Chapter 1: Murdered in cold blood

1374 Words
Aimee’s POV I ran as much as possible, my legs were beginning to give way now. My muscles cramped and hurt as if they were burning. It was already afternoon since I’ve been running this morning. I no longer had the strength to go on. My mind was muddled with thoughts of that horrible incident. I had witnessed the murder of my own sister in cold blood. I cringed at the thought as tears flooded my already swollen eyes. I had been running for my dear life for almost four hours and I still had to run because I knew they were in pursuit of me. “Heartless devils” was the only angry whisper I could barely pass through my chapped dry mouth and throat. I needed water, I needed to rest, I needed food and I needed a shelter. Most importantly, I needed to inform my family that their daughter was no more. I couldn’t imagine what my mom would go through, what my sister’s boys would do without her, gosh what her husband would have to go through all having lost their loved one. All these things I needed were just a wish, I knew there was no way I would get those in the middle of nowhere. I was deep in the bush and it was beginning to scare me out. My thoughts raced back to my nephews, I almost forgot that they were kidnapped. Gosh, I needed to report that to the police but there was one problem, I had no means. ‘Aimee, you are so stupid. Instead of running to the police station, you ran into the bush.’ I face-palmed as I scolded myself. I plumped under an oak tree in the bush and pondered on where to crawl to and hide. I was really tired from all this. My sister who had visited me with her two little boys from another town had just arrived. I hadn’t even given my nephews a hug because we had stopped on our way to my house, when my sister met a friend of hers and was talking to her. After talking to her friend she started giving me advices on how to drive a big car without hurting my back. I had been complaining to her that my back hurt due to driving an SUV. I wanted to exchange it for a smaller car that I could manage. We had let our guard down and we didn't see the goons that suddenly surrounded us while standing outside the car after her friend drove off. She barely even finished her sentence when a group of mafia looking guys came out of nowhere and shot her in cold blood in a public place. One of them grabbed my nephews from their car seats and shoved them into their car. Another fierce looking and fearful creature that used to look like a man, and now I couldn’t tell if it was human, drove off with my nephews inside. “Thump!” I fell down as I saw darkness. I could have sworn that that was the end of me. I thought they shot me too. ‘Who would want a witness, right? Of course they would get rid of me.’ Even though I had hardly seen their faces, I heard their accent. They were not locals even though they stayed in Cramsville . They were the infamous mafia who were terrorizing the city by selling drugs. I suddenly jolted up and sprinted for my dear life. One of them pointed a gun at me aiming to shoot and kill me but the other stopped him. “You only shoot at close range in public, Marco. Otherwise you draw attention to us then we will have more witnesses.” ‘Good advice, and it’s going to buy me some time to escape’ I thought. One of them took the car and drove off as I ran towards an opposite direction where the tarred road was far from the footpath. I deliberately ran that way to avoid them following me with their car. Little did I know some of them decided to follow me on foot. The direction I was running to was taking me into the bush, with few houses scattered on the outskirts of the city. There was no police station in sight, the houses had big and tall walls and iron bar gates so I couldn’t seek for help anywhere without risking the goons catching up on me. I continued going deeper into the bush hoping they would give up on pursuing me. It was common knowledge that the mafia had taken over the city and were selling drugs yet the law enforcers failed to catch them. The cops only managed to nub those who were selling for them. Unfortunately those could not even last a day in jail as some mysterious person would snap their necks before they could snitch on their masters. It looks like they had everybody working for them including small children. There was a case of one of the students at work who was alleged to be working for them unwillingly. This student had totally changed from a meek student to a very cold and ruthless girl. Little did we know that she was silently pleading for help with her sudden change of behavior. She wanted to draw attention so she could tell someone who cared to hear, what she was going through. Her mother had used her to pay for her drug addiction madness. She owed the mafia huge amounts of money but failed to pay. She was old and of no use to them so they decided to use this 15 year old girl. She was beautiful ,tanned skin, long wavy and flowing brunette hair, Hazel eyes and smooth skin. She wasn’t a very brilliant student but she was above average, she had a promising future but these goons destroyed her life. When you saw her it was as if she was living a normal life because she would come to school and skip school now and then just like any other high school student would. The days she would not make it to school were the days she suffered under the hands of these goons. They would force her to deliver some drugs to an unknown place and when she got there they would sexually abuse her, because to them, she was their property. They thought it was easy to use her to deliver drugs because nobody could suspect an underage girl for carrying drugs. She did not like this at all and she became withdrawn and quiet. This caused her marks to plummet. My heart ached for her. The police were trying to work with her to set a trap for the goons without risking her life. The use of drugs had suddenly surged in Cramsville city. The law enforcers would only nub and charge the users of which it was no use since they didn't know who sold the drugs to them. They were not kept in jail for long because the users had little information on who the Lords of the drugs were. The sellers were very smart and most users didn't know them. With theft escalating, the city was upside down and this did not make these goons care a bit. All they cared about was fast money. Most of them owned legitimate businesses such as car dealership, supermarkets and the like where I presume they laundered the dirty money from the drugs leaving no trace. I particularly hated what these mafia were doing to my city as they had turned it into a drug den. What I failed to understand was their connection with my family. What is it that they wanted with my nephews? It beat my comprehension and made my blood boil. I was brought back from my reverie by the sound of a twig breaking. I jumped and looked towards where the sound came from. I quickly hid myself under a nearby thicket as I heard quick footsteps coming towards where I was hiding.
