Venus
I woke up this morning with Micah was gone already. The mattress felt cold. Maybe he was gone way before I woke up. I directed my eyes to the nightstand and saw a card there. I raised my body and reached for it.
Good morning, my dear Venus.
I’m sorry I couldn’t be by your side when you opened your beautiful eyes. I have to take care of some business. I hope with this note you won’t get panic when I’m not there.
I’ll be back at lunch and I’m hoping we can have one together at the mansion.
I’m going out with Tyler and Asher will accompany you until I get back home.
Please, don’t cheat on me, baby.
Yours, Micah XO
I smiled reading his quiet long note. What was the XO sign? But anyway, at least I knew Micah was out for his job. I put down the note back at the nightstand and descended the bed. Heading to the bathroom. Although there was a bath, I needed some shower as well. And more private.
Once I was done, I went inside my clothes after I wrapped myself in a white bathrobe. Looking around the massive closet to find some clothes to wear. There were lots of dresses here. Maybe I used them before for some parties. I grabbed the blue shoulder-cut blouse with dark jeans.
I walked out of the bedroom and found Asher was standing outside by leaning his back on the wall. He was looking at his phone and then he raised his eyes on me. “Morning, baby girl.” He pushed himself from the walk and walked closer to me after he tucked his phone into his pocket.
“Morning, Asher.”
He stopped in front of me. “Have you read the note from Micah?”
“I have.”
“Well then, I hope you won’t mind having me around instead of Micah.”
I shook my head. “I won’t. And maybe I can get to know you better again.”
“I assure you, girl. We’re good friends before. It saddened me because you don’t remember our friendship but I’m more relieved knowing that you’re finally opened your eyes. That’s the most important.” I could only smile at his kind words. These people here, Micah, Tyler, and Asher, they were all good guys.
I followed Asher’s lead to the dining room where the breakfast was served already. Asher walked first and pulled out a chair for me. I sat there with him sitting opposite of me. I looked down at the plate and found two pieces of pancake with maple syrup on top served with a cup of tea.
“Dig in,” he says where Asher began eating his pancake. I started to eat as well and when I pushed the cut into my mouth, it tasted so good. So fluffy and the pancake was like melting in my mouth.
“Who cooked this?”
“Tyler,” he replied while pushing another cut into his mouth. It shocked me when he said that. Tyler? That big and scary man?
“Is he the cook here?”
“Yes,” he replied and laughed a bit. “Tyler might look fierce and scary but he’s a good cook. He’s like the mother of the house. He’s good doing some housewife’s chores.”
“Really? But, how about the maids? Or something?”
“There is no one like that, Venus. Micah doesn’t like hiring them here. And since Tyler could do most of the house chores, he doesn’t see any reason to hire some maids or cooks. And you used to clean the house but that earned yourself some lecture from the Lord himself.”
“Why?”
Asher looked at me and then put down his knife and fork. “You are his fiancé, Venus. To him, his fiancé doesn’t need to do any chores.”
“But, isn’t that the duty of a wife?”
“I agree. But this Micah we’re talking about. He’s different from other husbands out there. To him, his will-be-wife should be treated like a Queen. Someone to be served not serving others, including her husband. Besides,” he paused and grabbed his knife and forks again. “The Queen never bows to her King. It’s the other way around, like a game of chess.” Asher began eating again.
I thought I could see that.
Ever since I woke up yesterday, Micah always made sure I was treated properly. He even told me that he didn’t like me working. Maybe because he thought by working, that meant I was going to served someone else.
Micah had his own business. He hired people. His staff bowed to him.
“How long have you been working with Micah?”
“Too long. We knew each other since childhood so we’re practically brothers. The same goes for Tyler.” Wow. I was sure they were so close to the point of considering each other as brothers. Micah said they were working as his and my bodyguards but their exchange conversation that I witnessed yesterday made them looked like best friends. Like Asher said, brothers.
