chapter 2: the council

Scarlet’s pov

“what were you thinking? How could you use your magic in front of a human? You know the rules, humans cant know who we are” my mother said.

I just came back home because I have been summoned by the council, no doubt to be questioned for what happened last night.

“I was thinking that I have to save the man I love” I answered, and my mother looked at me and then rolled her eyes.

“you would sacrifice your position in the council for the man you love? Should I remind you the things you went through just to become a member of the council? The people you and I had to leave behind?” she asked me, and I shook my head.

My father didn’t like the idea of me joining the council, when he and my mom divorced he asked me to go with him, but I refused.

I knew that he had something against the council, and he wouldn’t let me join, I love my mother, so I stayed with her.

Because unlike him I knew that she would let me join the council, my father left with my oldest brother Daniel because like our father he wanted nothing to do with the council.

I don’t know what the council did to him, but I know that there was something that made him angry enough to leave everything behind.

The council is a group of supernatural beings, they are the leaders that ensure that rules are followed and that our existence remain a secret from humans.

One thing about humans is that when they don’t understand something they see it as a threat and then try to either control it or destroy it. An example is the m******e that happened in Salem where thousands and thousands of witches were killed.

I come from a long line of powerful witches, my ancestors go way back from Salem and that makes me one of the most powerful witches alive.

Which is why even though I am still just 24 I am in the council, one of the youngest supernatural to ever be in the council.

And besides that, I worked hard, trained twice as hard as any other witch so I couldbe twice as strong, spent my life reading or training.

“well, you are lucky that you are good at your job so I don’t think they will kick you out of the council as punishment” she said, and I sat down.

“Scarlet, I don’t want you to disappoint me like this again you understand?” she asked me, and I nodded.

My mom has an authoritative voice, every time she spoke her voice would force you to sit down and listen.

If she was a werewolf she would have been the Luna type, not to mention her confidence and how she walks with her head held high all the time.

“go and have a shower and a nap or eat if you are hungry, its going to be a long night for you” she said, and I nodded.

I got up and went to my room where I found Jen waiting for me with snacks, I tend to stress eat and she knows it very well.

I sat down with her we started eating all the junk stuff she had on my bed, “what did she say??” Jen my little sister and pillar of strength asked and I shrugged.

“the normal what were you thinking and are you stupid?” I asked mimic my mother, Jen started laughing.

“stop making fun of her because you sound like her too, I look exactly like her, but you behave and sound her” she said, and I rolled my eyes.

She is telling the truth though; Jen and my mother look like twins while me and her behave the exact same way.

I took a shower and then took a nap, usually these meeting take forever because I am probably not the only one who broke the rules this week.

Every single person who broke the rules would stand in front of the council and plead their case, depending on what they have to say the council will then make a decision.

We took the car and went to the place where the council members meet.

“just do whatever they tell you okay” my mother said. “whatever they say? Even if I don’t think its fair?” I asked her and she glared at me.

“I don’t have to remind you how much we have worked to get here, you out of all my kids witnessed the struggles I went through to get into the council. Hell, you witnessed them yourself, now do as they say” she said, and I nodded.

She can be scary when she is like this, we got there, and I smiled when Alpha King Kane Cullen greeted me.

“heard about your case, I hope it goes in your favour” he said, and I smiled, he really is a great man indeed.

I looked behind him and I saw Andrew Brown and his father Damien Brown who is also a council member.

Damien is Alpha King Kane’s beta, and he is currently training his son to take on the role as well, “well look who is in trouble” Andrew said to me.

“don’t be a jerk, I am scared, and you are doing that” I said, and he smiled and hugged me. Andrew and I have been friends ever since I joined the council.

He is not a member of the council, but he is due to take his father’s place soon, so they are training him for when he joins the council.

The council meeting started and everyone who broke the rules were called and given their punishments and when they called my name I stood up.

I walked in front of everyone and kept my head bowed a bit.

“well, I am not happy to see you here child” my uncle Samuel Hale said, and I bowed my head down a little.

“tell us what happened” Drake Black said, he is the vampire King and not easily impressed I am afraid.

I told them about what happened, everything that happened and how they seemed hellbent on feeding on us, “you are dating a human?” he asked me, and I nodded, “it’s not against the rules, we are allowed to date humans” I said, and he nodded.

“who attacked first?” Elena smith also a vampire asked me, “they did, and I didn’t fight back, I warned them to leave but they didn’t listen” I said, and she nodded.

“you killed them, in front of a human and you used your magic and killed them even though we forbid using magic in front of them” my mother said with a rough tone.

I looked at her surprised, “yes, like I said I didn’t have a choice. I warned them but they refused to listen” I said.

“and the human, did he know that super naturals exist before you used your magic?” Alpha King Kane asked me, and I was grateful that he did.

“yes he knew, he wasn’t surprised at all. He knew about the existence of super naturals” I said, and he nodded.

They all knew I was telling the truth because before you go on the stand they give you the truth serum, it does exactly that.

It makes you tell the truth and nothing but the truth, I was also surprised to find out that Derek knew that I was a witch.

But I should have known that he would know, he is one of the most observant and smartest people I know .

“okay then lets gather around and discuss her punishment” my aunt Rita Hale said.

I watched as they discussed my future, “well we got the solution, you will need to cut ties with the human and nothing else.

This is your first offence, so all is forgiven, all you have to do is erase his memories of you and then cut ties with him” my mother said in a monotone.

I looked at them and I couldn’t believe it, “what?? You cant just make me cut ties with him, mother I told you that I love him. He already knew” I said, and she didn’t say anything.

Judging from the serious expression she had on her face she was dead serious, “please don’t make me do this” I said.

When a human already knows about our existence no punishment is given, you cant reveal a secret that the other person already knows.

“the decision has been made child” Samuel Hale said, and I went down on my knees. “please I will do anything, just don’t make me leave him” I said, and they all avoided my gaze.

“the matter is settled child” Alpha King Kane said, “please, I will do anything just don’t make me leave him” I said again.

“there is nothing else you can do Scarlet; the decision has been made and you know what I always tell you. Two can keep a secret if one of them is dead” my mother said.

I felt like my heart was being stabbed a thousand times.it was a clear warning, if I didn’t break up with him they will go as far as killing him to prove a point.

Just the thought of leaving him broke my heart even more, even on the way home I begged and begged my mother to tell the council to reconsider.

“stop that, I have already begged them. I have begged them to let you stay in the council because they were going to kick you out” she said, and I stopped saying anything.

I just cried all the way home, I tried to stop the tears, but they wouldn’t stop no matter how hard I tried.

When we got home I ran to my room, a few seconds later my bedroom door opened, and I didn’t have to check to know who it was.

“mom told me, I am so sorry sister” Jen said as she came closer to me and hugged me, I cried in her arms, and she didn’t seem to mind.

“why me? why do I have to let go of the love of my life? I love him Jen, I love him so much it hurts.

How could I give him up? I don’t want to give him up” I said, and she didn’t say anything but kept hugging me.

“you have to, what else could you do?” she asked me. She was right, there is nothing else I can do, the council is powerful group and they are capable of anything.

I would rather let him go than for him to die, my love isnt that selfish, I cant be selfish, not with him.
