Harper’s POV
‘We can find them later, we don’t need to meet them tonight,’ I said to my alpha wolf Caldra as I was fighting her for control. Carson went ahead of me with a few wolves following him while the others stayed behind.
‘Shift back, give me control,’ I told Caldra but she didn’t. I knew what we were smelling was the scent of our mate but she was acting too rash. We were here to do one thing and I wanted to get that done with no distraction, mates were huge distractions.
The weight of my body was working against me since Caldra was moving forward. I could only dig my claws into the ground and push back so I wouldn’t move. I had no control other than that.
‘You don’t want to be alone Harper,’ Said Caldra, growling.
‘I’m not alone,’ I replied.
My pack was enough for me and I felt I could be a better alpha to them without a mate. I didn’t need to be romantically loved by anyone to not feel alone.
‘I spoke to Sarah.’ Carson said over mindlink. ‘There might be Blue Eclipse pack members coming. She’s fine with us collecting the resources we need as long as we don’t go past the bonfire.’
‘I’m not abiding by Sarah’s orders,’ Caldra replied. ‘I don’t care who I have to fight. If the Blue Eclipse pack wants a battle then they’ll get one.’ Carson was worried about our relations with Sarah’s pack and so was I but as usual, mates got in the way of something.
The overwhelming scent that I could only describe as sweetened rainfall was getting closer and Caldra was getting more excited and impatient by it. I had no control anymore because of my wolf’s determination to devore its source. Caldra raced towards the bonfire. When Sara saw that we were heading past it she shifted and tackled us.
We couldn’t communicate verbally over mindlink since we weren’t a part of the same pack so Caldra couldn’t tell her that we had found our mate. Sarah was only so concerned about us entering our rival's territory because her pack was strong allies with them. Sarah was a childhood friend of mine before her pack and our rivals became strong allies. We were still on good terms with their pack but have distanced ourselves because of it.
Caldra fought Sara’s wolf, she was an ordinary wolf so it didn’t take long to get her to submit. I couldn’t smell the scent of my mate anymore. I sprinted off when I saw wolves from my rival pack in the distance.
‘Shift so we’re not as noticeable,’ I told my wolf.
Caldra let us shift back into our human form. I panted and saw a city in the distance. “f**k,” I swore. “They’re there aren’t they?”
‘Go,’ Caldra said.
We had already made this much trouble so it should at least be for something. I walked to the city and stopped outside of a hotel. If my intuition was right, my mate was inside this building. I sighed and got a hotel room. If anything, I needed to rest to clear my head.
Once I got settled in the hotel room the scent was back. My eyes darted to the doorknob as it slightly turned as if someone was trying to open it. It didn’t take long for light knocks to be heard.
“Um… Hello?” Her voice had a hold on my heart.
‘Let her in! Do something,’ Caldra pleaded restlessly.
After the mess Caldra caused I might as well see what my mate looked like. I took a step closer to the door and sighed before making the rest of my way to the door. “You sound unsure,” I said.
It took a while for her to respond, “I am unsure.” She chuckled. “You must be more unsure since you’re not opening the door.” Her voice was so soft and feminine. It made her come off as a lot more innocent and pure than I deserved.
“There’s nothing wrong with a little mystery,” I said, pressing my head to the door.
“Do you have short hair?” She asked.
“No, why?”
“Aren’t mysteries meant to be cracked?”
“The best ones can’t,” I replied.
“Your hair is an uncommon color and you’re tall.” Both were correct but I didn’t have short hair. “Well am I wrong?” I didn’t answer. “I can just go, I’m sorry to bother you.”
“You do too,” I said and laid my hand on the doorknob, contemplating if I’d turn it or not.
“What?”
“You have an uncommon hair color too but it’s natural, unlike mine.” I chuckled. She didn’t say anything so I slowly opened the door to see if I was right. When my gaze landed on her I felt paralyzed. She was beautiful.
“L-looks like we were both right,” she mumbled. She had glowing brown skin, curly white hair that reached her collar bone.
