love again.
Chris and I haven’t had s*x yet or made things official, but I feel things are heading in that direction.
“Hey, ready to go?” Ty asks me while giving me his hand, pulling me up.
“Yeah… let’s go. I’ll call my parents when I get home.”
“Lia.”
“Mm.”
“You know that if you want… to go over to Chris’s you can, right? Don’t get me wrong. I'd love nothing more than having you over tonight, but I also understand that it’s not just you and me anymore,” Ty says as we walk to our cars.
“I know, but I want to be with you guys tonight. Chris understands that you’re my second family.”
I get inside my car, and he also walks back to his car after closing my door. He’s always a gentleman, even when exhausted, he always walks me to my car. I’m very lucky to have a friend like him. I just wish he could also find someone great and be loved. He deserves it. We still do our Friday dates, I’ll always be there for him and Kiara. I love them; they are my family. Aunt Debbie, his mom, has invited me over for dinner tonight. She didn’t want me to spend Christmas alone since I couldn’t be with my parents.
Last year my parents flew over for Christmas, but this year mom phoned me on the 24th telling me that they were unable to get a flight. They couldn’t book early cause they weren’t sure when my dad would be coming home. Ty was there when I received the call, and he invited me over to his parents’ place. I said yes, I already do all family things with them, ever since I moved here. I was really looking forward to seeing my parents though. I miss them so much. When I got home, Debbie called me, inviting me over again.
I sigh, deciding to get going, but my phone rings.
“Hey, you,”
“Hey, where are you? Are you still at the hospital?”
“Yes, but I’m about to head home. How is it going over there? Having a good time?”
“Yes, everything’s great. It would even be better if you were here, though. You’re the only thing I’ve been thinking about this whole evening,” Chris says, and I can tell he’s smiling.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t be there with you. I had already said yes to Debbie and I didn’t want to say no and-”
“-Hey, hey,” he cuts me off. “It’s okay, I get it. You don’t have to explain yourself. I just miss you, that’s all. But I do understand your position. Are you going straight there or going home first?”
“I’m going home first to change. I need a cold shower.”
“Okay. I’m going to let you go then. I will speak to you later, yes?”
“Yes, I’ll call you and Chris… I miss you too,” I tell him and end the call after that.
Chris also invited me to spend Christmas with his family, when I told him about my parents’ flight issues. I couldn’t accept because I had already accepted Debbie’s invitation and I felt it was not right to suddenly just decide to go somewhere else.

I get home and park in front of my garage, there’s no need to put my car inside cause I’m just going to shower, change and leave again. I walk up to my door and open it.
Walking in, I get hit by this aroma. It smells like delicious food in here. I’m wondering what’s going on as I progress further into the house, and just then I get the shock of my life.
My parents are here in my living room. They shout 'surprise' and I drop my purse on the floor, before running to them, throwing myself in their arms as we embrace each other and I cry. I didn’t expect this. I'm overwhelmed with emotion. My father rubs circles on my back while I just hold on to them sobbing. There are no words to express how I feel.
“How are you guys here? I thought you didn’t get a flight?”
“We didn’t,” my mother replies as we pull back from the hug.
“Then what happened? How are you here?”
“We got a call from Sabrina yesterday, about an hour after we called you. She told us a car would be coming to pick us up, someone had organized a flight for us.”
“What?” I ask surprised, interrupting my mother, “I know, I had the same reaction. We asked who it was, and she said it’s a friend of yours that wanted to surprise you. We wanted to be here with you, so we agreed and got ready. A car really came to pick us up like she said and took us to the airport, where we found a private jet waiting for us.”
“What? I can’t believe Dylan did that.” Sabrina must have put him up to it.
“It wasn’t Dylan.”
“It wasn’t?”
“No. We thought maybe it was him too. When we touched down, a car was already waiting for us, and it brought us here. Sabrina phoned us to tell us where you keep the spare key and your father told her we wanted to thank Dylan. And that's when she told us it wasn’t Dylan.”
“Then who? Who could it be?
“I don’t know, but she said you know this person.”
I’m still standing in front of my mother, my mouth agape, not having a clue as to whom this mystery person could be, when I hear my phone’s ringtone. I rush over to my bag, hoping it's him or her, but it’s Chris.
“You won’t believe what I’m about to tell you right now. My parents are here, Chris! Some mystery person wanted to surprise me for my birthday, and to say that they have succeeded is an understatement. I can’t even describe how it felt walking in and finding mom and dad here. This is the best birthday/Christmas present ever. I can’t believe my parents are here, Chris!” I tell him, bouncing around like a little girl. Not even taking the time to breathe, I’m over the moon right now.
He chuckles at my excitement, “I’m glad you like it. Merry Christmas.”
“What? You did this? How… how did you do this?” I ask him, shocked; I would never have suspected him. How did he organize all this?
“I’ll tell you all about it later, I promise. For now, enjoy your parents. I couldn’t be with you today and make your day special. So I thought the least I could do was make your evening special,” he replies, and I didn’t think it was possible to fall for him any more than I already have, but I do, hard.
I stay silent for a moment, overcome with emotion.
“Lia? Are you okay?”
“I’m… I’m fine.” I reply, wiping away the few tears that managed to escape. “Thank you, Chris. I don’t know what to say… this means so much to me. I'm truly at a loss for words. Thank you.”
“You’re very welcome. Now go be with your parents. I’m sure you guys have a lot to catch up on. I’ll see you tomorrow? I’d love to come have lunch with you if it’s okay.”
“Yes, of course, I would love that…”
“Goodnight, love.”
“Goodnight.” I end the call and walk to the dining area, where I find the table set with all my favorite dishes, “When did you do this?” I ask my mother, drooling over the mouthwatering goodies.
“We got here at 11 am, so I decided to make myself useful,” she replies, adding some more treats to the table.
“And you went grocery shopping? Cause I didn’t have all this stuff.”
“Yes, but I had help. Debbie helped.”
“Oh, okay... Wait a minute; did she know you were coming?”
“Yes, and she knew not to say anything.”
“And Ty?”
“No, he didn’t.”
We sit down and start serving ourselves some of the delicious food. But we don't forget to hold hands and say grace first. My dad makes a toast to my birthday and being together, and we drink to that.
We chat throughout dinner, catching up with each other, and my mind keeps drifting off to Chris and the fact that I’m with the two people I love most in this world right now, feeling absolute bliss because of him.
