Zeus was whining about all the training I was having him do, while I was busy making him breakfast.
“Vee why do I have to run for two hours on the treadmill again, its boring.” He whined while wiping the sleep out of his eyes. “Can I just skip it and just do some yoga?”
“Sure, but I’ll add on an extra hour of kung fo training and an hour of sword training.” I said while stirring the eggs. I was frying bacon and made some toast from some bread I made the day before. I am still shocked by how fully stocked this kitchen is. We have been training for over 6 months now and both of us were trained in 6 martial arts, I was more skilled with swords, knives, and hand pistols. Zeus on the other hand was skilled with rifles, throwing knives, and anything with a scope.
We had both gotten extremely skilled with taking apart an engine and rebuilding it. We can now fix anything that has an engine, and you can drive, even though we don’t have a license or are old enough yet. My birthday was in 2 months and I was really excited to meet my wolf.
“Ok Zo, here you go,” I said as I placed a huge plate of food in front of him. While he ate, I went back through all the maps and files my dad and placed her for us. “tonight we need to decide if we are going to stay longer or if we are going to leave at the end of the year.” I said as I was mid stride chewing my food. I know its rude to talk with your mouth full, but I knew he didn’t care.
“Sounds good, but we should also figure out how to beef up the truck and bikes. I need to set up a bugout bag of tools for just in case situations, and I do think we should save all the dry food for when we leave so that we have stuff to eat just in case something happens.” Zeus said while he started spitting food as he talked.
“Ok, no! you chew then talk.” I stated while wiping his food off my glass. “Eww!”
I was proud of how smart Zo had become in such a short time. He was really getting into the training and he was slowing growing more defined and I knew he would be able to beat me soon in our sparring sessions.
“I also think we should set up dead drops for some of our stash, we may not be able to come back here and I don’t want to be stranded with nothing.” Zo said as I grinned and nodded.
“Ok slacker go do your yoga while I run on the treadmill.” I said as I cleared the table and set the dishes in the sink to soak.
A few hours later we were both done with our training and had showered. I stared at our food supply and started separating things for different drops, what we will take with us, and what we need to still eat while we are here. I was separating things to different areas when I saw a brick in the wall that looked weird.
“Hey Zo, come here. I think I found something.” I yelled over my shoulder.
“What’s up? Need something off the top shelf?” He snickered
“Just because you had a growth spurt doesn’t mean you need to rub it in” I said as I stared up at him. He was now 5’8” and I knew he would get taller when his wolf came. I on the other hand will not be getting any taller. I stuck my lip out and pouted.
“Ok sorry just put your lip away, what did you find?” He chuckled while looking at where I pointed. “Hold on let’s see” He mumbled as he reached out for the brick and removed it with little effort. “Ok that’s weird, do you have a flashlight?” I went off to the kitchen and pulled a flashlight from the junk drawer and went back to where he was. I handed him the light and he flicked it on and viewed into the now open space.
“Look what I found!” He said excitedly as he pulled a wooden box out of the hole and handed it to me.
I brought the box over to the table and sat down. The box was carved with the design of a wolf howling at the moon and a forest scape along the sides. It was painted but it looks like a child did it due to the fact the wolf has rainbow fur. I chuckled as I opened the clasp and lifted the lid. Inside was lined with blue velvet and held two rings, a book, and a pair of small ear cuffs. I had to slap Zo’s hand away a few times while I reached into the box for the book. He whimpered then huffed and walked over to the maps to start picking dead drop locations.
Mist wolves was handwritten on the cover of the book, it looked old and well read. I started to read it, but the first line caught my attention.
If you can read these words written within these pages, you my dear child are of the same brethren as those before you. You who shall forever be feared and hunted. You who shall forever be loved and lost. You whom the moon goddess herself has blessed, shall forever be a whisper and a mist walker.
Mist walker, I heard that before but from where? I could not place it. “Hey Zo? Have you ever heard of a mist walker?” I asked drawing his attention to me.
“You mean like the stories Dad would tell us at bedtime?” He asked c*****g his head to the side as if he was thinking.
“Oh, that’s right I forgot thanks.” I said as I almost facepalmed myself. I cant believe I forgot those.
I continued reading on through the book while Zo stared at me like I should have explained in further detail why I asked him in the first place. After a few minutes I heard a huff and then more rustling of papers, so I knew he went back to his maps.
I finished reading it just as Zo’s stomach rumbled letting me know it was time for dinner. I picked up the larger of the rings and one of the ear cuffs and walked over to him.
“Do you trust me?” I asked as he slightly acknowledged my presence. “Zo? Do you trust me?”
“Oh, now you wanna talk to me?” He glared at me and I could see he had his lip slightly out pouting.
“yes, now answer the question do you trust me?” I chuckled
“I trust you,” He said, then lifted an eyebrow at me. “Why?”
I reached forward and clipped the cuff onto his right ear, and it immediately clamped on and connected itself together through his ear.
“Ow what the hell Vee!!!” He screamed and tried to get the cuff off, but it refused to budge.
“Here now put this on your left thumb.” I said as he still danced around
He glared at me and grabbed the ring and slid it onto his finger, it to clamped down but then they both disappeared.
“Cool, so it works! Hold on a second I have to put mine on.” I said as I walked over to the box and clamped the cuff on my left ear and the ring on my right thumb. As soon as it disappeared, I focused on singing “It’s a small world after all” in my head and directed my thoughts to Zo.
Zo’s eyes got huge. “Woah, were you just singing that terrible song in my head?” I nodded. He instantly sent back through the link his version of “Radioactive” and I grimaced.
“You’re cute but you can’t carry a tune to save your life,” I scoffed.
“Nice sis, really nice, now are you done with the magic show or do you have more?” He said, yep always down to business when his interest was piqued, I thought.
“So apparently, we are called Mist walkers, when our wolves come, we will need to train with them to walk unseen. We are the last of the mist wolves. It says we are royalty.”
“Cool! what else?” he was getting fidgety now which I knew meant he was excited.
“We are hunted for our blood, though the hunters haven’t realized only our mates share our power. We have mates whose wolves will know us before we know them and we are powerful. The book states we will each get a special skill that will arrive a week after we shift. Everyone is different and no two skills are the same.” I said as he just nodded and looked more enthralled as I went on. “The ear cuff and ring are a way for us to be connected even at extremely long distances. They act like homing beacons so we can always find each other. They sing when we are more than a few miles apart. So, it will sing the directions, as in east, west, or hot or cold, depending on the personality of the wearer. They are now bound to us and will only reveal themselves when we pass away.” I stated as I started walking to the kitchen to make us some dinner. Zo’s stomach was not liking the idea of going for much longer without something in it.
“Anything else or are you just leaving me hanging here?” Zo pouted
“The last line in the book said our wolves will reveal all to us as we need to know it, or whatever that means, so I guess now we wait.” I said returning to the matter of dinner.
