Carter was sceptical while walking down the stairs. Amelia did wish him best of luck with a soft smile on her face but he was still on edge. What if he was going to find out something he shouldn't? That always made him feel uneasy. Like he was missing something and someone would shove it down his throat.
The witch was in the backyard waiting for him. He was aware that other pack members were also present, excited to hear his future. It was going to be a personal reading however but his mother would eventually announce it to anyone and everyone around.
With a sigh he stepped into the backyard, his eyes narrowing when he noticed the witch sitting on the other side of the table. His mother patted at the empty chair, hushing him to hurry up. The Alpha refrained from rolling his eyes. She acted like it was her who was going to find out about her mate.
"Melissa this is my son, the future Alpha of this pack, Carter" His mother wrapped her arm around his hand, patting on his chest. Carter noticed Zaid trying to hide his smile at the introduction. His friend knew how much that infuriated him.
Melissa, the witch bowed her head down and he did the same. He noticed that she didn't say anything which was unusual. Edward, his brother's pack had a witch which usually said a greeting and began. Maybe it was different everywhere.
Licking her lips, she raised her head, "This is a private reading so I advise you all to be quiet and maintain distance. No one is allowed to overhear or use their wolf. If you do I will know and it won't be good to anyone of you"
Was she threatening openly? Carter gawked at her. There were about twenty pack wolves gathered and she openly threatened. The same wolves who can rip her apart in a matter of seconds. He admired her fierce tone and courage, no-one sane would do that. But it seemed like she knew what she was saying because everyone went slack except for his parents.
"My Lord," Melissa turned to General, the Pack Alpha and bowed her head down.
"I apologize for asking you this but you and the Luna need to leave. Nothing I say would stop your paternal instincts from listening and it could be dangerous."
The Luna made a face, "But why? We have been there for his previous readings."
The witch hummed softly, "My Luna this one is going to be very critical and crucial for your son so no one but he needs to hear it"
Carter peeked over his shoulder at his mother who was huffing and puffing under her breath. He should have expected that because she was so excited to know about everything. His father, however, looked emotionless. Typical.
"Mother"
She threw her hands in the air, "Fine I'm leaving"
His father walked out along with her and he let out a breath he was holding. They truly were something. With them gone he can finally ask the questions he has been itching for.
"I know you have questions I can see the look on your face but trust me you'll get answers after I'm done with your reading"
Carter dumfounded nodded his head. He sat back as the witch used some vials and some herbs. It was interesting to watch the entire process as she burned the sage around them. He coughed twice in the beginning but got used to the smell. In her words, she was 'cleansing their aura'.
"I want you to drink this" She handed him the glass vial with pink liquid. He blinked at it questioningly. Carter thought that they usually do the reading by seeing his palm or by the cards. What was she upto?
"You can sniff it if you are doubtful. There is no poison in this. The herbs in this will drive you in a trance-like state for atleast two hours where I can get answers from you"
He twisted his lips, "You can ask me questions without having to drug me"
Melissa snorted, her lips twitching, "I can’t.Humans are liars. It's the tendency in them to protect themselves from harsh reality. They lie unknowingly sometimes just to preserve their mind from going into dark places. Your wolf, however, will never deceive. There are some memories, some events only your wolf can remember because the human you have suppressed it, whether knowingly or unknowingly. To know your future I have to question the real you."
"Wow" Carter breathed. He had no idea the process was this complicated. The Alpha did not remember going through this entire process when he was young.
"This is like science."
"Witches do rely on science most of the times," Melissa mused.
He accepted the vial. His beta, his protector, Zaid was in the corner so nothing would happen to him. With that thought in his mind, he gulped the entire liquid in one go.
"Is that it?" He slurred, staring at the witch. His vision was getting blurry the longer he stared.
"Yes, young Alpha. Now I want you to lean forward and rest your head. Just relax and I'll handle the rest of it"
His head was getting heavy as he blinked his eyes. With a nod, he leaned forward and slumped his head on the table. The cold table made him flinch but he closed his eyes and slipped into the abyss of darkness.
He could hear voices around him, a hand thrust towards him. Carter hazily stared at the hand. For some reason, he was unable to move his arms. It was dark everywhere and the hand was forwarded towards him was shining. He wanted to move towards the light.
"Take it, young Alpha"
He strained, his face red, "I-I can't..."
The voice got closer, the hand got closer, "Yes you can. I believe in you. Just a little push"
He nodded his head, trying to move his arms but failing. Carter huffed, tears of frustration escaping his eyes. A scream tore out of his lips.
"What is happening to me?!" He glared at the hand.
"You are overwhelmed with your memories and trapped inside them. I'll pull you out. Just give me your hand"
Carter sighed, the sweat dripping off his forehead as he lifted his hand. With a force, he pushed it towards the light and held on to the hand. The fingers tightened around his hand and he was pulled out of the darkness.
The Alpha blinked his eyes, looking around. He was still in the backyard. What happened to him? Did he dream the entire thing?
He whipped his head towards Melissa, a frown on his face, "What was that? What happened to me?"
Melissa wiped her hands with the tissue and threw them in the vessel. He gasped as the fire caught the tissues and burned them.
"You remembered"
"Huh?" He blinked his eyes. What was she talking about? He drank the liquid and was stuck in dark somewhere. That's all he can remember.
"Your memories. The wolf inside you remembers everything which is why you were pushed into darkness" Melissa licked her lips.
A shiver went through his body. It felt like his nightmare. He did forget something but what was it? Why can't he remember?
"Did you question me while I was knocked out?"
Melissa shook her head, "There was no need. You told me everything"
He gulped at the look on her face. If he told her everything why can't he remember? Carter tried not to tug at his hair. Something was going on with him. Something terribly wrong.
"What did I tell you?"
"You told me that you found your mate but left her behind. You also said that you can't remember her but you need to or else she will die"
Carter parted his lips in shock. When did he say those words?
"I c-cant"
Melissa touched the back of his arm and he jerked at her touch, recoiling his hand.
"It's okay. The reason you don't remember is that your human form was out cold. Whatever I know was said by your wolf, not your human form. That's why you are having a hard time remembering it"
"But I want to remember it. Please...just please can you help me?" He stared at her, his voice barely audible. The entire ordeal shook him to the core. Finding out that he was indeed forgetting something and unable to remember was his biggest nightmare come to life. He had to find a way to fight it.
Melissa stood up, gathering her things, "I can't. If you take help from someone like me, someone supernatural you'll lose all your memories. Forever"
Carters eyes widened at that. He thought she would be the key to his questions. That he would finally be free after getting to talk to her.
He rubbed his face, breathing in his palms, "Then what do I do?"
"Remember..."