“What should I do while waiting for Micah?”
“Spend your time until he gets back. You used to read books a lot. Maybe you can spend your time in the library.”
I gasped silently. “Micah has a library?” He gave me a nod.
“I’ll take you there after breakfast.” I smiled and we continued eating our dishes.
After we were done, Asher was going to take my plates but I stopped him. We were looking at each other until I said, “You said that I should be treated more than you are. Like a Queen, but I wanted to do everything on my own. You don’t need to tell Micah what I did.” Asher continued to look at me until he smiled and led me to the kitchen.
I went there and found a massive kitchen. Shiny black marble floor, lots of cabinets, utensils were hanging on the wall tidily, tall refrigerator, and a chandelier in the middle of the room. Wow. I was amazed and it scared me to touch them. “Oh, by the way. Don’t break even dirty anything since Ty is a clean-freak. He won’t let anyone make a mess of his kitchen,” Asher advised.
I didn’t want to imagine a stoic man like Tyler got mad. I better not poked out the best. “Thank you for the reminder.” I went to the sink and washed my plate and Asher’s. He was waiting for me by leaning his back on the fridge. After I was done, Asher led me to the library.
It was located on the second floor near Micah’s office. “Oh, if you’re scared to bother Micah while he’s here working, you can spend your time reading some books.”
“Is that what I did before?”
“Yep. Well, Micah was never bothered if you’re around him but it’s you who always felt bad if you’re going to disturb him. On the contrary, it’s your man who hated it having you out of his sight.” My lips formed a smile. My man.
We stopped in front of two wooden doors and Asher opened it, allowing me to enter. I stepped in and was amazed again by the interior. The room was very long and there were lots of bookshelves and everything was filled with books. There were so many couches and sofa chairs. The floor was covered with carpet which I thought must be expensive as well.
“Do you like it?” Asher asked.
“Oh, my God. I love it.”
“Micah would love to hear that. Too bad the man is out of her reach now.” I laughed and turned back to him who’s still standing near the door. Finding him still smiling and here I thought his smile was beautiful. “Your laugh is always beautiful.” My smile dropped. “No wonder Micah fell for you.”
No wonder Micah fell for you.
“Um, I guess you must know our journey.” Asher was looking at me, hinting his answer; yes.
“I like watching you two together like you’re born for each other. I envy you two, actually.” I didn’t know why but when he said that, his tone hinted a bit of sadness. Was he in love with a girl?
“You’ll find one soon.”
He scoffed. “You don’t need to take my words seriously, baby girl. I love being like this. Being single and could mingle everywhere I want. Once I’m committed with one woman, I can’t do anything freely anymore.”
“That’s not what you want now?”
“Maybe not now.”
“Really? How old are you, Asher?”
“Twenty-six. I’m two years younger than Micah. Tyler is the oldest, he’s thirty. He’s single too.”
“I didn’t ask.”
“But you are curious,” he countered where I held back a smile. But when Asher laughed, I followed as well.
Maybe he was right.
We were close before and maybe we could be close again this time. I liked him. Asher was nice and kind. Funny too. He was like the definition of a brother I could count one.
“Well, the library is yours now.”
“You’re not going to keep me company here?”
“I have to politely refuse that offer.”
“Why?”
“Being here always gives me a headache. I hate books.”
“What do you enjoy then?”
“Women,” he playfully answered. I could tell my face now showed the disgust and Asher laughed. “I’m joking, baby girl. I like playing games.”
“Well, you can play it here.” The moment I said that Asher slowly walked towards me. He stopped in front.
“Are you inviting me, Venus?”
“What do you mean?”
He looked confused. I was more confused. “Oh, f**k. I won’t poison your mind now,” he said and backed away from me. “I have to some phone call and once I’m done, I’ll be back.”
“Okay.” Asher walked away and out of the library. Leaving me exploring the inside, looking for the book I wanted to read while waiting for Asher to return, as well as Micah.
