A Pathetic Creature

William’s P.O.V. “I request that you reconsider your decision, William. You know very well that I love you as much as I love Nathan. Not for him, but for me….. please reconsider your decision,” Alpha Adrian pleaded to me in a gentle tone. I sighed and leaned back on the backrest of my chair. “I don’t have any doubt about your love for me and Avery, Alpha. But,” I paused and took a deep breath before looking back at Alpha Adrian. He knew that it was futile to make me reconsider my decision, and I could say that he already knew what I wanted to say. “I understand, son. If I were in your shoes, I would have done the same thing,” he said in a defeated tone this time and lowered his eyes. He looked haggard and defeated because of his son. There was a thick silence in the room as none of us say a word after that. I didn’t want to stay longer in the pack house as I needed to go back to take care Avery. Moreover, Nathan’s presence here always irked me to death. “I need to go back now, Alpha,” I whispered while looking at his lowered her blankly. He just nodded but didn’t lift his head up. I stood up and bowed in front of him in respect before walking towards the door. I sighed while relaxing my shoulders as soon as I walked out of the room. I was glad that I didn’t need to come back here anymore. I should be heartbroken, but I am not. I walked towards the exit without paying attention to anyone who met in my way. I just gave them a curt nod, absentmindedly, while thinking about how to shift Avery to the Royal Pack without raising any suspicion. Avery was one of the best warriors of our pack but after facing the rejection of her fated mate in this age, it was hard to say how badly she was affected by the rejection. The Royal Pack couldn’t take in a wolf just because he or she was rejected. “William.” I stopped in my tracks and clenched my jaw in hatred and disgust when I heard Martha calling my name. I heard running footsteps towards me. "Stop!" I shouted in a cold tone while glancing over my shoulder. She stopped immediately, at a safe distance from me. “What do you want now?” I asked her in a cold tone. We were a little far from the pack house now as I was going to my car so that I could go back home. “I am going to the Night Howl Pack tomorrow in search of my mate,” she told me, and I scoffed. "What has it to do with me? Go tell Nathan about this,” I taunted her and was about to take another step forward when she shouted once again. “Wait.” I grunted in frustration and now moved towards him. “Now what?” I yelled in frustration this time. She gulped hard in fear while looking at me with wide-opened eyes in fear. This tactic of hers could work on Nathan but not on me. She knew this, but she was still trying to make me feel pity for her. Still I waited impatiently for her to open her damn mouth. “Can…. Can you… you do… a ..a favour to me?” she asked me in a fearful tone after some time, looking with the same gaze, but there was hope in her eyes. I didn’t say anything but waited for her to finish. I wanted to know what she wanted after doing so much damage to Avery and me. “Ca… can you tal… talk to Nathan an… and tell him th.. that I am sorry?” she said further in the same tone after a few seconds. I narrowed my eyes while trying to understand what she requested. I couldn’t believe that she asked me to talk with Nathan on her behalf. I burst into laughter while looking at her with a mocking gaze. She just blinked timidly, faking innocence, and it truly infuriated me to the death. “Go to hell!" I yelled at her angrily in the end, and I stormed towards my car. Only Nathan could be fooled by her act of innocence, not me. I opened the door of the car, hopped on the driver’s seat, and closed the door with a bang. It was when I realized that there were some fresh blood drops on my palms, indicating that I had dug my nails deeper inside my palms at some point. I took a deep breath while closing my eyes. I couldn’t forgive Nathan for what he did to Avery. Even though he was my best friend all my life… I just couldn’t. I didn’t want him to acknowledge my sister as his mate, but he shouldn’t be so ruthless in rejecting her. It had been two months and she was still in a coma. Dr. Helen said that she would wake up any time but couldn’t tell when she would wake up. I opened my eyes and took a deep breath again and exhaled slowly. I started the engine and then drove towards home. I felt pressure at the back of my mind after some time, signalling that someone was trying to mind-link me. I opened the mind link and let the person contact me. “Where are you?” my father asked me in a hurried tone, and my feet immediately pressed the accelerator. “What happened? Is Avery okay?” I asked him anxiously while increasing the speed of the car. “She… she…. Just moved her head a little, son…. She… she is… she… she is still in pain,” he told me in a choked tone, and my grip tightened on the wheel to the extent that my knuckles turned white. The urge to kill Nathan was so strong this time, and Pete, my wolf’s anger, was adding fuel to the fire. “Your mother has informed Dr. Helen… you come back soon,” he said further, and I tried to suppress my anger and anxiety. “I will be there in five, dad…. B… but please don’t …. Don’t tell anyone … not even Alpha Adrian about this,” I answered him. He was silent for a few seconds, but it didn’t bother me. “Okay,” he answered before cutting off the mind-link. If I come to know that Avery has any ability or anything that can affect her normal life, I swear to the Moon Goddess that I will kill Nathan with my bare hands. Future alpha or not, for me, he was nothing but a pathetic wolf now. “Let’s leave this pack after Avery wakes up,” Peter said in a determined tone. “We will,” I answered him in a cold and determined tone while looking at the road with blank eyes. Soon, I parked my car in front of our house and quickly got out. I ran straight upstairs to Avery’s room. “How is she?” I asked in a hurried and anxious tone when I saw Helen examining her. She didn’t answer me immediately, as she was still examining her. My mother came to me, and I immediately wrapped my hands around her shoulders, taking her in my embrace. She was crying silently, and I could feel trembling in her body. My father was sitting on the floor on the other side of the bed, holding Avery’s hand. My father was a ruthless beta but a helpless father when it comes to Avery and me. I could see that he was about to shed some tears now. I rubbed the back of my mother to comfort her, but my heart was now about to jump out of my chest at any time in anticipation. I was so nervous and scared at the same time. After some time, Helen finished her examination and stood up from the bed. “The stimulation that she showed earlier is a sign that she will open her eyes within a week or less,” Helen said with a smile on her face. “O Goddess!” I exclaimed in relief, and my mother trembled hard in my embrace. “I have checked her vitals. There is nothing wrong with her body. Let’s wait for a few more days,” she said further, and I nodded to her with a small smile of relief on my lips this time. “Th… then why did she have a painful expression at that time?” my father suddenly asked in a trembling voice. We all looked at him, and I looked back at Helen for the answer. “That has nothing to do with any physical discomfort, Beta Edward. She is about to regain her consciousness. So…. Uhhh,” Helen paused and looked at me with some hesitance. “What is it, Helen?” I asked her this time. She sighed and looked at me apologetically. “As soon as she regains her consciousness, her last memories of th… that birth… day party will be the first to hit her memories,” she answered me in a low and apologetic tone. My grip on my mother tightened immediately. “I am sorry, William, but this is inevitable. She has to go bear that pain for some time,” she finished in the same tone and lowered her head. “It’s okay, son… it’s okay… your sister is strong enough to deal with this pain. Just trust her,” my mother comforted me in a choked tone. “I trust her, mom…. I trust her,” I answered her in a low tone, still rubbing her back, but my eyes were now glued to Avery’s sleeping face. She was looking better than what she had become two months ago. “Now it’s time to go and meet that pathetic creature,” Pete said in a cold tone at the back of my mind. “Yeah,” I answered him in a cold tone.
