Prolog
A teenage girl was running with a screaming baby in the woods. There was nowhere to go, but something or someone was following her. All she knew was she needed to get the baby to safety. As she was running, she started to sense a wolf pack and began to chant. Smoke engulfed the child, and she quickly kissed the blue and gold-eyed baby on the head. She watched as her baby disappeared from her arms and tears start to fall from her face. "I love you," she whispered into the air and began to run in the opposite direction from the pack. She didn't want anyone to know where she sent the baby. When she was far enough away, she stopped running and turned around. She thought he would send a monster or one of his hunch men to come after her, but she never thought he would come himself. He was running towards her, and as he stopped right in front of her, she knew this was the end. At least her daughter was safe. "Where is she?" He yelled. "You will never find her." "I am the god of magic. You think you can keep her from me?" He laughed. "Ah, but Heka, you forgot something." "And what is that?" He asked as he grabbed her shirt, pulling the young teen towards him. She smiled. "You have never seen her, you have no DNA, and since she is a mortal child, you can not locate her until her magic awakens." Just then, she felt a knife plunged into her stomach, and he dropped her to the ground. "You may have succeeded in keeping my child from me for now, but one day I will have her. As for you, well, you will never see her again." And he disappeared. She just laid there on the ground and thought of her beautiful daughter. She is safe for now. As she began to close her eyes, someone walked towards her from behind a tree. "Hello Kate, my name is Riley, and I am here to help," The woman said. "My baby," Kate said as she looked at the woman with tears streaming down her face. All of a sudden, Kate closed her eyes and didn't wake up. Riley got down on her knees and touched Kate's shoulders. "You will not be there to watch her grow, but one day you will meet again." Riley began to chant and watched as Kate's body was covered in ice and then disappear. The last time this spell was performed was when Riley and her sister froze their mother. Meanwhile, the child was lying on the cold ground in the forest screaming. A young warrior heard the child's screams and decided to see what was going on. The closer he got, the louder the child's cries were, but what got him was he couldn't smell or sense anyone but the child. As he walked around a tree, he saw a blanket on the ground and the child fussing. He looked around, but no one was there. So he quickly went over to the child and picked it up. "Shhh, little one, you are safe now." He looked at the baby in his arms and began to walk towards the pack hospital. The child looked like a newborn baby. Probably only a few hours old. 'Alpha, we have a problem,' The warrior said through the mind link. 'What is going on?' 'I found a newborn baby at the border. I am heading to the hospital.' 'I'm sorry you found what?' 'A newborn baby. I heard it crying, and there is no one there or any scents but the babies.' 'My god. I will meet you at the hospital.' The warrior quickly walked to the pack hospital with the screaming child. As he walked past pack members, they looked at the child in his arms, and he held the baby tight to his chest. He felt protective of the little one. As he walked into the hospital, Alpha Grey and Beta Charles were waiting for him. When they spotted him, they were looking at the baby in his arms. "Where do you want the baby?" The warrior asked the nurse. "Give me the child." The nurse said as she held her hands out. The warrior handed the baby to the nurse, and she took the baby in the back. He kept looking at the spot the baby disappeared to. "What happened?" The alpha asked. "I was patrolling the area, and I heard a baby crying. After several seconds of hearing the child's cries, I decided to see what was going on. The closer I approached the area, I could hear the baby crying but what got me was I didn't smell anything. I found the baby on the ground wrapped up in the blanket. There were no scents, blood, or footprints. The baby was just there." "You did good, Brody. You may return to your post," The alpha said. Brody looked at his alpha and sighed. "Alpha, I hate to ask, but I would like to stay. My wolf and I feel protective over the child, and if no one claims the baby, I would like to. My mate can not have children." The alpha thought about it for a moment and then said, "That is fine. I want you to show the Beta where you found the baby, and then you can come right back." Just as Brody got back from showing the Beta where he found the baby, the doctor walked out. "The baby is a girl, and she is doing fine. Hungry but overall healthy. She isn't even a day old, alpha. Where are her parents?" "Brody found her near our border all alone." The doctor closed her eyes. "One more thing, alpha. She is a human child." "If her parents can not be found, she will have to remain here. We can not have the humans poking around," The alpha said. "She can stay with my mate and me until we find her parents, and if we don't find them, we will keep her." "Sounds good. I will be in touch." The alpha said and walked away. The alpha was happy for Brody and his mate, but he was sad that someone would just throw their precious gift away. The doctor brought Brody to the room the baby girl was in. He picked the little girl up and took her home. His mate Heidi was in the kitchen when he walked into the cabin they shared, and when she heard him walk in, she stopped what she was doing. "Aren't you suppose to be on patrol?" Heidi asked as she walked into the room. Brody was looking at the baby and said, "I found her abandoned in the woods. I asked the alpha if we could keep her if her parents can't be found." He said as he looked at his mate. "What did he say?" She said as she walked closer to Brody so she could see the child. "We can adopt her after the search is over. She needs a name." "I always wanted to name a baby girl Maya." "Maya, it is." Brody handed the baby to his crying mate, and they borrowed clothes and other baby items from friends and family. Several pack members tried to find Maya's parents, but they couldn't find anything. There were no traces of anything, and on the third day, the alpha announced that Brody and Heidi could adopt the infant.
