LEIA POV
My face was starting to hurt from how hard I was sneering. I shouldn’t be sneering after just meeting my mate. I should have a stupid love-struck look that would make me want to rip my skin off. “What… what is it that you need, Master Sargeant Leia?” Delta Oscar asked and continued to let me drag him, then I stopped since I didn’t know where the hell I was going. I only knew one office here and it was in the opposite direction to the one I had taken.
“The control room is straight ahead and to your right.” He began to pass me and I let go of him. Did I just drag a wolf around like he was some puppet? “We needed to talk to him... at first. Then you used him to run away from our mate.” Sian hissed. “Delta Oscar?” I followed closely behind him so all he had to do to acknowledge me was turn his head. “I’d like to apologize for….” Wolfnapping you? Is that what I did?
“For manhandling me?” I swear he almost giggled but managed to stifle it. “I am a shewolf, Delta Oscar. I am apologizing for handling you. I don’t need to be a man to do anything.” Truth. Instead of whining about how I was emasculating him like I thought he would, he smiled at me. “I bet. Your mate is going to have his hands full.” I almost handled him again, but then he whispered. “In a good way.” Considering what I now knew about my mate, I still felt like handling him.
I managed to take what Oscar the not grouch said as a compliment since he wasn’t pervy or disrespectful about it. At this point, out of all the high-ranking members of Dark Mist, I liked Delta Oscar best. He wasn’t a d**k and had a personality that wasn’t all “Me male wolf, look at me!”. For now, he’s on my neutral list. A very big accomplishment on his part.
My mate hasn’t even gotten on my s**t list. At this point, he’s not worth spitting on if on fire. Everyone starts there and he hasn't done anything to deserve any better. “Our mate shouldn’t be there.” Sian said nervously. “No but he is. I have to say, he isn’t at all what I expected.” That was stopping me from going full f everyone and rejecting him in front of his snooty father.
You would think it would push me to do it, but it made me wonder and feel uncertain. I didn’t like feeling like that. Alpha Paul is very attractive, like all wolves. Maybe that’s why the boy next door face with baby blue eyes and a charming smile doesn’t impress me. I’m surrounded by very attractive and capable wolves who don’t whine or evade their responsibilities.
As his mate, he has a responsibility to me. If he doesn’t want any of this, then he’ll have to come face me and reject me like the damn Alpha he’s supposed to be. “Maybe we have a very bad first impression of him?” Sian argued in his favor. “Putting aside the fact that…. HOLLY s**t! He is definitely on my s**t list!” I stood up and startled everyone in the room who was quietly watching the monitors.
“Is something wrong?” Delta Oscar asked as I left the room and went in search of my soon to be ex-mate. “The Alpha of this pack wasn’t here to receive me because he was at his mate’s pack helping her move here.” That important fact had slipped my mind. Now that it was back, there was no way I could play whatever stupid game he was playing. I needed answers. I stomped my way to the pack house and approached a random wolf. “Alpha’s office.” I grunted and the wolf pointed to a hallway on the other side of the room. “Last door on the right.” I nodded in thanks and slowed my steps.
Sian was quiet, she understood what had set me off. She was right, I had a bad impression of him from the start. Before I even knew he was my mate. I was already irritated with him for choosing the day I was to arrive to move his mate to his pack. That's why he didn't acknowledge me. He took a chosen mate and, for some reason, instead of having the balls to tell me and reject me, he’s pretending I’m not his mate.
He felt the same pull I did, the spark of excitement at the scent, sound, and sight of his mate. I managed to suppress the need to run into his arms when he went subzero, but that doesn’t mean the need isn’t there. Then again, he has his chosen mate, someone he wants to be with. That thought had me barging into the Alpha’s office a little too boisterously.
“Master Sargeant!” Alpha Daniel blustered as he placed his hand on his chest. I almost killed him, maybe next time. “Why is this man always around? If anyone ever needed to be catfished it was him. A sugar baby would keep him out of our hair.” Sian complained. I was about to ask Alpha Daniel if he was on social media, but I noticed he wasn’t the only extra body in the room. Paul’s shocked face was trained on me, but his eyes darted to a very curvy raven-haired shewolf to my right. Her icy blue eyes were slightly widened.