I pulled her in by her waist and closed the door. Carson was right, I should have thought this through. I didn’t want a relationship or a luna. I needed to make that clear but I didn’t want to be rejected. I didn’t care about that before but looking at the woman before me, now I do.
“You’re a dragon,” I pointed out my observation based on her aura.
Dragons weren’t the most common species around here. Most lived in their kingdom. She was the second dragon I had ever met.
“I am. I’m not the best at telling what someone is by their aura. I can tell that you’re some kind of shifter so I’m going to assume you're a werewolf?”
“Correct.”
“Yeah, the most common kind shifter.” She sat down on the floor.
‘Alpha where are you? We might as well come back another time for the plants. Some of the others collected a few while we were fighting the Blue Eclipse but there are a lot more now,’ Carson informed me.
I stared at my mate as she tapped her hand against her thigh and hummed with her eyes closed. I had never found myself so attracted to someone before. Could I just leave now? What was she thinking and what did she want from me? “You don’t have to sit on the floor,” I said as I sat down on the bed.
She opened her eyes and looked up at me. “Yeah?” she chuckled cutely and stood up. She sat down next to me and took her jacket off. A tattoo on her lower arm was revealed, she was in the Blue Eclipse pack. She was a dragon shifter so I didn’t expect her to be a part of any pack. Her being in our rival pack could have actually made things easier for me. It’d be easier to let her go as I wanted.
“This is going to be a weird question,” she said hesitantly. “Do you have a rank in your pack?”
“No,” I lied. I didn’t want her to know who I was just yet.
“Oh…”
I lifted her head up by her chin which made her blush. “You're disappointed?” Touching her sent waves of enjoyment through me.
“Yes but not because I care if you have a rank,” she answered. “My parents are just insistent that my mate be an alpha. I thought you might have been since I can tell you’re a born alpha.” They’d be satisfied if I were the alpha of any other pack. Why was I disappointed? This should be exactly what I wanted, we can’t be together in a serious capacity. I never wanted a committed relationship. “What pack are you in?”
“Is it okay if we don’t get personal?” I asked as my hand traveled down from her chin to her waist.
“Yeah,” she smiled. “Are names personal?”
“A bit, there are a lot of other things we can call each other,” I replied.
I watched as her eyes clouded over, someone was mindlinking her. “I have to go.” Those words injured me. She stood up. “Is there any way I can contact you? I could give you my number.”
“Stay,” I said as I grabbed her hand in mine. The hold of her hand was electric.
“I can’t,” she looked down at our locked hands. “...My parents are worried because we have trespassers on our territory. It’s dangerous for me to be out.”
“I can protect you.” My pack wouldn’t hurt her while she’s with me. “I promise you’ll be fine.”
“I want to be here with you but they’ll come looking for me,” she warned.
“Then let them and you’ll leave when they come to get you but if they don’t come then one night?” I asked, staring into her eyes for miles.
“Just one?” She chuckled.
“One for now. I specifically want tonight.” I smirked. “After all there’s still a mystery to solve, isn’t there?”
“Yes, but my pack’s worried,” her gaze was still fixed on our hands. “I don’t usually do things like this.” She looked away.
“There’s a first time for everything, Doll, one night.”
She bit her lip. “Okay, Indigo.” she referred to me by the color of my head.
I laughed. “I didn’t approve of that name.”
“And I didn’t approve of Doll,” she laughed and it was filled with beauty. “I actually don’t mind telling you my name.”
“Tell me in the morning,” I said as I pulled her gently back down next to me on the bed.
“Tell me yours in the morning,” she said through a smile.
‘Harper,’ Carson said.
‘Go back to the packhouse with the others. We’ll collect the rest of whatever we need another time.’ I instructed.
‘Understood…’ Carson didn’t further question me since I was his alpha.
“Is everything okay?” My mate asked me.
“Yeah, I was just letting someone know I wouldn’t be back tonight,” I said.
“So… what are we going to do until the morning?”
“We can start with this,” I whispered as I pulled her close and my lips pressed against hers.
