Chapter 6 I'm Serious

1502 Words
Jason was wearing an oxygen mask, with several tubes inserted in his body. His eyes were closed, his face pale, and his breath feeble. Agnes felt a lump in her throat and knelt down at the bedside. She couldn’t stop her tears, thinking of Jason's love and tolerance of her in the previous life. Upon finding she was pregnant with twins, Jason made a will to split his property equally between her two babies, including his shares in Jenkins Group. After she had a miscarriage due to a car accident, Jason couldn't take the blow. He had a sudden cerebral hemorrhage, and was unconscious on the spot. He didn't make it. Agnes fell into a trance. She subconsciously put her hands over her stomach. There were once in there four little babies, but none of them lived. When Ryan and Brenda came back from the doctor's office, they saw Agnes kneeling on the ground, her face covered in tears and her body shaking all over. Ryan hurriedly helped her up and comforted her in a low voice: "The doctor said that he was out of danger now. Everything will be okay" Although Brenda was still angry with Agnes, seeing her repent and kneel down twice she couldn’t help softening towards her. "You are still recovering. Go back and have some rest." Agnes took a deep breath, and looked steadily into Brenda's eyes. Her voice was sincere and solemn. "Mrs Jenkins, I’ve done many wrongs. I let you and Mr Jenkins down. Please believe me, I'll never disappoint you again.” Brenda had always treated Agnes as if she was her own. Seeing Agnes kneeling and begging for forgiveness, her head still bandaged and her face covered in tears, Brenda couldn’t help softening towards her. "Agnes, Ryan loves you. Jason and I have always treated you as our own." "I have nothing to ask from you, except that you and Ryan love each other. Only then can our mind be put at ease." Brenda held Agnes’ hands, and shed some tears while talking. "Both Jason and I are nearly 70 years old now. We've been through ups and downs in our life. Now that we're old, there’s nothing we want more than your happiness and the company of grandchildren." The word "grandchildren" made Agnes tremble with grief and hatred. Both her mother and her four babies died at the hands of Flora and Malcom in her previous life. She would never let them get away with this! She would make them pay! Ryan saw Agnes bite her lips, and thought she was embarrassed by this topic. He pulled her behind him. "Mom, Agnes’s still a child herself. It’s too early to talk about marriage and babies." Brenda put on her solemn face, and said crossly: "Agnes is young, but you are not! You are already thirty years old. If you don't get married now, I would literally die of anxiety." Ryan’s lips twitched and said nothing in reply. He took Agnes by her hand, and turned to leave. Brenda said in a low voice: "I haven't finished yet!" After they went out, Agnes shot a meaningful glance at Ryan. "What are you looking at?" "I'm still young, but you're not. Ryan, Miranda thinks you're too old. " Ryan's face fell. He looked at Agnes coldly, and asked with a sneer: "Who is not too old for you then? Is it Malcom? " Agnes was struck dumb. She hurriedly took Ryan's hand, and began to appease him. "It's better to marry a man than to marry a boy. A man is old enough to know how to love, while a boy is too young to take care of himself. Why would I love a boy? " Ryan gave her a cold look, and left without saying a word after accompanying her to her ward. "Ryan!" Ryan halted without looking back, and said coldly: "What's the matter?" "I mean it." A tremble went through his tall frame. He turned back slowly, and gazed her with his deep eyes. His eyes were sharp, and didn’t give her any room to be evasive. "Once you give your promise, I won’t allow you to break it. Think about it carefully." Agnes nodded gently, fighting against dizziness. Ryan gazed at her steadily. He turned around and left the ward without a word. But his steps were much lighter, and the corner of the mouth was lifted a little. Agnes pouted and snorted grumpily. "Do you have to be so cold? As if you would die if you said anything sweet! " In her previous life, she turned down Ryan's coldness, and fell for Malcom’s sugar-coated promises. Thinking of Malcom, Agnes couldn’t help feeling curious about how he was right now. In her previous life, she threatened Ryan with her life, and Ryan had to let Malcom go. In this life, she didn’t do anything for him, and she wondered how he was now. Speak of the devil! The door was gently pushed open, and Malcom crept in. "Agnes!" Agnes was still in a trance, and was scared by his sudden appearance. She frowned at him, and scolded him crossly. "What are you doing here?" Malcom was stunned by her coldness. He looked at her, open-mouthed. She had declared her love for him the day before yesterday, and now she seemed so indifferent. "Agnes, what's the matter with you?" Agnes rolled eyes and pointed at the thick bandage on her head: "Are you blind?" Malcom was struck dumb and stared at Agnes, trying to see what went wrong with her. After a while, Malcom swallowed, rubbed his hands and began to falter. "Agnes, I need your help!" Agnes raised her eyebrows, and sneered: "Help you? How? " "You can go to Miranda and Ryan, and put in a word for me." "Huh! You are asking me, who’ve done them wrong, to ask for forgiveness on your behalf? " Agnes sneered: "I’m not even sure whether they will forgive me or not. Why don’t you, grandson of Jason, put in a few words for me?" Malcom made a few steps closer, and had the face to insist. "Agnes, you know my father is Jason’s illegitimate son. Miranda hates my father. And she hates me. She’ll kill me now that she has the chance. " Malcom trembled in a moment of horror. "Miranda has always doted on you, and Ryan loves you more than everything. They won't be hard on you. Agnes, help me, or I’ll be done for! " Agnes fiddled with her fingers carelessly. "You are right about one thing. Why would I prefer a loser who didn’t dare to visit me after my near death, to the devoted Ryan?" Malcom’s face turned red, half from anger and half from embarrassment. "Agnes, I... I've been worried about you all the time, but... but Miranda...you know how she is, and I..." Agnes interrupted him coldly: "I know. You acted against your will. You had to. There was nothing you could do." Malcom pleaded with Agnes as if he didn't catch the sarcasm in her words. "Agnes, I’m glad you understand. You don't want to see me driven out of my family, do you? Agnes, help me, please.” Agnes lifted her eyes to gaze at the ceiling. After half a minute's silence, she sighed with resignation. "Will it work, if I ask for their forgiveness on your behalf?" Malcom was overjoyed, and said quickly: "It will work! It will! Ryan has always listened to everything you say. He will grant me forgiveness if you just ask." "What if he doesn't?" Malcom paused for a moment, narrowed his eyes and said coldly: "If he doesn't, you can threaten him by hurting yourself. As long as he doesn't want to see you hurt, he will agree." Agnes felt a cold chill in the heart. Although she already knew Malcom was not a good person, she couldn’t help feeling upset at these words. This was the man she loved with all her heart in her previous life. Huh! "Agnes, I’m counting on you. You must help me!" Malcom grabbed her hand and pleaded with her. Agnes felt his hand was like a viper, ready to bite. She pulled back her hand quickly and glared at him. "Get out!" Malcom was a little stunned by this sudden action. He looked around stealthily, and nodded with a big smile. "I’ll leave right now. Don't worry. Ryan is out, and he won't find out about this. Agnes, remember to help me!” Malcom left in a hurry, as if he was running for his life. Agnes opened her palm, exposing the wounds she had left there with her fingernails. If she didn’t help Malcom, he would definitely be driven out by Brenda. Although he was Jason’s grandson, Malcom didn’t enjoy many privileges in the Jenkins family. Leaving the Jenkins family would mean for him a lower standard of living. She wouldn’t let him get away so easily!