“It’s okay father. I asked Sargeant Master Leia to come and meet Natalia, my mate.” At first, I thought he was f*****g with me because no he f*****g didn't call me to meet his mate. I searched for any amusement or a hint or a smirk but found none. Then again, there was no regret or hesitation either. This was his way of confirming what he didn't have the balls to say, a rejection was going to happen once he found them. Then again, I'm not missing mine and striking first is usually the way to go.
He had made a decision that would affect both of us all on his own. Without even considering me. If we were alone, he would get his wish right now. Since I’m doubtful snow-white here knows who I am, I’ll save her from witnessing that drama. She wasn’t the one I was mated with. “Nice to meet you Natalia. You are very lucky to have a mate that would risk disrespecting the werewolf council just to help you pack.” Where the hell did that come from?
Yes, I had managed to bewilder Alpha Paul, who looked like his eyes were going to roll out of his head, onto the table and down to the floor. Alpha Daniel looked like he was chocking on his tongue, another a plus. What made me feel like a real jerk was when I turned to see Natalia’s wide eyes. They might be icy blue but she looked like she was going to cry.
That would have made a man stop but I was in woman scorned mode. “Master Sargent Leia, Natalia is going to be the Luna of this pack. She is the daughter of the Beta from…” I held my hand up, silencing him. “I live in the real world where our actions have consequences. I have no issues with the future Luna of this pack. It’s your Alpha who needs to face his responsibilities.” I gave him a knowing look and walked out before they could register what happened.
I wanted to kick myself in the tail for giving Natalia a hard time. For using her to force Alpha Paul to face me. His actions were screaming what he wanted from me, nothing. There was one thing missing, his words. The sooner we exchanged those words, the faster we could go to being just two wolves working on a common goal. Can I even do that at this point?
What I felt when I first caught his scent on the Delta was… tingly but now that I’ve seen him, that butterfly bullcrap is brewing. Which wouldn’t be a bad thing if he hadn’t just introduced me to his mate and future Luna as Sargeant Master Leia. Yeah, I'm not going to throw myself blindly into the mate bond hoping he changes his mind. That doesn’t sound like me, so why should I act out of character?
As I stormed back into my room, I began to feel pitiful. No matter what I thought or what my mouth said, every inch of me wanted to run back to him and claim him. “Stop trying to make me go back!” I growled at Sian. “We need to talk to him! There has to be an explanation. Look at Mel and her hunter mate!” She blurted out, reaching for straws. “Look at Win and Dev, who both rejected their sorry ass first mates.” I retorted.
The council claims that approximately eighty percent of wolves find their fated mates, claim them, and live happily ever after. Out of the other twenty percent are wolves that lose their mates and find second chances or take a chosen. I never imagined I would find myself outside of the eighty percent, but it seems that it’s my fate to be part of the exception.
There are always those of us who want more than what the moon goddess offers. Or maybe what she’s offering isn’t as enticing as the alternatives. Stripping off my clothes, I plopped down on my bed face first. Growling into the bed, I let out a deep breath and then turned onto my back. “Either way. We need to talk to him. ALONE.” Sian asserted.
“I agree that we need to talk to him, just the two of us. The sooner the better.” Maybe not for the same reasons my wolf had, but I didn’t need to tell her that. “Though… I’m done searching him out.” I wasn’t sure how that was going to work. We had a very important and timely conversation pending. He was currently avoiding me, his mate, while placating me, Master Sargeant Leia.
KNOCK. KNOCK.KNOCK. Only one brute knocks on my door so damn loudly. Throwing on a bathrobe, I walked out of my bedroom and opened the door. Herc stood there with a bottle of whiskey. “I felt neglected all day. You didn’t even join us for breakfast.” Oh yeah…. I hijacked the Delta and skipped it. “Stop moping and bring the bottle over.” I grinned and patted the counter while I reached for two glasses. Perfect timing Herc.
