We Must Live
“Run Baby Girl!” My mother hissed, as she sobbingly shoved my brother and I through the open cellar door. Quickly she slammed it shut and I could hear the locks clicking into place.
“I want to stay with mom!” My brother Zeus whimpered.
“we have to go; they are coming, and we need to go.” I said as my eyes started to brim with tears. I grabbed Zo’s hand and ran towards the back of the cellar. I knew where I was supposed to go. Dad always reminded me where the exit was and how to open it, I just hoped I was tall enough to reach the switch.
“Bastards, I’ll Kill you!” My dad screamed from beyond the door as I heard painful howls that could only come from my mother.
“Hurry Zo we need to go, they will find us if we wait around, stop dragging your feet.” I yanked him back toward me as we neared the far wall. I saw dad had left a stool for me to use, I positioned Zo so I could still hold his hand while I stepped up and finally switched the hidden door open.
“Vee? Are we going to see them again?” Zeus whimpered.
“I don’t know Zo, but they are fighting so we can live. We need to live!” I stated as hot tears tore down my cheeks.
I got off the stool and pulled Zo into the hallway the door had hidden from view. I quickly pulled the door close and latched it shut. Reaching for the backpacks, my mother had prepared for us, I pulled out a flashlight and started to pull Zo down the hallway toward a safe room I knew to be there. Once inside I closed and locked the next door and flipped on the light switch. Suddenly the room shook and a plume of dust filtered in under the door. I knew the hallway had been destroyed and we were the only ones to make it here. Its what dad called the last line of defense.
“Wow!” Zo stammered as we looked around the room.
“Thank you, Dad!” I said as I saw 2 sets of bunkbeds, tons of food on shelves in a makeshift kitchen, clothes, rows of shelves stocked with god knows what, and a box that said Venus on it.
I let go of Zo’s hand and slowly walked to the box and opened it. I found a letter addressed to both of us, prepaid credit cards (4 to be exact), $5000 cash, 2 cell phones, a key, and new ID’s for both of us. In the envelope was a letter and a business card. I opened the letter:
Dear Children,
If you are reading this, then it means we have failed. Our kind is slowly fading away due to the poachers, and tonight was our night. Never return home, move out of state far away from here. Move to where there are no werewolves.
I am sorry we will not be there for either of your shifts or your coming of age. We love you both. You are all that is left. There is enough food in here for a few years, train my children, train and become strong. Train so you can live.
Beside the fridge is a keypad to the arsenal and the training rooms. Learn everything from the DVDs I provided. There are books in some of the boxes and a variety of gear you can learn to use. There are also manuals on how to fix and repair any vehicle. We have been stocking up and planning for this day from the time you were born. We only wish we could have been with you.
North of here about 500 miles, there is a town called Delton. Its small and in the country. We have contacts there who will take you in. This is their business card. You must make it there. They will be notified once this room has been locked that in a years’ time you should arrive. If you wish to stay longer, the cell phones will be available for you to reach out to them. Prepare yourselves my children. We Love you.
Always,
Sebastian Alexandria
Jamie Alexandria
Slowly I closed the letter and grabbed Zo pulling him close to me as we cried. Zeus was asleep hiccupping by the time we had finished crying. I am only a year older than him but if feels like more.
I am Venus Lynn Alexandria, or Vee for short, I stand 5’3” with an hourglass figure, and more curves than I think I need. My long black curly hair hangs just above my waist when I let it down, but the normal was a ponytail braid with two long hair picks holding everything in place. I have porcelain white skin with green hazel eyes that changed color with my moods. My face is round with a “cute button nose” as my mom had said once. I am currently 15yrs old.
I could not sleep so I went to the keypad near the fridge and typed in my birthday. The wall split apart and revealed a gym with a sparing area, a gun range, what looked like the apocalypse worthy room of weapons, and a garage with every tool and vehicle manual you could think of, as well as an engine, a 4x4 truck and two dirt bikes. On the table to my left was a tv and a bunch of DVDs and vhs tapes, all pertaining to different types of martial arts and how to use the variety of weapons provided. On the far-right wall was a garage door with a timer counting down and the word exit written above it.
I sighed and figured I would start watching the DVDs till I was tired, then go to bed. I picked up the one that was labeled Taichi.
