KATE PREPARED A LIGHT repast, taking her time with insignificant details. She crowded a plate with the two halves of a grilled cheese sandwich and the quarters of an orange she had peeled carefully. Then she went out onto the deck, but first, she had reluctantly made a detour to pick up the phone left on the table in the dining room. Kate ate her sandwich, but she kept looking at her phone sideways. She didn’t want to touch it. On the one hand, she wished that the phone would ring, but on the other, she dreaded it. She had never been so uncertain of something in her entire life, and that annoyed her. She loathed herself for being so hesitant.
