“Mother! Father!” Darlene came running downstairs so excited like a little child who had just got some candy
“What is it that has you so excited?” Tracy asked Darlene and she was smiling
“Mother! Father! I was given the scholar ship to study at University of California” She said sounding excited
Tracy’s smile slowly faded after hearing the name of the university. “Darlene, we have been through this already. You can’t go to that university. Why don’t you choose anything close?” Tracy said continuing setting up the table
“But I just want this university” Darlene shrugged her shoulders looking at her father
“Father please talk to mother” Darlene pleaded with her father who seemed to be busy without paying attention to them
“My answer is still no Darlene! I am not sending my daughter to such a far away place, there’s no one there you know. What happens when you fall sick? Who will take care of you? Am not allowing you to go anywhere that far away from hom” Tracy said and turned away from Darlene,
Darlene looked at her mother’s face and eyes she was really serious, Darlene rushed out of the room in tears going back upstairs to her room.
Tracy put down rhea plate she had in in hands and sighed. “You must think am being unfair to her.” Tracy said as she tried to fight back her tears
“You are only doing what’s best for her. That’s what mothers do!” James said standing up coming close to her
“What should I do? I feel like I am pushing her away but also am scared what might happen to her” James said holding her from behind
“Honey! You only doing what’s right. But also think about how she has lived her life ever since she was born, you need to let her grow up we can always visit her” James said letting go of Tracy
“Why don’t you talk to her?” James added on
“No James I already told you what I think” Tracy said to her husband
“Then don’t blame anyone when she hates you for standing in the way of her goals” James said walking out of the house.
Darlene went to her room and cried herself to sleep and didn’t have dinner that night. Tracy went to Darlene and looked at how her baby girl was grown.
Darlene was Ariel’s true image she had green eyes dark brown hair and a warm skin tone while Tracy was the opposite. “Am sorry that am so selfish but am scared of losing you” Tracy whispered to Darlene “But if it means that I might lose you love I would rather not risk it” She added on kissing Darlene’s forehead and tucking her nicely in bed before walking out of her room.

The next day Darlene woke up and went downstairs as usual. She found breakfast was already set on the table and went to sit quietly after greeting Tracy and James.
“What are you doing today?” James asked Darlene
“Am thinking of going to help Mrs Williams later after I finishing sending out applications” Darlene said playing around with the spoon in her hands
“Well you don’t have to do that. Tracy?” James said to his wife
Tracy smiled and looked at Darlene, “Because you and me will be going to organise for your trip to Los Angeles” Tracy said to Darlene who could not believe what her mother was saying
“What? Really?” Darlene said turning to her parents all excited
“Yes sweetheart! But there’s a catch to it” Tracy said to her with a straight face
“Yes!” Darlene turned to Tracy with anxiety written all over her face
“That we will travel with you and also check where you will be staying” Tracy said and Darlene agreed going to hug her mother and father
“Thank you so much!” She said, Darlene smiled knowing that she was going away from her hometown.

For a month Darlene and Tracy organised for her trip and everything was in place for Darlene to travel out without having to worry about anything. They arrived at the university after nine hours of flying and two hours driving. Darlene stood there admiring the beautiful place, she could not believe what she was seeing the building was big and many people were being dropped off by their parents.
“Darlene do you want to check your room?” James asked her after she stood there without moving
“Darlene?” James called her.
“Sweetheart!” Tracy went close shaking her that’s when Darlene came back to reality
“She obviously can’t believe that she’s here” Tracy jokingly said to James as they all laughed.
Darlene held her mother’s hand as they walked in to the student hall, “it says here that it is suppose to be Blazer hall” Darlene said looking at the map in her hands.
“Oh, it’s right over there” James said to Tracy and Darlene, they walked into the common room she met a woman who looked like she was a stripper. Her make up was so heavy and her nose was pierced.
“Darlene Smith?” She said looking at Darlene and her parents
“yes, how do you know me?” Darlene asked her brows raised
“Yes, you are the new girl who will be sharing the room with you by the way my name is Natasha” She said extending her hand to Darlene
“Nice to meet you! Can we see the room?” Darlene said to Natasha who nodded her head
“Sure, please go ahead” Natasha said to Darlene who walked in the toom and checked it.
“It’s not that bad! I can manage” Darlene said trying to convince her mother after seeing all the different posters of Men
“Sweetie why don’t you change the room? I mean look at the nastiness of this room” Tracy said without bothering that
“Honey!” James said through gritted teeth to stop his wife
“Mother I will be fine! I will make sure you don’t have to worry about anything” Darlene said to her mother
“Come on honey we should get going!” James told his wife pulling her away from the room.
They all walked back to the car as Tracy complained about the room and how she could rent a house for Darlene if she wanted but James said that it would be better if she got to have friends.
“Please take care of yourself” Tracy held on to Darlene’s hand
“Mother Please I will be fine!” Darlene said, Tracy looked at Darlene and hugged her, “Call me everyday at 7am to let me know you are fine, okay sweetie?” Tracy said
“Okay mummy! I need to go back to the room” Darlene said trying to run away from her parents. The three of them hugged each other and said bye. The drove away as Darlene waved at them.
She turned to the university she got the life she wanted but can she manage being away from her friend and family? Well only time will tell Darlene thought to herself after taking a deep breath
