Authors POV…
Fiona was surprised to hear someone knocking on her door late at night. She was not expecting any visitors; she hardly had any.
“Let me get it,” she told Chan as she walked away from the compartment and went over to open the door. She could not believe her eyes.
“Hugo!” She growled, along with her wolf. If it were not for the sake of comportment and the man standing behind her, she would have attacked this i***t with everything in her.
“Fiona, I know you’re mad at me, but please, just listen. I would not have come here if I had nothing good to say to you.”
His breath reeked of alcohol. As always, she would hardly find him sober. How was she so blind not to have noticed all these things when they were still together?
“What do you want?”
“I’m done playing games, Fiona. I swear it. I dumped Laurel for good after I realized she was the enemy. Our affair would have never even started in the first place if not for her manipulation. I know you might think me stupid for coming here despite everything, but I figured it was worth a shot; I am sorry, Fiona. Now that you’re gone, I realize how stupid I was for ever letting you go. I have never missed anyone like this before. I should have never let Laurel take control of me. Forgive me, Fiona.”
Fiona was taken aback. Today was just full of surprises. “Is this some kind of joke?”
“It’s not. After our fight, I myself would have never thought I’d come here to be begging like this, but now I realize I made a mistake; I need you back in my life, Fiona.”
Fiona laughed, “you need me back? Or you need more money. Which one?”
Hugo sighed, “I do need money, but that’s not why I came here. I am really repentant of my actions, Fiona. I did wrong by hurting you, and I am so sorry. I am willing to make amends if you take me back. I love you, Fiona Marlan.”
“Take him back?” Rin scowled. “Are you just going to let him do that to us?”
“Hugo…”
“Yes, my love?”
“Get out.”
“Fiona. Please, I know you’re mad, but think of all the memories we had together. Think of the future, the life I promised to build for you. Don’t you want all that? Please, reconsider.”
“We had no memories, and we have no future. All the years I have spent with you will continue to be years of regret for me, Hugo. We have barely been apart for two days, and I don’t think I have ever breathed as much fresh air as I did during that short time. I will never forgive you for making life harder for me. I will never forgive you for hurting me, Hugo Kane.”
Just then, the topic changed when Hugo spotted a male figure standing behind her. She didn’t know when Chan had come to stand behind her back.
“What the heck, Fiona? Less than how many days, and you’re already screwing someone else? Just how much of a w***e are you…?”
Hugo didn’t finish the last word before Fiona flung her hand, slapping him hard on the face. He nearly lost balance and fell.
“What the heck? How dare you, you b***h….”
Hugo wanted to attack Fiona in retaliation, but Chan had thought fast. Taking her hand to pull her out of the way so he could stand between her and Hugo, he made Fiona dodge a hit from her ex-lover.
“Stay out of this, you bastard!”
“You would have hit her just now if I didn’t pull her away. Thank your stars that it didn’t happen. Otherwise, I would have given you the beating of your destiny.”
Hugo had a much smaller frame than Chan; he appeared intimidated by the larger man’s stance but decided not to let it show in his expression. He shot out his chest boldly.
“Just who do you think you are to interrupt our conversation?”
“Does hitting and treating women like trash seem like a conversation to you?”
“Fiona! Tell this guy here to stay out of things that do not concern him! I didn’t come here to fight anyone, but if he tries me….”
Chan interrupted him. “I thought I heard her clearly when she told you to get out, meaning she wants nothing to do with you. So save yourself the trouble and stay out of her way. Stay out of mine for your own good too. The mere sight of you annoys me. I would hate to do anything to you simply because of your appearance.”
Hugo appeared astounded, looking between Chan, his face searching for Fiona, who still stood behind the rigid taller man.
“Do you think he is more of a man than me? All I see here is meat and muscles! He will never give you the kind of future you desire.”
Fiona didn’t answer. At that moment, she felt she’d heard enough from Hugo. Next, the two men heard the sound of the door close behind them. Fiona had gone inside.
Hugo barked, “you’ve upset her. Now you see what you’ve done!”
“The only thing that seems to have upset her is your presence. She was fine just a few minutes ago.”
“Why don’t you learn to stay out of things that don’t concern you?”
At that point, Chan was already getting tired of the arguments. It was time to go to sleep.
“I honestly don’t have time to stand here and look at your face any longer. I will be going inside now, but let me warn you; if I ever see or hear that you try to hurt Fiona again, I will make you regret the day your mother brought you to this earth!”
“What the…”
Chan didn’t wait for his response before going inside and slamming the door in his face. He paused for a bit to hear what was going on outside, and when he heard curses, and then footsteps disappearing, it was certain that Hugo had left.
Chan sighed as he walked over to Fiona, who now had her head bent as she sat at the table. She appeared to have been crying.
“Fiona…”
“You didn’t have to do that, you know.”
“Do what?”
“Stand up for me that way.”
“I’m sorry about that; I didn’t want to interfere at first until I saw he was about to hit you. I just could not help myself seeing you get hurt. I don’t think I will ever be able to tolerate it.”
The words touched Fiona so much that she got up and went over to where he stood. Taking his hand, she said, “thank you.”
“You don’t have to thank me,” Chan replied. “I did not do anything.”
“Yes, you did.” She sighed as she leaned closer to him, resting her head on his chest and wrapping her hands around his neck. She felt safe and comforted in this space. Chan didn’t hug her back, but he brought his hand to her backside, gently stroking her hair. Both remained in that position under the shade of the candlelight.
“Fiona?” Chan said to break the silence after a while.
“I want this too, but please, can we take this one step at a time?”
Fiona nodded her head slowly, still leaning on his chest.
“Of course.”

ONE WEEK LATER
“Who goes there?” One of the guards at the large gates questioned the peasant they saw approaching.
The peasant didn’t answer but only came closer. The guards sensed it was an attack, so they drew out their weapons to threaten the peasant who kept approaching. He’d reached where they stood, and with one look at his face, the guards cowered, sheathing their swords.
“Your majesty!” They bowed their heads, allowing him to pass as soon as they recognized who the peasant turned out to be.
All the servants and wolves passing by or carrying out various duties on the grounds immediately stopped their businesses upon seeing who had just walked through the palace gates.
Unbelievable!
Ronan smiled as he made his way to his chambers, ignoring their astonished gazes.
The Alpha king is back.
