Chapter nine: Into the lions den

I didn’t have enough information, but Kevin was pressuring me, and what I had was enough to stir the public. As I made my way to the office, my heart raced with a mix of fear and determination. I knew the risks involved in publishing the article exposing Alexander Blackwood's ties to the mafia, but I also knew that it was the right thing to do. The truth had to be brought to light, no matter the consequences. I wished I had more time to investigate further, but it was all I had, and it was time to publish it. I walked the streets quickly, I wanted to get to the office as fast as possible. But as I stepped out onto the busy street near my office, I felt a chill run down my spine. Something wasn't right. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end as I scanned the crowd, my senses on high alert. And then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw him. Alexander Blackwood. He was standing across the street, his gaze fixed on me with an intensity that sent shivers all over my body, and they weren’t the pleasant ones. I tried to ignore him, to push past the fear that threatened to consume me, but it was no use. I knew that I was in danger. Without a second thought, I turned and bolted down the street, my heart pounding in my chest as I ran for my life. But it was no use. I could hear his footsteps echoing behind me, drawing closer with every passing second. And then, just as I reached the entrance to the office building, he caught up to me. Strong arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me back with a force that knocked the breath from my lungs. I struggled and fought, but it was no use. Alexander Blackwood had me in his grasp, and there was nowhere to run. It was early in the morning, so the few people that saw me didn’t bat an eye and continued on their way. Nobody wanted to get involved in a problem that didn’t concern them. "Let me go!" I screamed, thrashing against his hold with all the strength I could muster. But he only tightened his grip, his expression cold and unyielding as he dragged me towards his waiting car. "Quiet, Emily," he hissed, his voice low and dangerous. "You've meddled in things that don't concern you, and now you're going to pay the price." I froze for a second. I knew then that my worst fears had come true. I was being kidnapped by Alexander Blackwood himself, and there was nothing I could do to stop it. Even if I continued to fight him, he was too strong. He got me inside the car and warned me to stay quiet. As we drove off into the night, the weight of my own mortality hung heavy over me. My life is on a string now. I didn’t know what he wanted from me, but it must not be something good. But even in the face of uncertainty and fear, I refused to give up hope. I was a journalist, a seeker of truth, and I would not rest until justice was served. No matter what trials and tribulations lay ahead, I was determined to see this through to the end. For justice, for truth, and for all those who had been victimized by Alexander Blackwood's insatiable greed. I knew I was in serious trouble, my curiosity had gotten me into several problems, but they were never serious. Now I was in the car with someone that could kill me any second, but I refused to let panic take hold. Instead, I focused on gathering my courage, preparing myself for whatever lay ahead. Finally, the car came to a stop in a secluded alleyway. It was the best place to commit a crime. No one would find me here, my lifeless body would probably rot until they found me, if they ever did. My heart pounded in my chest as the door opened, and Alexander Blackwood's driver emerged. Alexander was next to me, he first gestured for me to follow. I was not going to go to my execution willingly, so I tried to fight him, but it was useless. He made me realize that. With a deep breath, I stepped out of the car and faced him, my eyes narrowing with determination. "What do you want from me?" I demanded, my voice steady despite the fear gnawing at my insides. Alexander regarded me with a cool detachment, his gaze piercing as he studied me intently. "You've been poking around where you don't belong, Emily," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "And now, you're going to tell me everything you know." I squared my shoulders, refusing to let him intimidate me. "I know enough," I replied, my voice ringing with conviction. "I know about your ties to the mafia, about the illegal activities you've been involved in." He took me to the inside of the building. I guess that he didn't want a passerby to see us and snitched that the infamous billionaire was there with a redhead. That could link him to me. I didn't look around, I just felt how he yanked me into an office. It wasn't anything extraordinary, especially not for someone like Alexander. For a moment, there was silence between us as Alexander's expression hardened, his eyes flashing with anger. I thought he was going to take a gun from behind the desk and put a bullet between my eyes, but then, to my surprise, he let out a cold laugh, the sound sending a chill down my spine. "You think you know everything, don't you, Emily?" he said, his voice dripping with malice. "But you don't know half of it. You see, I'm not just involved with the mafia. I am the capo." My blood ran cold at his words, the gravity of the situation sinking in. If what he said was true, then Alexander Blackwood was not just a businessman with shady connections. He was a dangerous criminal, a man with the power to destroy lives with a single word. But even as fear threatened to consume me, I refused to back down. If this was my last day alive, I would go down giving him a hell of a ride. "I don't care who you are," I spat, my voice trembling with defiance. "I won't let you get away with your crimes. I'll expose you for the monster you truly are." Alexander's eyes narrowed, his expression darkening with rage. "You have no idea what you're up against, Emily," he growled, advancing towards me with a menacing glare. "But you'll learn soon enough. And when you do, you'll wish you had never crossed paths with me." “What are you going to do to me?” Was all I could ask. I already knew the answer. He was going to kill me. “You will stay here, nice and quiet.” His deep voice answered me. “You will behave, and if you don’t you will bear the consequences.” As Alexander's words hung in the air, a cold shiver ran down my spine, and I felt my heart race with a mixture of fear and anger. "You can't be serious," I retorted, my voice trembling with disbelief and defiance. "You can't just kidnap me and expect me to stay quiet." But Alexander remained stoic, his demeanor unwavering as he stepped closer, his presence dominating the room. "Oh, but I can, Emily," he replied, his tone sending a chill down my spine. "You've become too much of a liability, too dangerous to be left to your own devices. So, from now on, you're mine." Every fiber of my being screamed in protest, but I refused to let him see my fear. Instead, I squared my shoulders and met his gaze head-on. "I won't let you do this," I declared, my voice ringing with defiance. "I'll fight you every step of the way. You think you are the devil? Darling you have no idea who you are up agains, I will make your life a living hell.” Alexander's lips curled into a cold smile, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "You're welcome to try," he taunted. "But I'm afraid you won't be leaving this place anytime soon. You're my prisoner now, Emily, and there's nothing you can do about it." Fury boiled within me, and without thinking, I grabbed the nearest object—a vase filled with wilting flowers—and hurled it at him with all my strength. The vase shattered against the wall, but Alexander barely flinched, his expression remaining unchanged. Boy did I had bad aim. He let out a breath, he was furious by my unexpected but pathetic act of defiance. "Fine," he said, his voice cold and controlled. "Have it your way. But know this, Emily: you may think you're strong, but you're no match for me. Sooner or later, you'll realize that resistance is futile. And when that day comes, I'll be waiting." I was not going to give him the satisfaction that he had broke me. No, I was far stronger than that. He turned around and left the office. He was probably tired of having to deal with me. I could try to run. I was alone now, or so I thought, until two gorilas entered the office. They gestured me to go somewhere else. Could I fight them? I could try, but that would get me in more problems. I have to deal with what I have right now, and the best thing to do is to chose my battles carefully. You will see Blackwood, I’m going to show your true colors to the world.
