“Don’t worry, Aunt Mabel,” my lips curled with sarcasm “I’ll decide if I want to pass on my rights to the company after marriage but come to think of it… the Company is named after my parents ‘Hart and Gloria’ so why are you so concerned? That means I can do as I please. So, stay off,”.
“Cassidy, you’re making a big mistake,” she yelled.
“Allow me to make them, dearest Aunt,” I yelled back.
I noticed that Rose was lurking around so I called her attention “Rose, can you please call security to take them out of my property this instance?”.
Rose didn’t say anything nor did she move to do what I asked her. Rather, she kept fiddling with her fingers and refused to meet my eyes.
“Oh, darling,” Aunt Mabel laughed manically “You still don’t have an idea, do you? Do you think you’re big now and you can do whatsoever you want? But come down from your high horses and listen to me, this isn’t the medieval times when servants are die-hard loyalists. Nowadays, you can buy them with a few pennies and not like they had an option… this place doesn’t pay as much as it used to,”.
“That’s not true,” my eyes filled with tears as I stared at Rose. “Rose will never betray me. She’s been our housekeeper for more than a decade,”.
“But she has already. Her daughter needed an important surgery and I helped her with the money in return for this. C’mon darling niece,” she grabbed my chin “Sign the documents unless you want to see the other side of Aunt Mabel,”.
“Do you worst,” I retorted hating the tear that rolled down my cheek “You can have a gun pointed at my head and I won’t sign those documents,”?
“Fine,” Aunt Mabel shrugged as she let go of my chin “Then I have no other option. Security,” she screamed.
Immediately, the door opened and the head security of the villa entered the room and ran straight to Aunt Mabel.
“Arrest her,” she commanded.
A sob shook my body as the guard ran to me and immediately seized me. He blew his whistle and three other men entered the room and held me down. I wanted all of this to be a bad joke. I couldn’t believe that my Aunt bought all of them.
“C’mon, Miss Hart,” the lawyer came towards me wearing a smile “Sign it and we won’t have to go through all this hassle,”
He turned and handed a pen to my Aunt too and then tried to force one into my hands which I refused.
“I won’t sign it,” I shouted as my lips quivered “Aunt Mabel, is this how you intend to pay my parents kindness? Aren’t you afraid that their ghost will haunt you for hurting their child?”.
I knew Aunt Mabel was superstitious and that was the only thing I could come up with at such short notice. I noticed her hand shake as she stared at me. But it faded quickly as a new resolve entered her eyes and she walked towards where I was being pinned by the guards and landed a slap on my cheeks.
“For a little girl, you sure know how to spew nonsense from that mouth of yours,” Aunt Mabel fumed.
“Quick, hold her hands and force her to sign the documents,” she instructed the guards ignoring my pleas “And make sure she fingerprints too,”.
The guards pried my hands open as they forced the pen into it. I was small and powerless against them so there was not much I could do. They guided my hand as I was forced to scribble my name from one page of the document to another until the last page. I was about to write my name on it when the door opened and a familiar voice reached my ears.
“What are you doing to Cass? Let her go this instance?”
It was Liam no doubt but I was as surprised as my Aunt as to what he was doing here. After the incident last night, he was the last person I was expecting to see here.
On second thoughts, maybe he was working with my Aunt Mabel and wanted a share from H&G too. But he had nothing to gain from it. Although he was an illegitimate child of the Fuller he was well respected and had power.
“Hello Liam,” My aunt blocked his path “I’m sorry you had to meet all of this but I assure you, this is a family affair. Can you not interfere? Will be done quickly and you’ll see your fiancée,”.
Liam arched his brows at Aunt Mabel as his lips were pressed in disdain. He walked past her to where I was still being held by the guards. One by one, he removed their hands from me until they all left me then he helped me to my feet.
“Cassidy is my fiancée and I’ll be damned if I’ll let any of you bully her. Why would you want to force her into doing what she doesn’t want to do? What part of No! do you not understand?” he fumed.
“Liam… we asked nicely but she refused and I had to resort to force. You know how stubborn she can be,” Aunt Mabel defended.
“Just leave,” Liam growled “Every one of you leave except you want me to go extreme too?”.
I could see the shock in both my Aunt's and Cousin’s eyes. Everyone knew that Liam never pays attention to me. I’ve been ridiculed several times and called a ceremonial wife to be so it came as a shock to them that he was defending me.
“Leave now, Mabel,” he said instead “Else I’ll be forced to call the police and we both know that’s the last thing. You need right now,”.
“Let’s just leave, Mabel,” the lawyer advised “That is no mere threat,”.
I watched as she stared at the unsigned documents and then back at me and Liam and I knew that whatever hatred she had for me before had been doubled.
“Enjoy the fame while it last but Cassidy Hart, this is not the last of me,” she hissed and pranced out of the house the lawyer and her daughter in her wake.
Finally, it was just me and Liam in the room.
“Wow, that was enthralling,” he sighed in relief.
I pursed my lips as I stared at him, trying to read his emotions. Perhaps if I had not seen him on the bed with my best friend last night, I would have fallen totally for his act but I knew better.
“Are you alright dear?” he tried to hold me.
“Please Liam,” I took some steps backwards giving him a dismissive wave “There’s no audience again, away with the act already. It’s scaring me,”.
His jaw twitched with anger that was quickly replaced with guilt in his eyes.
“C’mon babe,” he begged “I know last night was kind of chaotic but it meant nothing to me. I accept that I am a cheat and it’s my fault but please can you forgive me and give me another chance? I swear I’ll never do it again,”.
His act was flawless and I know the weak and timid Cassidy would have fallen for it but not anymore.
“You’ll give Hollywood a run for their money with that perfect act of yours, Liam. You and Tricia should be co-stars since you’re lovers,”.
“Babe, please,” he pleaded again.
“If you think I will fall for your tricks again, Liam then you better read the room. I am no longer the gullible and sweet Cassidy you’re used to. Please save yourself from the embarrassment and just leave already. But thank you for helping me with my aunt, I owe you one,”.
His forehead knitted with sweat as he stared solemnly at me and in a flash, he went on his knees.
