Chapter 8: Low Profile

1400 Words
Vel’s POV I had no class right after that since it was just the first day of school and our professor for the next subject weren’t around. I looked for the brute and see what he was going to do that afternoon. He isn’t really that hard to find when he’s inside the campus. Wherever the girls’ commotion is, that’s where he surely is. I saw him at the gym and I was glad that there were a lot of students there too. He was on the court along with other guys and it looked like they have a basketball game. So this is what they meant by play earlier. The gym was almost full with girls holding tarpaulins with the player’s faces and I can’t help but admire how they put on so many efforts for them. I sighed. I guess I can go home now. I don’t think his parents forbid him from playing basketball. It is even a good thing that he gets himself engaged in sports and not do something illegal or violent. “Are the engineering and architecture players here already?” I heard a girl beside me. “Not yet,” I heard another one. “I can’t wait to see Max play,” Another one said. Wait, Max? Max will play here today? Should I at least watch their game? I shook my head. I should just go home and rest. I turned my back to go out of the gym but I saw a few other guys in their jerseys and saw Max waving at me. He ran towards me and I didn’t know what I would do. The girls who were beside me earlier already found their seats and I was alone near the entrance as everyone were on the bench although there were some people who just entered the gym. “Hi, Yzavella,” He said when he was near me. “Hi, Max,” I said and smiled. “Are you here to watch the game?” He said. “N-no,” I said. “I m-mean, I was just looking for something and I saw people here; I didn’t know there was a game.” “You really are a freshman,” He said and laughed. “Should I be insulted?” I said and laughed with him too. He shook his head. “This is an annual tradition. Every first day of class, the different colleges would play basketball against each other, just for fun. It’s going to be fun.” He said. “Oh, really? I didn’t know that,” I said. “I see,” He said. “Were you just about to leave a while ago before I saw you?” “Y-Yeah, I was just about to go home,” I said. “Why? Don’t you want to watch and enjoy our game? I am telling you, you shouldn’t miss this.” He said. “B-But… I-I am not really a fan of basket—“ I said but he cut me off. “What are you going to do at home anyway? Come on; it’s just the first day of school. Don’t tell me you’re going to study already?” He said. “Can you please stay? Can you do this for me?” I didn’t know what to say. I know I owe him but I am not really a fan of events like this. I wanted to say no but I knew I couldn’t so I nodded. I also didn’t like the attention that we were getting from the crowd. “Great!” He said. “Thank you,” “You’re welcome; you should win because you made me stay,” I joked. “Oh, we will,” He said and laughed. “You are going to be our lucky charm.” I laughed and just shook my head. “I’ll just go upstairs and look for a seat. “Oh, no, no,” He said. “You can sit behind our bench players.” He pointed his co-players. “No, I can’t do that,” I said. “I’ll just look upstairs; there are still a lot of vacant spaces.” “No, please, I insists,” He said. “No one’s going to sit there anyway aside from our cheerers. We have a lot of room for you,” I sighed. “Are you sure? Don’t you think your fans won’t like that?” “Nah, that’s perfectly fine,” He said. I nodded and let him take me to where his teammates were and made me sit at the back of their huddle. He then jogged towards the other side of the court along with the first five players of their team. He smiled when he was there and I smiled too. He’s so thoughtful. I saw the girls around me, the cheerers, throwing dirty looks at me and I can’t help but feel intimidated. They might think that Max and I are something just like what that Sanders was thinking. Speaking of him, where is he? I saw him earlier. I looked around to find him and yes he was on the other side. It is actually a good thing too that I am here so I would know whether or not he plays well. I took out my phone and messaged Mrs. Sanders. To: Sanders ‘He is playing basketball right now; nothing interesting or unusual going on’ I put my phone back on my bag and focused on the upcoming game. I saw Dale looking at me from the other side of the court. What now? He turned around and then dunked the ball. Well, he’s good but until I see how he plays with an opponent, I cannot really tell. “Excuse me,” A girl beside me said. I thought that she wanted to pass by but she stood in front of me so I looked up to her. “Yes?” I said in my most friendly manner. “Who are you and why are you here sitting with us?” She said. I couldn’t find the right words to say as she was too intimidating for me. She was wearing a skirt the same with the ones in front of me and I can’t help but think that she might be the cheerleader. “I-I am—“ I said but I was cut off by a voice behind us. “Is there something wrong here?” Max said. “Max!” The girl said delightfully. “Tiff,” Max said. “What’s going on?” “Oh, I was just asking this loser who she is and why she’s sitting here with us.” She said and turned to me. Wow, did she really just say that? I stood up and took my bag. “I-I’m sorry; I will leave now,” “Grea—“ Tiffany said but she was cut off by Max. “No!” Max said sternly. “She will not leave.” “Max, what are you saying? We can’t have losers here on our side. I mean, look at her. She’s so generic looking.” She said. Generic, really? What the hell! “She’s my guest and she’s staying,” Max said. “And don’t you dare talk to her that way or talk about her like that,” “W-What?” Tiffany said with her mouth wide open. “You heard me, I am warning you,” Max said and went up to me. “You can stay here. I’m so sorry about that.” “I can just leave,” I said. “You said you’ll watch my game,” He said. “Or I can just stay at the benches upstairs,” I suggested. “No, I won’t let you do that,” He said. “But—“ I said but was cut off. “Max!” A teammate called him and said that they need to get ready as the game will start any minute now. “I’ll talk to you later,” He said and smiled. He then turned to Tiffany and gave her a warning look. Oh, I think I am going to be in some kind of trouble. I am not liking this at all; so much for keeping a low profile on this campus.
